  1. It's a shame. I wish him luck, and I hope he has a good plan B.
  2. Mets Willets Point wrote: The $22,131,148 the Yankees saved on A-Rod is will be diverted to the $22,142,857 being spent on Tanaka's AAV. The Yankees are giving Tanaka an anti-aircraft vehicle? The North Koreans must be a bigger threat than we thought.
  3. I'm rather annoyed that the #3 prospect at second base is some guy named Mookie Betts. That nickname's been retired, son.
  4. Mejia's the favorite if he shows up to camp 100% healthy, but I'm not sure if that's a given.
  5. I'd like to see Lannan earn a spot the team as a long reliever/spot starter. I want either Mejia or Montero to step up and claim the 5th starter.
  6. Edgy MD wrote: Has a lot in common thematically with Hot Tub Time Machine. The main difference is this movie's version of "Lou" --- Gary --- is the protagonist. I didn't make that connection when I saw it, but that's spot on.
  7. Oh well, he's somebody else's problem now. What's mind-boggling is that nothing that happened in the past year appears to have humbled him even slightly. Or to put it another way, I don't get that he doesn't get it.
  8. I think/hope he's spot-on with Montero. I'm optimistic one of the two shortstops will pan out, but they're both a couple of years away. You can't have too much pitching depth in your system, but position players are generally safer bets and we appear short on them. Still, it's the best the system has looked in a while.
  9. A-Rod should have figured out that the one thing benefiting him to this point in the court of public opinion is that the full details of the league's case against him have not been made public yet, and the best way to keep that from happening would be to quietly walk away. The league obviously felt that the evidence against A-Rod corresponded to 2+ violations, and ultimately the arbiter agreed with that.
  10. I think any thread titled "Alex Rodriguez 2014" should be put in the non-baseball forum.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: I'm kind of hoping that their load up on soon-to-expire medications DOES work for them, in the short run, at least a little. Because then they'll almost certainly double down and add Barry Zito and Jonathan Broxton and Brad Penny and Dontrelle Willis and some other guys who had a nice 2005. They'll almost have no choice. You'll be watching a Yankee game in mid-June, half paying attention, the team'll be six out, and Al Leiter will be talking about that big series coming up with Minnesota, seeing it as a big chance to make up some ground against the hot division leaders, when all of a sudden, in the sixth inning, you'll be saying, "Holy crap, where did Juan Pierre come from?" You'll be watching a Yankee game in mid-June, half paying attention, the team'll be six out, and Al Leiter will be pitching.
  12. I'm not sure how you justify four years for Granderson but would balk at three for the younger Drew.
  13. Edgy MD wrote: Am I OK with Recker? I'm not NOT OK. I imagine some vets will be brought in on minor league deals. I won't be too upset if a major league signee isn't among them, but since catchers get hurt, a big league vet would be nice. But then, our conversation gets further and further away from Stephen Drew. A healthy Stephen Drew can give you an OPS+ at or above 110. Shortstops who can do that aren't so easy to come by. Tejada has broken 90 in the past, but a full rebound season would still make him a poor bet to break 100. By contrast, Ike Davis has broken 110 in three of his four seasons, and Duda had a 118 OPS+ last year to compare with the 123 that Morales gave the Mariners. This isn't meant to knock Morales -- of this year's free agent outfield class, only Choo and Beltran are demonstrably better hitters. But Drew would improve the Mets more.
  14. You can't get excited about a waiver claim, but a 3.50 ERA over 65 innings doesn't appear beyond him. Well worth the very low risk.
  15. Hardy (and Asdrubal Cabrera in Cleveland) will look more interesting to me next season than they do now. I think Miller is staying in Seattle. Franklin has his bags packed, but I don't see him as a SS. I still might gamble if the M's sell him for pennies on the dollar, but I'm not holding my breath. Elvis Andrus has only exceeded an OPS+ of 90 once. Ruben Tejada has done it twice. Caveat emptor. Gregorius is OK. He has the potential to be better than OK if he learns to hit major-league lefties, but note the "if" in that statement. He wasn't any more highly regarded a prospect in 2013 than Montero is likely to be now (plus we might need Montero too), so I'd be careful with what I offer. I don't see why a third-round pick for Drew would be a dealbreaker. If we have the money to do it he's my top choice.
  16. He had a .777 OPS (111 OPS+) for Boston last year. It comes after two down years affected by an ankle injury, but the OPS+ is consistent with his best seasons in Arizona. He plays shortstop, and will be 31 in March. He's generating far less press on the rumor mill than Jhonny Peralta did, despite Peralta's PED suspension. What's up with him?
  17. Like I said in the other thread, he has ace upside, and I think that justifies the risks.
  18. Franklin is a very good bet to be moved -- the Mariners don't see him as a shortstop and they just got Robinson Cano. The first question is whether the Mariners were right in not seeing him as a shortstop.
  19. Two years is definitely risky at Colon's age, but he has ace upside and more lives than a cat.
  20. I don't know if I'd call it a sham, but the way it was handled was a mistake. A AAA player with Matsui's K/BB ratio in Japan would not have been considered an elite prospect the way Matsui was (and no, it wasn't just the Wilpons or the Mets in general). He had to become a more defensive swinger just to survive a couple of years in this league. I don't recall anybody (Met or otherwise) raising red flags about his throwing arm, either, even though it was obvious after about a month that it was not strong enough for a major league shortstop. If a minimal amount of homework was done on him by anybody, that person was not affiliated with the Mets, nor did I read about it on any of the baseball sites I look at. I felt bad for Kaz after a while, because I thought he was performing to realistic expectations. I'm glad he at least had a good playoff run with the Rockies to show for his time here (even if that grand slam he hit in Philly would have been a routine third out in most parks).
  21. I'm glad; Hef deserved not to be simply jettisoned. Is it a major-league or minor-league contract? If it's major-league, what exactly did the Mets save by non-tendering him?
  22. Haven't decided. Either is a much safer bet, but a healthy Kemp makes us contenders.
  23. The answer to that question requires knowing how much money we have to spend. I hope Alderson's at least gotten a price quote on both Kemp and Ethier.
  24. I don't think he came at enough of a discount given his current career trajectory, but one year won't kill us. I guess I want to see how the rest of the market plays out before deciding if the Mets got value, so I'm neutral for the time being.
  25. I would agree that two of Hardy's last six season were All-Star caliber (especially when defense is factored in). But two of those seasons were also worse than what Tejada did for us in 2011 and 2012. You have to factor in both sides of Hardy' stats when you decide what one year of him is worth.
