Most kids are the equivelent of HS sophmores and the idea is to sign a bunch of them with hopes that, after planting them in your academy along with proper watering and so on, one or two will blossom into something a few years down the road. Throwing a bunch of money at one or two might get you a higher ceiling guy but it's a sttrategy that misses A LOT more often than it hits. I certainly did not mean to say that I expected any of these players to be Mets within the next year or two. If anything, it could be a "quick fix" for levels as high as possibly Kingsport but more likely the Dominican League Mets. But I would hope that Baseball America would take note of our signings and upgrade our analysis of the farm system based upon them if the signings are good. They know who all these kids are already probably. I want BA to say the the Mets did the best job of this period.
  2. AG/DC wrote: I'm not sure why I'd be pre-emptively pissed at Omar Minaya. The Mets have been damn aggressive in the international market on his watch. I suppose I'll wait then until I see what the bounty is. I want to see some arms that Jim Callis will put right into the Mets Top 10 Prospects list. . .even if they are years away.
  3. July 2nd is almost upon us, and with it another opportunity to add some quick fixes to the depth of the farm system. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2008/266316.html http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2008/266380.html Looks like the A's have the best chance at landing the crown jewel, which comes in the form of a 16 year old Dominican with an electric right arm. With all of Omar's talk about wanting to be major players in this market, I have to say that I'm a little pissed that we are seemingly not getting the best player(s). Maybe Bernazard ought to be spending less time undermining the major league manager and more time down in Boca Chica doing his actual job.
  4. Senseless move. Minaya had better pray that he clears waivers.

    Omar watch?

I'm more concerned over Jeff Wilpon ordering short-sighted "future be damned" moves as opposed to Minaya doing them on his own just to save his skin.

    Omar watch?

I think that he gets one more managerial decision (either keeping Manuel or one more hire) plus another foray into the Free Agent/Trade market in order to retool this team. This coming international signing period will be important for him also.
  7. Vince Coleman Firecracker wrote: ="Nymr83"]none of those guys are highly rated enough that i'd hesitate for evena second to bring in Teiziera or Dunn. No, I definitely agree. If they can sign Teixiera, they need to do it even if it means Carp and Davis and Murphy and Duda and Martinez and Evans all have to fight over the LF spot. As for Dunn, I know he's a great hitter, and I'd LOVE to have someone with a .384 OBP and .491 SLG on this team, but if he was batting below .230 in mid June I think New York would eat him alive. There are so many loud, stupid voices in the New York media that would never be able to see his value and would constantly be calling him soft and whatnot. I wish he could work out well here, but I don't see it. This town barely tolerates Beltran, who has a lot more "visible" value (stolen bases, batting average, freaking RBI, etc) than Dunn would. Don't underestimate Burrell either, I can see him fitting in nicely in the 5 hole behind Beltran.
  8. ="Benjamin Grimm"]Why are you posting your interesting little questions elsewhere? Especially since that elsewhere is teeming with thugs? Old habits die hard.
  9. metirish wrote: Question - If we assume three starters and we are choosing two then why have a fifth starter competition ? I meant that as one of the six choices to fill the two spots with.
  10. I came up with an interesting little question this morning and posted it elsewhere. However, the folks over at that place would rather gang up and bully some newbie with insults and marvel at their own self-professed magnificance rather than talk baseball today. So I pose it to you. Looking forward to hearing some actual intelligent insight. . . ------------------------------------------------------------------ Choose two of the following six options, along the price you would pay for each of your selections, for the rotation next year (assuming that Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey occupy three of the five slots). -Sheets -Sabathia -Pedro -Perez -Dempster -Spring Training competition for the 5th starter between C. Vargas and Niese If you think that I left out an option then please feel free to add it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  11. Heir apparent?
  12. It's not so much that he is over-rated than he is "over-beatified". That said, can you imagine if he ever became a Met through some bizarre set of circumstances and then pulled an Alomar? Given that he is who he is, I really believe that he would be assassinated by someone.
  13. If we are very, very lucky than Randolph is as inept, clueless, delusional, paranoid, arrogant, "entitled", not nearly as "classy" in real life as the "Pride and Pinstripes" folks would have us believe, and difficult to work with as his worst moments would seem to indicate that he is. If it is all true than I will not feel as bad over the perceived organizational problems (Bernazard, Jeff Wilpon, the indecision and eventual ruthlessness over how this was handled.) If Willie was really that bad than the perceived badness of what remains diminishes.
  14. I've been a serious fan of this team since 1980, so that means that the Seaver trade was a little before my time. With that said, there are three times that I have been disheartened and embarrassed by the organization. . . 3) When they fired Joe McIllvane in the middle of 1997 2) The Kazmir trade 1) Today
  15. Is it McKay Christianson?
  16. The Wilpons are definitely a concern to me. You can deal with bad GMs, bad managers, and bad teams. Those are all temporary. Bad owners are really, really hard to shake off.
  17. AG/DC wrote: ="metirish"]At times I think the Mets are as big a mess as the Knicks. I'm not there yet. I'm not down with a lot of their choices, but there's little reason to think Randolph is less than a good man. And there's little reason to think Thomas is more than a bad one. To a lesser extent, I have similar feelings about the Wilpons and the Dolans. That's something. Well put.
  18. I think that it is uneccesary and cruel to fly those men all the way from New York to California only to fire them
  19. I was big on Backman too and I still think that he should be considered. That said, I think that John Stearns might actually provide a lot of the positives that many people are seeing in Backman (fiery, hard-nosed, do whatever it takes to win, etc.) without any of the extra baggage that Backman would bring.
  20. I envision the Mets in 2009 going with a big money free agent at one of either first base or leftfield and cheaply and internally at the other. Ideally, I would want to see them go hard after Mark Teixiera for first base (which would then place Carp in the mix for leftfield along with Evans, Pagan, Chavez, Tatis, Anderson, and maybe even Nixon now if Trot endears himself here) with the backup to that being Adam Dunn for leftfield (which then puts Carp in the mix at first with Evans, Anderson, I would think Tatis. . .why can't he play there??. . .and whoever else). Either way, contingent on Carp doing well in AAA during the 2nd half and picking up LF well in spot duty the rest of the season and more intensively during the winter either at Instructional Camp or the Arizona Winter league, I see him with a pretty significant role in the majors next season.
  21. I was wondering, if we decline the option on Delgado after the season, do we still get the compensitory draft choices if he signs elsewhere or does the declining of the option year nullify that?

