=kcmets post_id=110066 time=1665000845 user_id=53] Well, I guess Michael Kay was my small issue. And I was fine to leave it at that. Until someone brought up Bonds* in a thread about a guy who broke a 61 year HR record. It's really not that hard to 'get' if you go back and re-read.
-
I have no issues, and I'm not going to play games with either of you. Well you have something, if you don't want to call it an issue. It's definitely some kind of gripe, if not "an issue". But now we're playing games. Whatever.

Emergency IGT 10/4 Game Two vs. Nats
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in Archived Game Threads
The Mets had a season to be extremely proud of. But if Cohen wants WS titles, like he said he did, (and why wouldn't he?) he's gonna hafta compete with the new breed of super teams -- like the Dodgers and the Yankees. Which means plugging up every hole. Improve wherever there's room for improvement. No holes. There's no room for James McCann's and getting the kind of woeful DH production the Mets got this year -- from a position that by definition, doesn't field and so is expected to rake because there's no need to compromise offense for defense there, is just unacceptable. I'm not nitpicking. This is what's gotta be done to field, not a playoff contender, but a WS contender. Cohen's got the cash to do this. He doesn't have to play that poorer team's game where getting into the playoffs is enough and then hope that the lucky crapshoot nature of playoff baseball goes your way. -

Emergency IGT 10/4 Game Two vs. Nats
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in Archived Game Threads
Congrats, Francisco. Nice 1st MLB homer. Not so congrats on the timing. Thanks (not!) for waiting until the Braves clinched the East to homer. Coulda used that homer earlier this week. Had the Mets beaten the Braves just once this week, this doubleheader sweep over the Nats woulda clinched 1st place and a first round playoff bye for the Mets. Also, the Mets spent 289 days in first place during this and last season combined, more than any other team in baseball. Just not when it counted, on the last day of each of the two seasons. Well, this is the Braves 5th straight division title. And they're the reigning WS champs. So this isn't any kind of a fluke. -

Edgy MD wrote: My wife, despite having far less knowledge of the context, has come to the same conclusion. So I did some digging. In the second half, the Braves are 20-16 in away games. (.560) They are 24-6 in home games (.800) I'm not saying they've set up an Astros-style sign stealing system at home, but they've definitely set up an Astros-style sign stealing system at home. How would they expect this to remain secret? Like with the Astros, eventually, 2022 Braves players will end up on other teams. Still, I don't rule this out.

There is hardly a team in all of baseball that wouldn't take deGrom, Scherzer, and Bassitt starting 3 games in a playoff series. The problem with having to play the wild card round, besides having to face the Dodgers in the very next round should the Mets advance, is that because the WC round is a two out of three series, it's virtually guaranteed that neither deGrom nor Scherzer will get to pitch more than one game against the Dodgers. The wild card series: Oct 7: deGrom Oct 8: Scherzer Oct 9: Bassitt The best of 5 NLDS could be: Oct 11: Carrasco/Walker on 5+ days rest (Or Bassitt on 5+ if they sweep) Oct 12: deGrom on 4 days rest Oct 14: Scherzer on 5 days rest Oct 15: Bassitt on 5 days rest (or Carrasco/Walker if they swept the wild card and Bassitt started game 1) Oct 16: Carrasco/Walker/Bassitt on 4 days rest, or push deGrom on 3 days rest with the season on the line. OR do they do this? if deGrom and/or Scherzer get lit up early then Showalter gets the wrath of the NY media. if they win, he is the genius who "went old school" - sometimes your 37 year old ace just needs to march out there the day after he threw 7 innings and throw another one to beat the evil MFY. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ARI/ARI200111040.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ARI/ARI200111040.shtml Oct 11: deGrom on 3 days rest Oct 12: Scherzer on 3 days rest Oct 14: Bassitt on 4 days rest Oct 15: deGrom on 3 days rest Oct 16: Scherzer on 3 days rest But no matter how the Mets set up their rotation, should they advance, they'd be playing not only a well rested Dodgers team, but a team that will have its' rotation set up optimally. And the Dodgers' 3 and 4's pitched way, way better than the Mets 3 and 4's this season. -

Benjamin Grimm wrote: This will be the first time the Mets have ever had two guys named "Francisco" in the starting lineup. It's even the first time they've had two Franciscos on the roster at the same time. He'll only be the fourth Met with that name, following Estrada (who is often listed as "Frank"), Rodriguez, and Lindor. It's also the first time the Mets had two Alvarezes on the team in the same season, if not at the same time. (R.J. Alvarez). The only other Alvarez in franchise history was Dario.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: After tonight's game, the NHOP number will start to make more sense again. Sure. But the less games remain in the season, the more needlessly elaborate the NHOP is. Might as well just go with the Magic Number from here on out if you know that including today, the Braves and Mets each have only four games left to play.

