  2. What is that thing behind her right shoulder? It looks like Yoda flipping the bird to the camera.

Glaus gives them time to bring him along more slowly ... or until Glaus gets hurt which will probably be May at the latest. This makes Adam LaRoche available. Given that most of the usual free-agent signing suspects don't have a need at 1B, he might not be all that pricy.
  4. #1 is a tossup for me between Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou (Coen brothers not getting much mention in this thread so far) and The Lives of Others. State and Main would be somewhere on my list. Go, you Huskies! Also Little Miss Sunshine and maybe Juno and possibly maybe A Serious Man. Also Black Book (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809421156/info), a Dutch film about the Holocaust which didn't attract much attention.

  6. 2006 wasn't nearly the nutpunch for me that 2007 was. This article - still my all-time favorite Fafif piece - says it all. http://faithandfear.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2006/10/15/2419049.html It was a good team in 2006, but the post-season pitching staff was comprised of Glavine and duct tape. So I wasn't even expecting the Mets to get to Game 7 against the Cardinals. And that was a nasty curve that got Beltran. 2007 was awful. Depressingly, horribly, crushingly awful.
  7. Jerry Grote, for transforming the people who transformed the Mets from lovable clowns into World Series champs.
  8. June 27, 2008 - Carlos Delgado, who was batting .235 at the time and sucking so badly that there was serious talk of cutting him and trading for Richie Sexson (?!?), sets a Met record with 9 RBIs to help beat the Yankees 15-6 at MFYSII. He then goes on to have possibly the best three month stretch of any position player in Met history, and had a real shot at being named MVP if the Mets had managed to win the division.
  9. Thanks for the daps, guys... but I'm a centaur man. I'm honored. But the "Sorry!" post gets my vote. More of a fusillade than a bullet, but Go break a rib or four in your parade, you insufferable shits, then hitch a ride home from Leyritz would win the award all by its lonesome.
  10. I've got to admit that I don't get all the Tim Raines luv. I was a Tim Raines fan. I like speed and OBP. He was fun to watch and my memory is that he was good but not great defensively. I enjoyed seeing the Expos not suck for a few years back in the Raines/Dawson days. There's no question that Raines had an excellent career. But his stats aren't clearly HOF quality. His career OPS+ of 123 is less than five points better than Andre Dawson's, Dale Murphy's and even Dave Parker's, and it's not as good as Burks, McGriff, or Mattingly. It's one point less than Rusty Staub's and five points less than Jim Wynn's. I wouldn't vote for any of those players, but if I had to choose one, I'd flip a coin to decide between Mattingly and Murphy. Alomar, Larkin, Blyleven and Martinez are on my ballot. Maybe Trammell, if I'm in a good mood on the day I'm voting. McGwire is a tough call for me for the same reasons Edgy gives. I'll vote for Raines to join Bert Campaneris, Tommy John, Dwight Evans, Al Oliver, and hundreds more in the hall of Really Good Ballplayers Who Aren't Quite HOFers. Enjoy the honor, and be sure to keep a spot warm for Scott Rolen.
  11. I never understood how it was that Josh Barfield started sucking after that impressive rookie season. This Indians fan (http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/?p=13930)seems to think that some of it was due to him getting lost in the 2B shuffle in Cleveland. Even if the "dump Castillo/sign Hudson or Figgins or somebody" scenario works, extra 2B depth would still be a good thing, no?
  12. Ollie Perez...dl'ed May 3 through July 8. 60 games. (60/162)(12M) = $4,444,444.44, which I think puts us over the top.
  13. The Schneid was out from April 16 through May 30 at $4.9M per year. (40/162)(4.9M) = $1,209,877
  14. Great article. I just put a request in to my boss asking for a framed poster of me as a centaur for my office wall.
  15. 2B: 1. Alfonzo 2. J. Reyes 3. Castillo 4. Valentin 5. Easley 6. McEwing 7. Cora 8. Scutaro 9. A. Hernandez 10. Woodward Most counterproductive: Matsui
  16. This guy got it about right in a letter to the NYT:
  17. I'm vote #35, though it doesn't matter a whole lot to me. The Mets don't get any better when the MFY's lose. I tried to eliminate guys like m.e.t.b.o.t. who were posting from the keyboard of another user. For a math geek, this is like finding out there's no such thing as Santa Claus.
  18. Hindsight's always 20-20. In 2002, Wright was just another good prospect who might or might not have panned out and Cruz was coming off a strong season in Toronto. And the Mets needed an outfielder who wasn't named Roger Cedeno. I think if that trade had been made, we would have loved it in 2002.
  19. I'm proud to say that I only remembered one of those 1981 albums. I've posted two quizzes, one of which is shamelessly plagiarized from an Edgy post. http://www.sporcle.com/games/happycamper/bob_dylan_blues http://www.sporcle.com/games/happycamper/people_who_died
  20. i think when you consider the advantage the NL's pitchers have over the AL's, the overall effect might average out, though. I'd guess not. - The AL DH vs NL replacement difference is larger. - Probably more important, pitchers bat less frequently in general and almost never bat in key situations, even if they're "good" hitters. So the difference in pitchers' hitting ability doesn't matter very much.

  23. Pretty much the same as marathon, except that I got #2 and missed #3. I think #3 would get the nod as "Most Underrated and Easily Forgotten Metly Star".
