How Will He Thrive in Twenty-Five?: Edwin Díaz
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
Is there a reliever that you're not down on? Is every reliever supposed to have a season like Dennis Eckersley's best or Mariano Rivera's best to satisfy you? Relievers give up runs. Just like starters give up runs. Accept it. If you regularly put peak Tom Seaver into the 9th inning of a tied game, he too would, on occasion, give up a run and get tagged with the statistical pitcher's loss. -
Eno Sarris, writing for The Athletic, ranks MLB's starting pitchers ahead of the 2025 season. Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal, respectively, receive his top two rankings. The Mets top-ranked starter is Kodai Senga, ranked #39, followed by Clay Holmes (#46), Tylor Megill (#57), Sean Manaea (#78), David Peterson (#82), Frankie Montas, Jr. (#106), Griffin Canning (#152) and Paul Blackburn (#161). Former Met Jacob deGrom is ranked 12th. Excerpt: It's impossible to get the *right* ranking for Jacob deGrom. Over the past four years, he has the best starter's ERA (2.01), supported by the best starter's K-BB rate (39.2 percent!!) and the best starter's Stuff+ (123). All of that is great. He's thrown 190 innings combined over those four seasons. Less great. He's got a new ligament, though, and Paul Skenes was the fifth-best pitcher in fantasy last year with 133 innings — could deGrom get there? Does your league have injured list slots? What do you do when he's hurt and doesn't have a timeline? How much are you willing to invest? deGoat was in my top 10 at one point, but this feels like a better place for the innings risk. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6211367/2025/03/21/sarris-mlb-starting-pitcher-rankings-fantasy-baseball/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6211367/2025/03/21/sarris-mlb-starting-pitcher-rankings-fantasy-baseball/

How Will He Thrive in Twenty-Five?: Brett Baty

Who Am I if the Mets Are Good? By Devin Gordon Mr. Gordon is the author of “So Many Ways to Lose: The Amazin' True Story of the New York Mets — the Best Worst Team in Sports.” https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/23/opinion/mets-baseball-new-york.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/23/opinion/mets-baseball-new-york.html Long opinion NYT piece on the Mets. Excerpt: The New York Mets managed to put together a perfect season last year, despite failing to win the World Series. This should be impossible — a title seems like a prerequisite for perfection — and for any other franchise, for any other fan base, it would be. But when you root for a team that's won just two championships in its 63-year history, and none since 1986 — a team famous not just for losing but for losing with cartoonish flair and bottomless invention — you learn to be a little flexible. For Mets fans, 2024 offered an unfamiliar combination: a feeling of accomplishment unlike anything we've experienced in decades (that's easy — very low bar) and the total absence of accompanying anguish (that's much, much harder). Yes, the Mets wound up getting brushed aside by the stacked Los Angeles Dodgers on that team's march toward its own championship, but a crucial part of what made 2024 so magical is what didn't happen to the Mets along the way. There was no epic collapse or humiliating blunder, no scapegoats, no lingering resentments. The Mets had a crazy run of historic moments that I'll be rewatching on YouTube for the rest of my life, and then we just got beat by a better team. Then, somehow, the mood got even better. In December, Steve Cohen, the team's billionaire owner, tempted the off-season's marquee superstar, Juan Soto, into ditching the Yankees, our hated crosstown rivals. Then, for good measure, Uncle Steve splurged and brought back Pete “The Polar Bear” Alonso, a fan favorite. Mr. Cohen and his front office deftly navigated two wildly different contract negotiations — a leaguewide bidding war for a generational player and an awkward staredown over a homegrown hero — and came away winners both times. Pause on that for a moment: Mets fans can actually trust the Mets front office to make smart decisions! It's no wonder that, three months into 2025 with spring training in full bloom and a new season nearly upon us, Mets fans are floating on air.