    AAAA

Frayed Knot wrote: Agreed. You can't be labeling someone as a AAAA player who has yet to even reach AAA (aside from this emergency call-up). He's too young and hasn't been around long enough to know what he is/will be. As far as the Atlantic League goes (plus similar independants) they'll have the occasional guy who'll parlay his performance there into a ML job (usually w/a stop in the minors first) but, from an overall quality standpoint, none of those leagues have a high enough level of talent to serve as a feeder system for these so-called AAAA players. Yeah, but what the Atlantic League also has is the Carl Everetts of the world whose time has past in the major leagues but are still a few years away from retirement and whose names still have a modicum of box office appeal. To me that is another type of "AAAA" player.

AG/DC wrote: I think many teams have systems full of those guys. Enough offense to make them interesting if they could play anywhere else at a big league level. Evans and Dan Murphy also qualify for the Mets Add Jason Phillips, Justin Huber, Earl Snyder. And I understand that these guys will get over-exposed if used regularly, but that doesn't mean they can't wiin some games if given their spots. So what is the difference between a guy who will be "overexposed" and a legitimate major leaguer? Is it always just talent shining through or can it be work ethic? Can a guy like Evans learn from his struggles and make it or is he just doomed to AAAA status?

    AAAA

metirish wrote: I had forgot about Brazell and didn't realize he saw so little time in the big leagues , made the PCL All- Star team in 07 with Omaha batting .307 with 32 home runs that season. Maybe he could have been Mike Jacobs. The Mets have had a run of "almost" prospects at first base lately. Jacobs has kind of made it as a Kingman-esque type player, but then you had Brazell and Ian Bladergroen, who put up the stats in the minors and never panned out in The Show. Hopefully Carp breaks the cycle and really becomes something special for the Mets.

Willets Point wrote: Nicely put. Would be interesting if there were a level of independent AAAA teams around to put pressure on MLB players and MLB teams though. I think that the Atlantic League comes pretty close to that.
