  1. I've been voting for just one cover per round so far. But I voted for three today. Polar Bear Clubber because in addition to the word-play, what I really liked about this back page is that the picture matches the copy perfectly. Look at Alonso's pose. It looks like he really did just club a polar bear. Bear Necessity because I've been ogling that picture all season long. It's a great shot and I even used that pic on an as yet unreleased Pete Alonso Batman card. And They Came and Got Us is the best headline, word-wise, I thought. And as a real-life BVW quote, it reflects both honesty and humility -- good traits, no? -- that we could sure use during this furshlugginer embarrassment of a presidency.
  2. That Newsday Yada Yada rocks. Some people want vote for a negative cover even if Michaelangelo composed it and Shakespeare wrote the copy. They'd vote for the ugliest cover because its the only UPBEAT one in the bunch. Oh my God. Negative press. Help. Where's my garlic and my cross? Avert your eyes.

Maybe not in my lifetime, but I'm sure somebody somewhere is working on it today. The way that'll happen is that one day an advanced race of extraterrestrials will reveal themselves and it'll turn out that all along, they've had the whole planet Earth monitored with their advanced film and recording equipment. They've been recording all of humanity for the last coupl'a hundred thousand years. We'll be able to see live footage of actual dinosaurs in the wild and Nicole Simpson getting killed. And we'll get to see who put the big black dildo in Kevin Plawecki's locker.
  4. It wasnt just a shutdown thing. Several visiting teams got the fast food treatment, including some college teams. And even the shutdown wasnt a legit excuse for fast food. The WH could've ordered out from anywhere.
  5. I didn't pay any attention to this story. This President, I just revile. So were the Nats served the now traditional fast food slop? Holy vomit inducing crapola -- fast food fries purchased hours ago when everybody knows you gotta eat fast food fries within 10 minutes of buying them. I think Trump serves them Whoppers and Big Macs because he's a sociopath and likely looks at pretty much all of these athletes (except Tom Brady and some of the golfers) with extreme scorn and contempt -- and so he gets off on these athletes scrounging down this crappy food which there's a place for in our society, but certainly not at a once in a lifetime visit to the White House. Trump probably views these athletes wolfing down the fast food chow like starved dogs who haven't eaten in a day and a half. That's my take.
  6. Keith's problem - HOF-wise, is that he was way way way ahead of his time. Watching Keith play first base must've been like catching a Jimi Hendrix show in mod London, '66, before Jimi put out any recordings. It was the future, dropped onto your lap. Except Keith was even more ahead of his time than Jimi. If Keith had never existed and then came on the scene today as a young first baseman, he'd still be ahead of his time. Keith was so ahead of his time that the best stats probably don't even come close to measuring what Keith did defensively and even when they're invented, they won't be able to be applied retroactively because so many defensive stats can't simply be counted the way you can add up a player's home runs. They have to be observed.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: The weird part is that Keith himself tends to consider Garvey to be the better candidate. This is, of course, nuts. I love Keith but I've always questioned his analytic skills.
  8. =LWFS post_id=25997 time=1572936417 user_id=84] Any ballot including Garvey over Keith is a spray-tanned joke.
  9. =Ceetar post_id=25927 time=1572885284 user_id=102] And Carlos Beltran is probably better than all those sham 'top' managers. Fuck Girardi, useless bastard.
  10. It's too bad they were too fucking cheap to get JT Realmuto. But whaddya expect? They won't even splurge for a manager and managers today, the top managers, could be had at bargain basement prices.
  11. MLB will announce its 2019 Cy Young award winners in about a week and a half. Tomorrow, in reality show style, MLB will announce each league's top three finalists for the award. https://www.mlb.com/news/cy-young-prediction-tool-reveals-2019-front-runnershttps://www.mlb.com/news/cy-young-prediction-tool-reveals-2019-front-runners Most writers have Jacob deGrom winning the 2019 award. So does Tom Tango's Cy Young predictor. https://www.baseballmusings.com/cgi-bin/CyYoungTracker.pyhttps://www.baseballmusings.com/cgi-bin/CyYoungTracker.py deGrom, however, doesn't even crack the NL's top 10 pitchers according to ESPN's Cy Young Predictor http://www.espn.com/mlb/features/cyyounghttp://www.espn.com/mlb/features/cyyoung The only possible explanation for deGrom's omission there is that the ESPN tool must be heavily weighted towards a pitcher's W-L record. deGrom, who is poised to win the award for a second straight season has a combined 21-17 W-L record over the last two years.
  12. Gil Hodges wasn't on the chopping block. Although, admittedly, a fatal heart attack is no great shakes either and is probably less preferable than getting the ax. I wonder how much patience the Mets would've had with Casey had he not fractured his hip and kept on going?
  13. =LWFS post_id=25801 time=1572661382 user_id=84] This TOTALLY won't end well....

