  1. And Reyes yet lives.
  2. Bobby Wahl got three strikeouts out of five batters faced in his Vegas debut. I wasn't aware that we had seven better relief pitchers. Or is it eight?
  3. It's SHOWTIME!!!!
  4. I like that the relief pitcher involved is major-league ready; that's already progress relative to last year at this time. But I bet they could trade Mesoraco or Bautista and get nothing but money for the international market in return, and I'd be OK with that. The deal will look better or worse depending on what Zack Britton gets (recovering from an injury, averaging about a walk per inning).

So there's a lot more security for Cleveland in that trade. Plus Cleveland got a second major league reliever (under control for five more years) in that deal as well.
  6. He's going for an MRI tomorrow with a visit to a foot specialist. This was probably what Cespedes wanted in the first place.
  7. Wahl will get at least one save for us this season. Possibly tomorrow night in the Bronx.
  8. A groundball pitcher who didn't always get rewarded by his defense. He took the rap for WS blown saves that were actually the fault of the infield. He didn't fare any better in that regard this year. He's much better than his numbers.
  9. The reliever that they got is capable of stepping in to the Mets' pen right now, which I suppose makes this an improvement from the deadline deals last year. But like Sherman said, the A's could have called him up but didn't.
  10. They could have waited until 3 pm on the 31st to pull the trigger on this one. In the meantime, they have set the bar low for two-month rentals -- including several that the Mets still need to trade.
  11. Centerfield wrote: This is Beltran all over again. Unfortunately, yes. While the possibility that the Mets' front office and doctors missed this is regrettably plausible, the situation is entirely consistent with the Mets' tendency to get guys back on the field as quickly as possible, even when not in the team's best long-term interests.
  12. Centerfield wrote: I hate this. Really like Familia. Hope we can resign him in the winter. I also really like Familia. I hate that it's necessary. As far as the offseason goes, he's one of several closers I would consider. He's more defense-dependent than most closers (especially infield defense), and the Mets' ability to improve there would affect how much I value him. As for prospects -- their top 3 are really good. I'd love to get Jesus Luzardo, but that is probably wishful thinking. AJ Puk is recovering from TJS, but I could live with that if the A's can't. Sean Murphy is a very nice catching prospect. I don't know if a rental could get us one of them, though.
  13. He doesn't have to run while playing golf. The Mets dealt for him and signed him to contracts twice, so they know all this (unless the medical staff are spectacularly bad at doing their jobs, which...). Surgery in June would have had him close to ready by Spring Training. So why is he playing? It seems to me that he can only DH without this surgery.
  14. Lugo. Gsellman's tank is empty right now.
  15. The Mets may have just lost the most obvious suitor for Familia when the Indians gave up their top prospect to get Brad Hand. Hand has the obvious advantage of two years under control plus a team option (the Indians also got Adam Climber, a promising set up guy with five years of control), but maybe with Hand off the market Familia becomes the most desirable reliever.
  16. https://www.milb.com/milb/news/new-york-mets-jeff-mcneil-producing-career-best-season/c-285583806 A nice article on McNeil. It includes a lot of quotes from Peter Alonso, including this dandy: "The thing about baseball, people think age matters, but it really doesn't. You've got guys in the big leagues right now that are 19 and guys that are like 40 and have a wife and kids and stuff like that. It doesn't matter how old, big, strong and fast you are. You've just got to perform -- that's it."

Nymr83 wrote: the only way a deal happens is if degrom wants to take a "paycut for security" type deal, the kind of deal that makes the Mets look like geniuses if he stays healthy and makes his agent look like one if he doesn't. He's one injury away from getting nothing, so the security matters. The Mets could work that to their advantage if they stop twiddling their thumbs. I'd start at 5 and 110 -- 15 next year, followed by 20, 25, 25, and 25 -- and see where it goes.
  18. If the agent wants to do what I'd do if I were deGrom's agent, that's his prerogative. I for one see no reason not to talk extension. I also see no reason to make a big deal out of this.
  19. I think somebody upstairs sees sentimental value in getting Reyes and Wright to share the left side of the infield one more time. Personally, I think Reyes can and should play shortstop for the Long Island Ducks. THEN he might sell a ticket or two. As for Smith... I think he needs to spend time unlearning everything he was taught about pulling the ball as much as possible. That might be hard to do in Queens. Plus he's probably going to have to learn to play the outfield much better if he has any future here. Send him down, give him a chance to regain value, and then figure out what to do with him.
  20. Outlawing the shift would make as much sense as the NFL outlawing running backs by committee.
  21. The skill set is there, but he's struck out 32 times in 84 ABs in AAA so far. Some patience (on his part and ours) is needed.
  22. 3 for 5 last night, including a double and a home run. After 104 at bats at AAA, his line is .398/.452/.677. I really hope Cabrera gets dealt over the break.
  23. The Fielding Bible had our infield defense at -68 runs saved last year. So far this year, we're at -41. Cabrera is a big part of that, and Frazier has not been the problem, but if it weren't for Manny Machado an Xander Bogaerts we'd be dead last in the majors at shortstop as well as second base. That's a problem that needs solving.
  24. I'm with you on this CF. As for first base: our best prospect is a first baseman currently in AAA after ripping the leather off the ball in AA. That's a non-starter, or at least it should be.
  25. I think it depends on when Cabrera is traded. After all the bad breaks we've gotten over the past three seasons, I keep hoping that McNeil turns out to be the good break that turns the team around.
