  1. It's not out of line with the other relievers' contracts so far. And Gordon did put up some great numbers the past two seasons over a lot of innings. Of course, the possibility exists that he emptied his tank, so caveat emptor. But there are still a couple of good relievers out on the market. Somebody is going to wind up with a bargain.
  2. I'm not sure I'd necessarily want Castro doing the bulk of the catching, but he seems to be starting to get it as a major league hitter, and he would provide an acceptable degree of insurance in case we brought a young guy in who struggles a bit.
  3. The Mets could use a solid #2 starter, but I'm not certain any of the above fit. Javy is coming off two down years, and Burnett has never had the kind of season that would justify the salary he's likely to get. Barry Zito maybe -- it might not be a coincidence that his numbers slipped when Peterson came here -- but tell me what the asking price is first.
  4. I'd have been willing to offer Giles more than that, but it looks like San Diego was his first choice all along. Perhaps the Yankees really will give Crosby the chance. I could see a small deal for Jason Michaels as a platoon, and reserving their resources for a bat at DH and the pen. I just can't see Jeter in center.
  5. It looks like something similar to Cameron for Nady (freeing salary to do something else, but not getting an equal player in return), except Nady has a bit more to recommend him. I'm not sure I'd want Julio blocking younger guys. I could almost see it for Steve Kilne, because we're thinner from the left side, but he's also coming off a bad year. And Benitez only had one year (his rookie year) like Julio's last season, so it's not a fair comparison.
  6. It depends on the price. Grudzelainek is a good fielder and would be an upgrade with the bat and glove, but not so much of one that I'd pay a lot for him. Given what we have at AAA, I don't think I'd go long-term with him either.
  7. Philadelphia fans look for reasons to not like their best players. Abreu fizzled out late last year, but he's still an OBP machine and a solid all-around player. Burrell and Manny in the same outfield? Met fans would enjoy that.
  8. Hall can field the position, but he would constitute a significant downgrade in offense for that position from last year. The Mets would really have to undervalue Heilman to consider this worth doing. What about some rookie catchers that are likely to be available? Shoppach has been mentioned a lot, but perhaps Ryan Garko (the Indians), or Dioner Navarro or Russ Martin (the Dodgers), could be had as well. Castro's presence would give the Mets the luxury of having patience with the younger player.
  9. That's a no-brainer. Konerko is supposed to be a pretty good fielder, and Thome's chances of staying healthy are probably (does anybody have stats on this?) better as a DH. So basically they have a rookie replacing Rowand, and Thome replacing Carl Everett. A little bit dicey on both ends, but it also gives them a chance of being even better than last year. I'd still make them the favorites.
  10. Interesting analysis, and I'm sure GM's do something similar all the time. The question then becomes how certain you are of a prospect's value, and whether or not wins in a coming season are more valuable than wins in the future. I'd be curious to see how the Delgado trade would look in this analysis, and how contracts to players like Delgado, Wagner, Pedro, and Beltran stack up with Manny's.
  11. That would be a wonderful deal for the Red Sox even with Shoppach added.
  12. We needed a lefty outfielder who could play all three positions, and while Tike might not be a great hitter, he should fill the role adequately at basically no cost. So the bench at present is Tike, Nady, Castro, Woodward, and an infielder to be determined. It's looking less and less likely that Eric Valent will get another chance in the majors as a Met. Hopefully he'll latch on elsewhere.
  13. Bert made less than a million last year. I'd offer $1M to bring him back, but no more than that, and for one year only. Oh crap, we still have Takatsu. If he makes the roster, it had better be because he had a surprisingly good spring. With Eyre gone, I don't know if there are any LOOGY's on the market or the block, in which case Ring and/or Hamulack had better step up. I'd like to see a fair competition for the last two spots, with a number of guys already in the organization capable of filling those roles.
  14. But how often will the good Esteban Loiaza show up? He should be more than adequate as a fifth starter, which is all Oakland really needs right now, but that's a lot to pay for a #5. I'd have figured they'd spend whatever money they have on a bat.
  15. I'd have to start with Lenny, but Piazza has to be on the list, and so does Mookie. Seaver, of course. Murph and Ralph Kiner, if you want to extend the list beyond players. Wally Backman, Doc for all his flaws, Pedro with a few more years like this one. Honorable mention to Fonzie, Robin, and Olerud, with Piazza the core of the best Met line-up ever.
  16. Well, it's what he's being paid to produce. I'll settle for any improvement over last year.
  17. Well, we also got more (Piazza and Leiter) than anybody else got who dealt prospects, although in hindsight they got more for Leiter than they did for Piazza. I'm not sure how they'll fare this time around. Hanley Ramirez is high on "tools" but low on actual performance, and Jacobs and Petit don't have the "tools" and "stuff" that a lot of scouts like but keep performing well.
  18. That list of prospects surprised me. The CWS evidently have a lot of confidence in Thome fully recovering his health and his stroke. I guess we'll see if it's warranted. It could still work to the Sox benefit, but the exchange had to exceed the Phillies' most optimistic expectations going into the offseason.
  19. 4 years and $28M would have been my limit on Ryan. A lot of free agent relievers are happy right now. Where is Toronto getting this money? They were rumored to be making a big offer to Burnett, too. God, I hope Wagner doesn't turn around and insist on five years now. Not that I know who else would even consider that.
  20. I'm interested if it's free.
  21. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teams/marlins3.shtml This shows the Marlins attendance records, up to this year. They were actually doing just fine until the 98 fire sale, with especially strong years in their inaugural season and the championship year. They never recovered from 98, though, bottoming out with a disastrous sub-million attendance in 02. Even winning again in 03 didn't undo the damage, but in fairness the attendance has gone up each of the past three seasons (it was 1.8 million this year). It still wasn't great, but the area appeared to be regaining some confidence in the organization. Now, I see no reason not to expect another free-fall.
  22. Which only serves to reinforce the idea that Minaya could have protected Petit if he wanted to. It also reinforces the idea that the Marlins don't care what they get in return as long as they save money. So how long before the league buys out the Marlins and gives Loria another team to own, while continuing to say every spring that the Nationals sale will be resolved by the All-Star break?
  23. Javy's last two years weren't that good, and the fact that he was already chased out of New York once, and that a second team wants to get rid of him after one year, is really discouraging. Although Benson hasn't pitched to his promise either. I don't see much separating the two, honestly. If they can be persuaded to part with Chad Tracy or one of their young outfielders like Carlos Quentin or Conor Jackson, I'd be willing to trade Trachsel and Bannister and take on the extra money. Otherwise it's like trading Bannister for nothing.
  24. Wagner's trying to push up the Phillies' offer, but it would be a major upset at this point if he doesn't sign with the Mets. Hopefully we won't be paying more per year than the Yankees pay Rivera ($10.5M), but we'll see.
  25. I didn't vote because it can go either way, and I'm not convinced somebody else won't be brought in just yet. If it comes down to the two of them, one of them needs to step up his game.