This team wouldn't hire Earl Weaver even if Weaver was willing to work for free. (And please, no "but he's dead" jokes.) So let me sum up my feelings on this managerial hire - it might turn out to be the greatest managerial hire in Mets history even though that's a pretty nebulous thing to say because you could say that about any new manager. But based upon what I know, (and maybe I don't know much) it's a fucking disaster in the making. Of course, with the Wilpons running things, you could say that any managerial hire is doomed to be a fucking disaster. This is so much like the BVW hire. I guess we're really into the Jeff Wilpon era, with eff daddy taking an ever-diminishing role due to age.

  17. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Well if the ship won't sail without Terry, why did they fire him in the first place? Alderson fired Terry; the Mets fired Alderson. And the club has been erasing his legacy at every turn ever since. First they hamstrung him by hiring all "new" senior advisors to tell Fred what he wanted to hear (Omar); then they starved him for resources; then they found an excuse to let him go (cancer, plus the rotten performance of the only guys he could afford to sign like Bruce and Walker) then they give away practically every decent prospect he acquired for a releif pitcher and a guy they think is going to sell more tickets. So if Terry is Sandy's guy and everything Sandy must be purged, so then why is Terry even back?
  18. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=25752 time=1572639745 user_id=68] Well if the ship won't sail without Terry, why did they fire him in the first place? It's not like Callaway was better. And so then why don't they just re-hire Terry? The players love him. So there's at least that. I could live with Terry. It's not like the Mets hadn't hired a dynamic manager in more than 20 years. Oh wait ... they haven't.

  20. Mets managers who also played for the Mets: [FIMG=256]http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/dallas.jpg[/FIMG] ??????
  21. "Making the Splash" is romping away with the lead? Really? I guess an "uplifting" cover about Alonso or deGrom or David Wright is gonna get all youse votes even if it's the ugliest cover that ever was. Just put any of those guys on the cover and say something corny right out of a Mary Poppins song and that'll win.
  22. So everyone here probably already knows this by now but still -- this WS marked the first time the road team won every single game of a series that went seven games. Any seven game series. WS. Playoffs. Whatever. This never happened before in MLB. Or in the NBA. Or in the NHL.
  23. This guy, Yordan -- this is what a 44's supposed to look like.
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: What's unknown, even now that [Fred W] is supposedly a bit more removed from day-to-day operations, is how much his vote counts. I mean ultimately it counts for everything but will he go totally against the recommendation(s) if one guy, maybe not one favored from the prior rounds, "lights up the room" for him? Or, for that matter, we don't know how the power sharing worked up until now; how much of a gap in opinion will it take for Jeff to override BVW and the braintrust? Sometimes I think that the way the Mets operate is that all of this preliminary stuff is mostly a dog and pony show that means shit and the decision is totally the Wilpons. This preliminary stuff is just to trick the GM into thinking that he's calling most of the shots.
  25. The most annoying thing about watching a World Series - any World Series: Do the announcers ever talk about players' season stats? Or at least show them? Because obviously, whatever a player did in his last three games is much more meaningful than what he did over the first 162 games.
