1. In the AL Central, all five teams have identical 2-4 records.
2. Frayed Knot wrote: But so far it's an 0-6 disaster with one game left. The pitching has been more or less decent [4.33 RA/G] but they've scored just NINE total runs! Talk about a NOffense! Marcel Ozuna is their leading hitter at .214 (also .214 SLG) and the team as a whole is slashing .137/.238/.220 // 458. That's a 38 OPS+ Meh. Every team will have had a five or six game losing streak by season's end. So the Braves had theirs out of the box. (Either that, or the Braves are destined to go 0-162. TBD) Do you suppose that this is a harbinger of utter awfulness to come on the Braves behalf? I don't. But we shall see.
3. It's only a few games into the new season, but ex-Met Wilmer Flores already has three HRs and is near the top of several league batting categories. Ex-Met Jacob deGrom was dominant in his comeback start: five scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits. His next scheduled start is this coming Saturday. Ex-Met Michael Conforto of the still undefeated 7-0 Dodgers leads the majors in doubles with four.
4. Mattingly was 17. I associate his tenure with the awful Jeterification of the franchise --- that is the aesthetic and philistine ruination of the stadium and disappearing the art deco neon uniforms and outfield pop art sculpture. The Marlins executed a brilliant and beautiful rebranding in 2012 and that fucking Jeter destroyed it to put his own bland vanilla face on the franchise.
5. A ball now hit off the 'new' sweet spot isn't going to have anymore juice behind it than one previously hit off the traditional sweet spot since it's not a bigger barrel, it's just a slightly relocated barrel. In fact it might even have somewhat less oomph since the center of the bat is traveling more slowly than the end no matter how fat or thin it is. "He invented the “Torpedo” barrel. It brings more wood - and mass - to where you most often make contact as a hitter." https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6243085/2025/03/31/mlb-torpedo-bats-players-intrigued/ I think we're both right. "The bats — with their torpedo-like shape — are custom-made to player preferences and are designed so that the densest part of the bat is where that particular hitter most often makes contact with the baseball, said Leanhardt, who became a field coordinator with the Miami Marlins in the offseason." https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6241862/2025/03/30/yankees-bats-aaron-leanhardt-marlins/
6. Youse mean pitchers should avoid pitching to the sweet spot? That's what pitchers have been doing, or trying to do, since baseball was invented.
7. My understanding is that a "torpedo" bat has a weightier sweet spot. Some of the bat's mass has been transferred to the sweet spot, the area on the bat that batters desire to hit the ball with. Balls struck at the sweet spot will now carry faster and farther. This has nothing to do with batters hitting the ball better while jammed. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6243085/2025/03/31/mlb-torpedo-bats-players-intrigued/ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6240911/2025/03/29/yankees-new-bats-torpedo-home-runs/ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6241862/2025/03/30/yankees-bats-aaron-leanhardt-marlins/
8. I just caught up to this story. IF the new bats did indeed cause all of those HRs, you can expect the rest of the league to begin switching over. Like pronto.

11. Boy does this website continue to suck.
12. Counting these things one-by-one, year by year, is trickier than I thought. Not really. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/leaders_bat_50_season.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/leaders_bat_50_season.shtml Also, perusing the list, Jose Reyes did it twice, winning the batting title in 2011 and batting .300 in 2006. Reyes' .300 BA from 2006 was "rounded up". That is, he batted .29984 in 2006. But baseball batting averages are expressed as rounded to the third decimal only. That's the rule, the hell with the math. In the record books and and on the backs of baseball cards, Reyes was a .300 hitter in 2006.
13. Jeez, if I hadn't finally decided to check into this thread, which I've been ignoring up until just this moment, I wouldn't have even known that today is Opening Day for the Mets. I had no idea. I'm slipping.
14. The Athletic ranks MLB's starting pitcher rotations. The Mets are ranked #20. Excerpt: 20. New York Mets Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Tylor Megill, Griffin Canning, Blade Tidwell (minors), Brandon Sproat (minors) Injured: Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas The Mets were able to bring back their ace from last year, Manaea, who changed his entire way of pitching en route to delivering a 3.47 ERA and 184 strikeouts over 32 starts. He'll miss the start of the season with an oblique injury. They signed Holmes, who added a changeup and cutter, and the results in spring training were impressive enough that the former reliever will be their Opening Day starter. Senga is healthy and his “ghost fork” pitch is still unhittable. Peterson and Megill are underrated and Canning is overrated. The oft-injured Montas is out with a lat sprain. But perhaps the most exciting development for the Mets is how impressive Tidwell and Sproat looked in spring training; both should debut and impact the Mets rotation later this year. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6231108/2025/03/26/mlb-pitching-rotations-rankings-starters-opening-day/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6231108/2025/03/26/mlb-pitching-rotations-rankings-starters-opening-day/

18. Maybe he'll ask us to guess how many jellybeans he has in his secret jellybean jar.
19. This commercial is one of those that's ingrained in my memory, word for word, sound for sound, note for note. It was in heavy, heavy rotation on "Channel Nine" during Mets game in its time. I watched the youtube clip and was able to anticipate every single word of dialogue, right down to the "Sing. You better sing, boy" I know that there are many members here who are about my age, and thus, from the same generation. Youse probably remember this commercial very well, too, if you were watching the Mets, which I know youse were.
20. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=187870 time=1742948860 user_id=68] Very few over the first 20 or so years. Shea Stadium, before the Doubleday owners began renovating the stadium, was absolutely brutal on batting averages. Personally, I believe that batting say .280 while playing half your games at Shea, was the equivalent of batting. 300 in a neutral stadium.

24. It's ridiculous the way relievers are judged. A starter gives up three or four runs and that's tolerable. But when a reliever allows just one run, it's a crisis. It's the reliever's fault. Not the fault of the starter that allowed four runs. Are relievers supposed to clutch up because it's the ninth inning of a tied game? Again with the clutch fairy. Do you know how rare it is for a pitcher to be dominant over an entire season? The team had eight innings to score more runs but it's always the reliever's fault. Because once the reliever enters the ninth inning of a tied game, the sins of the previous eight innings are wiped away and forgotten.
25. Finally something that might prevent Edgy from posting 50 times a day, every day. Go and watch a Twilight Zone rerun or something.
