Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I really love the Puppet, Pauper, Pirate, Poet, Pawn, King set and want to collect them all I dunno what to say. Those were on sale at a store near you last year. Where were you? Plus, I don't wanna hijack this thread like the I Give Up thread which wasn't really a hijack anyways, but still, I'm positive there's one poster here that's gonna go all what's Gary Carter's ass doing on third base on me if I keep this up. Pick a 2018 Met. Any 2018 Met.

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: The Diaz Game was probably the most important single event of the year, tightly tied to the narrative of the entire season. Well-packaged tabloid coverage shouldn't lose to less significant events just because one is "positive" the other "negative." That's a topic for the the "Most Positive Event" Derby. This is a contest ultimately judging how stories were told and sold in words and pictures. The gravity of the event described--if it's conveyed well-- ought to matter. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I agree. That's why I gave a vote to NATIONAL DISGRACE. I've been the biggest critic of those who will only vote for a "positive" or "upbeat" cover without even considering the opposites, or "negatives". It's maddening to me and a concept or an outlook that I can't even begin to comprehend . Especially when one of those voters I'm referring to is, or was, a professional journalist. It's a terrible bias and reflects a narrow or closed mindedness. And normally, I'd complain even more. But I don't even though I want to because, to play Devil's Advocate, the contest asks us to vote for our favorites. The contest doesn't ask us to give more weight to the covers with the most gravitas, or the covers that tell the story of the season the best or the covers that are the best microcosms of the whole season. Favorites. It is what it is.

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Wheels is going to get dirty stinking rich this winter. I'd really like him back Incredible, but true. What's even more incredible is that Wheeler wasn't even one of the NL's top 20 pitchers this past season. Must be a dearth of FA pitchers. Jon Matlack is rolling over in his grave even though he's still alive. Even more incredible: he actually WAS one of the Major Leagues' top 20 pitchers by ERA+, FIP, and fWAR (and top-20 in the NL by bWAR both years). By most measures, actually. Over the last two years, actually? He's pushing for https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2019&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=&rost=&age=&filter=&players=&startdate=&enddate=top 10. He's second to deGrom in the majors in suppressing HR rate over that time. Zack Wheeler is, like, good. He's just been playing for a team that minimizes how good he looks to people who don't know what to look for. Lazy me. Here's what I did. I linked to BBRef's 2019 NL pitching leaders page (https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2019-pitching-leaders.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2019-pitching-leaders.shtml) and expanded all the leaderboards, giving me a top 10 list of all the pitching categories. Then I pulled up Wheeler's 2019 stats on a separate tab and skimmed a couple of the key top 10 categories -- (ERA+, WHIP and WAR) Wheeler didn't make the top 10 in any of those, and eyeballing his season stats, I "figgered" that he wouldn't crack the top 20 either. Jeez, his 2019 ERA+ is 102. It's lazy because creating that Fangraphs list that you referenced is easier and way more accurate. I still stand on Jon Matlack rolling over in his grave, though. How much money would Matlack's third full season be worth today on the open FA market -- the sublime Cy Young caliber '74 campaign? Zack Wheeler is, like, good. He's just been playing for a team that minimizes how good he looks to people who don't know what to look for. Ouch.

The Oct. 14, 1974, St. Louis Post-Dispatch story on the Joe Torre trade had a great opening line: “Okay, Keith Hernandez. First base is yours.” Did you have a sense that Torre, who won the NL Most Valuable Player award as well as the batting title for the Cards three years earlier, was going to be traded during the 1974 offseason? KEITH HERNANDEZ: I was pretty certain that he would be, yes. I hit .351 that year at AAA Tulsa. They called me up and gave me a long look in September. SN: Would you say going into 1975 spring training that the first base position was yours to lose? KH: Even after the Torre trade I didn't feel it was mine to lose so much as it was mine to hold onto. I really wasn't ready emotionally at 20, I was still a little kid, you know, overawed by playing in the big leagues, facing guys like (Tom) Seaver. SN: Was that because of Ron Fairly's presence? The former bonus baby's final statistics for '75 came out very similar to the type of numbers you would normally produce during your career (.301 batting average/.421 on-base percentage.) When the Cardinals acquired Fairly from the Expos in December of 1974, did you think he was going to eat into your playing time? KH: I felt that, yeah, they got him as an insurance policy, but also a veteran bat off the bench. But at that age, I didn't have the brain to consider how St. Louis was molding the club. I learned a lot from Ron. He showed me how to break in my first baseman's mitt, even better than I knew how to break in a glove. He also taught me how to cheat around first base on defense. But at the same time, he was a no-nonsense guy, kind of a Marine, a rough and gruff guy. Look, he wanted the job, too, and I sensed his hunger to still want to play regularly — and why not? So when I started struggling, I felt his presence. It didn't help, but that's the name of the game — the game's full of competition.

It's the sophomore jinx, but also, more than that. It's the so obviously juiced ball.

If I set the under/over at 40 for Alonso's 2020 HR total. what do you take? Me, I take the under. (And if I'm not betting a lot of money, I'd hope to be wrong.)

Why would anyone dare second guess the Wilpons? Two first place finishes in 31 seasons. I should stop using that phrase because it's gonna become so cliche if it hasn't already, that it'll lose all meaning and all your eyeballs will just glaze over it. I know what to do ... next season at some point, I'll be saying two first place finishes in 32 seasons.

I didn't like the Arctic Blast photo as presented by Newsday. I like the photo but not the Newsday crop and to an extent, Newsday can't help it because of that strip format on the top of the page that's reserved for text. The shot should've included Pete's whole bat, and maybe, more of his body, I thought. That's a tall rectangle shot, not a square box shot. That picture would work better on the DN. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2019/20190709_NSD_02.jpg> On further review, Newsday could've helped it. Newsday doesn't always include that rectangular text strip at the top of the page. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2019/20190710_NSD_02.jpg>