More scumbaggery from President Hitler with the Combover. This'll probably rank about 125th among the worst things the piece of shit did today. Jackie Robinson's Army career wiped from military website in DEI purge Excerpt: The military story of Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball after serving as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army, no longer exists on the Department of Defense's website as part of the Trump administration's wiping out of diversity, equity and inclusion within the federal government. https://www.aol.com/news/jackie-robinson-army-career-wipe-153152346.htmlhttps://www.aol.com/news/jackie-robinson-army-career-wipe-153152346.html

Have we ever made a team of 2-time Mets?
batmagadanleadoff replied to roger_that's topic in New York Mets Talk
Mike Jorgensen, David Cone, Hubie Brooks, Pedro Feliciano, Jeurys Familia, Bob L. Miller, Mike Jacobs. Do managers count? If so, Gil Hodges, Yogi Berra, Roy McMillan, Dallas Green (ugh!), Willie Randolph (double ugh!). But not Joe Torre, who never really "came back" to manage the Mets. Torre was already here when he was named player-manager. [FIMG=223]https://deanscards.blob.core.windows.net/thirdparty/5441932f.jpg[/FIMG][FIMG=253]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/a00AAOSwUPhnXHs8/s-l1200.jpg[/FIMG] If you don't count Torre for that reason, you have to take away Yogi. He came in as a player-coach, and never left until being fired as skipper. I included Yogi because he was a coach in between playing and managing. But yeah, he never left, either. -

=kcmets post_id=187275 time=1742052627 user_id=53] I think we've run out of two-time Mets. The funny thing is Ben Grimm could pound out some code and answer this question in one minute. -

Spring training programs from the 1970s
batmagadanleadoff replied to Marshmallowmilkshake's topic in New York Mets Talk
The Mets, of course, shared venerable Al Lang Field and its famous Sadecki Spot, with the Cardinals .... No. The Sadecki Spot was located at Miller-Huggins Field (now Huggins-Stengel Field), in front of the old cage at or near the infield referred to here in these parts as Butterball Field. Hackman's case happened to get world-wide attention because he's a celebrity -- a Hollywood actor of legendary status. It happens. Woman and child found dead and decomposing in Brooklyn apartment, NYPD says By Giulia Heyward Published Mar 13, 2025 at 8:11 a.m. ET Modified Mar 13, 2025 at 10:05 a.m. ET By Giulia Heyward Police on Thursday said they discovered the decomposing bodies of a woman and child in a Brooklyn apartment after being alerted to a foul odor emanating from it. NYPD officials said officers responded to a 911 call around 2 p.m. Wednesday and went to the apartment, which is located on Dumont Avenue at NYCHA's Unity Plaza complex in Brownsville. After gaining entry, police said they found a 33-year-old woman and 7-year-old boy unconscious inside. Emergency medical workers pronounced both of them dead at the scene. Officials said they were still investigating the pair's relationship and the circumstances of their deaths. Police officers were present at the building Thursday morning. The city medical examiner's office was also working to determine their causes of death, according to the NYPD. This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and has been updated with additional information. https://gothamist.com/news/woman-and-child-found-dead-and-decomposing-in-brooklyn-apartment-nypd-sayshttps://gothamist.com/news/woman-and-child-found-dead-and-decomposing-in-brooklyn-apartment-nypd-says ___________ These were ordinary citizens. The story was picked up in a local paper. You can imagine how many other ordinary people died under those same circumstances just today and yesterday, where their dead bodies weren't discovered promptly. It happens. And it tends to go unreported. Hackman's case was plastered all over the news only because he was a legendary Hollywood actor.

I don't think that the circumstances surrounding Hackman's death are so unusual -- at least in this sense: about 9,000 people die in the US every day. The odds are that on occasion, somebody's death will slip through the cracks and go unnoticed for longer than what is ordinary or expected. It happens --- usually to a decedent living alone -- this time to a married couple who each died close in time to each otber. Its just that this incident received worldwide attention because of Hackmqn's celebrity.

The language in the CBA is not complicated. I looked up the definition of service time as stated in the MLB CBA. It's what I should've done from the get-go. The CBA language is clear, straightforward and unambiguous. Excerpt: One full day of Major League service will be credited for each day of the championship season a Player is on a Major League Club's Active List. A total of 172 days of Major League credited service will constitute one full year of credited service. A Player may not be credited with more than one year of credited service, 172 days, in one championship season. The CBA leaves no doubt that a player cannot earn more than one year of service in a given season -- which was never an issue in this thread. And the CBA does not require a player to accumulate one year's worth of service time "in a given season". Which means that a player, logically, may combine partial seasons of service time. So all of those internet sites, including MLB's own glossary web-site are defining service time inaccurately or inarticulately when they state that a player must earn 172 days of service time in the same or given season to get one full year of service time.

Nobody's suggesting that a player can accumulate more than one year's worth of service time in a given season. The issue is whether a player can combine partial seasons of service time. Every internet source I've come across indicates that he can't.
