  1. Madoff Nearly Ruined the Mets. The Team Has Moved On. The death of the infamous investment banker who was serving a 150-year prison sentence recalls a chapter where a major-market team was forced to scramble to survive. Excerpt: There was a high-flying, if brief, period in Mets history when virtually every available dollar was cycled through investment accounts managed by Bernard L. Madoff. If the team signed a deal for radio rights, the station was asked for much of the money up front and it was handed over to Madoff, who made it multiply, seemingly without fail. If the Mets received a chunk of advertising cash from Pepsi or Budweiser, they would funnel that into the Madoff accounts, too. And when it came time to buy out Bobby Bonilla's player contract, they created an annuity, invested the immediate savings into a Madoff account, and expected to make millions on the transaction for both parties. “Put it in Bernie,” was how Saul Katz, the former president of the team, used to phrase it to colleagues in an indication of how intertwined the team's finances were with Madoff, who it was later discovered was running the largest Ponzi scheme in history. [***] [A]t the height of it, [Fred] Wilpon told a reporter at spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., “At least no one is sick.” Indeed, the owners survived the worst of it, mostly through the natural appreciation of major sports franchises. But it did not help that the team was terrible, failing to reach the .500 mark for the next six years. 2. Lotsa deGrom-themed number crunching over at fivethirtyeight.com (written before last night's Red Sox game): https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/jacob-degrom-is-outdoing-even-jacob-degrom/https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/jacob-degrom-is-outdoing-even-jacob-degrom/ Excerpts: But deGrom's misleadingly mediocre win-loss records also underscore another big theme of his career: how much the Mets have failed to capitalize on one of the greatest arms in baseball history. In deGrom's 187 career starts, the Mets have spoiled 24 outings in which he had a Game Score of 60 or better by losing while scoring two or fewer runs. That share — 12.8 percent of deGrom's total starts — represents the highest rate of spoiled starts for any pitcher in history with at least 20 total games meeting that criteria: Beyond his superlative pitching skills, Jacob deGrom's most impressive trait might be his ability to raise the bar ever higher for himself. The college shortstop turned ninth-round pitcher turned elbow-surgery survivor won the National League's Rookie of the Year honors in 2014, but he wasn't content merely to feature next to the other New York Mets fireballers — he had to outpitch them. He didn't stop at posting a sub-2.00 ERA over a full season (like he did in 2018), either, or at winning a second-straight Cy Young award (like he did in 2019) or even at striking out nearly 40 percent of opposing batters (like he did in 2020). Whenever you think deGrom has reached his peak, he finds another level of greatness.
  3. Todd Zeile is explaining how deGrom was a bit off today and didn't have his best stuff. But if he pitched every day like he pitched today, he'd be the best pitcher who ever pitched.

  5. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=62456 time=1619660435 user_id=68] By the end of this game, I was hoping the Mets would lose. Because deGrom's season stat line is unbelievable. He has a sub 1.00 ERA. He's allowed just two earned runs all season and for each earned run allowed, he's been tagged with a loss.

  10. I don't know how players could stick to one song. That'd be so boring. I'd have dozens. I'd change it up constantly, even in the same game.
  11. What would youse's walk-up music be if youse were Mets?
  12. Pete Alonso is on pace to hit his 100th career HR this season in what would be Alosno's 318th game played. If Alonso stays on pace, he will set the all-time MLB record for least games to 100 HR's, breaking Ryan Howard's record of 325 games. Howard obliterated the previous record, then held by Ralph Kiner (376 games).
  13. He's only four starts in, but still, no matter how you measure them, deGrom's on pace to fan 400+ batters this season.
  14. On Gilligan's Island The Hunter, loosely based on The Most Dangerous Game (S3E18, original air date 1/16/67), Gilligan, the Professor and Mr. Howell are tuned in to a radio broadcast announcing that the Dodgers shut out the Mets 4-0. Apparently, Gilligan bet Mr. Howell 300,012 bananas that the Mets would win that game.
  15. Quiz time: deGrom's game score tonight is 98. The Mets all-!time highest game score for a nine inning game is 99 by _____________. Guess the pitcher and include some game description or detail. Cone, the 19-K game with the cops lurking. That's right. After fanning 19 batters, Cone had two chances to record his 20th strikeout of the game as the last two Phillie batters, Wes Chamberlain and Dale Murphy, doubled and grounded out, respectively. 19. Well, he's on the last year of a two-year contract and he's not Cohen or Alderson's guy. He's a Wilpon leftover. So I'd say Rojas has several issues to deal with besides not winning as often as ownership expects the Mets to win. He's got problems.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Reid-Foley is pitching like a man who likes his Schaefer. His 93 seems to jump on guys like a guy throwing harder than that. ' I was consumed with these exact same thoughts throughout SR-F's entire outing tonight. I was amazed at how Foley was getting so many swinging strikes with a 93 MPH fastball and immediately thought of Sid Fernandez throughout Foley's outing - how Sid's unique delivery and wide body type hid the ball and Sid's release point for a few fractions of a second longer and so batters didn't pick up Sid's pitches as early as they'd pick up most other pitcher's pitches and so Sid's fastballs played like they were a few MPH's faster than they actually were.
  21. https://twitter.com/bobojeda19/status/1385381754102505476?s=21https://twitter.com/bobojeda19/status/1385381754102505476?s=21 I wonder if Ojeda has it in for Alderson. Here's what Ojeda had to say right after he was fired from his SNY gig in 2015: "The Wilpons and Mr. Saul Katz — the people who say they don't care about the team are sorely misguided," Ojeda said by phone, while boarding a flight to the Bahamas. "These are the biggest Mets fans you will meet. "Last I checked, Fred is not the general manager. Last I checked, Jeff is not the general manager. Last I checked, Saul is not the general manager. So the people they've put in those positions are ones who have failed, and what have they done? They have tried to make changes, bring in the right people." There was a natural follow-up: Was Ojeda saying that the Mets could not win under the current GM, Sandy Alderson? "I do believe that it's the guys on the field," was Ojeda's answer to that direct question. "If the guys pull together and rack up the W's, that's what it's all about. So many times, it's not the greatest team on paper (that wins). There are so many ingredients that go into creating a winning atmosphere. I think there is some work to be done on that winning atmosphere. I really do. And I think if those things are addressed in spring training, they'll be on their way. Of course, everyone in the industry knows that shitcanning baseball owners is the quickest way to the baseball blacklist, so consider that. https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/martino-ex-sny-analyst-bobby-ojeda-takes-jab-mets-gm-article-1.2102282https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/martino-ex-sny-analyst-bobby-ojeda-takes-jab-mets-gm-article-1.2102282