Chad ochoseis wrote: But 8 is probably in permanent limbo. Mind boggling. Stupefying. And the hysteria only grows. Here's a two day old piece claiming that Carter deserves a statue - never mind retiring his number. It's straight out of the retard school of creative writing and insightful thought and repeats all the tired and stupid Gary Carter tropes, you know, like last piece to the puzzle and a big World Series hit and blah blah blah. Straw and Doc and Keith had at least three times the Mets career Carter did but Carter deserves a statue because the Mets got him after Keith, Doc and Straw, not before. As if that even matters. And Keith Mitchell also had a big World Series hit in the Bill Buckner inning. Just as big as Carter's. And he was even laster than Carter. A laster piece to the puzzle. So let's all put up a statue of Kevin Mitchell in front of Citi Field. Who are these nuts who think Carter's number should be retired because he got a big WS hit? They must be QANoner's. Read this piece of horseshit: (Even money the writer was too young to even see Carter play with the Mets). 5 Mets players who have earned a statue outside Citi Field 4) NY Mets catcher Gary Carter Gary Carter, or "KID," was the final piece to the puzzle for the 1986 championship team. During the 1985 off-season, he was traded from the Montreal Expos to the Mets. Despite short tenure with the team, Carter is a top-five catcher in Mets history. Carter had one of the most memorable debuts in baseball with his new ball club. He hit a walk-off home run in the 10th against former Met Neil Allen on Opening Day 1985 in Queens. He finished sixth in the MVP race in his first year with 32 home runs and 100 RBIs. Game 6 of the 1986 World Series saw the Mets down to their final out, and champagne bottles were waiting for the Boston Red Sox in the dugout to celebrate. Carter refused to make the last out to end the Mets' season. A single to left would set the most remarkable comeback in baseball history. Base hits from Kevin Mitchell and Ray Knight would bring home Carter. What came next was a wild pitch from Bob Stanley and an error by Bill Buckner that won the Mets the game and eventually the World Series. If it wasn't for Carter's heroic act, the Mets would most likely have just one World Series trophy in their display room. https://risingapple.com/posts/ny-mets-5-players-deserve-statue-citi-field/2https://risingapple.com/posts/ny-mets-5-players-deserve-statue-citi-field/2

Random Baseball Stuff That Doesn't Need It's Own Thread
batmagadanleadoff replied to Ceetar's topic in New York Mets Talk
That mystery guy is either a coach or a minor leaguer. First of all, the earliest that picture could have been taken was 1978, the first year the Mets wore that uni. And the only players who wore numbers beginning with a '"6" in that uni, Mario Ramirez and Hubie Brooks, are definitely not that guy. (Orosco wore #61 for one game only in 1979, but that was a road game, and thus, a road uni. And that ain't Orosco anyways). Unless there's some other player that wore a # in the 60s at that time that the Mets uni database hasn't picked up yet. -
Edgy MD wrote: Is the spot gutted or do they use it for banquets and receptions and stuff? I was at Citi the other night, did not get a chance to look. But when I took a peek early in the year (early June), all the signage was still up. Since it was a COVID care triage last year, I assume the inside got gutted then. AFAIK the interior club spaces (Delta, Piazza31, etc) are still the only places in Citi used for banquets, receptions and stuff as they've have been since 2009. My guesses are that it has to do with lease agreements, and the idea that only certain clientele can logistically take it over. Ceetar's snide remark might be closer to the truth, even with the scuttlebutt associated with McFaddens, but it will probably be something with their own brand name built into itself, rather than a mom and pop style restauranteur looking to expand into a franchise. You got a ton of overhead to think about, plus the sunk cost of literally nothing like it less than a 15-20 minute walk around. Which means pretty much zero foot traffic when there isn't an event, and that's amplified from after the Met season finally concludes through the following March. I can see the Mets throwing up their hands and using the space as a rental for events, but I doubt movements to get it back to a restaurant & bar will happen until things start happening across Seaver Way. And while it was always hopping, the crowd it attracted was a bit of a turnoff to others, especially some here. And while that shouldn't necessarily be a factor with a bar/restaurant attached to a ballpark, I can see that being part of a hesitancy in waiting for other venues to start popping up in a 5-10 minute walk radius. Get a little diversity in venues that attract different crowds to thin the heard a little and get a more eclectic. mix of your clientele. I used to (sometimes), whenever some establishment would refuse to accept my large bill, tell them that the bill is legal tender and that the store was obligated to accept it, and its refusal to accept it was a violation of Federal law. I had no idea whether that was true or not, I made it up one day on the spot. It sounded believable. Eventually, I got around to looking that up and it turns out that businesses have the right to reject large bills. I had a feeling that that's how it was because McDonald's had signs in their restaurants that they wouldn't accept bills larger than $20, and I figured that it McDonald's was posting that, it had to be right, because they're so big that if they were refusing large bills without legal justification, the public would've been all over that in a flash.

I don't boo players but only because I'm too goddamn lazy to bother and exert myself. But it's a part of the game and sort of an assumed risk that the players consent to and should expect, if I may torture up a legal analogy. The idea that players shouldn't be booed because of the effort they put in to get to the majors in the first place doesn't resonate with me. They're also making millions and they're mostly lucky anyways. Because it's not all skill and effort. You have to have the right genetics for starters and that's like at least 75% of it -- and it's all luck. Like I've said before in some other thread, some guy inherits a body like a Greek God and he has world class Olympian class speed and can be one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history and an MLB player with an all-star ceiling. I'm talking about you, Prime Time. Somebody else inherits a shlubby accountant's body (not that there's anything wrong with being an accountant) and secretly suspects by the time he's in the third grade that he's never gonna be a pro baseball player or even a player on his Junior High School softball team. And if that isn't luck, then I don't know what is. Anyways, booing players is a manifest part of the culture of baseball and a reflection of the fans passion for the teams they root for
