  1. Not sure what the Reds need Womack for. Those two prospects better not have any value.
  2. I could see the value of a switch-hitting utility outfielder, but not if it requires beating $2M, and certainly not if it requires a draft pick.
  3. Overbay has always intrigued me. He hasn't fulfilled his potential, but there's still a chance that he could. Last year he got off to a great start, but then got hurt and wasn't the same afterwards. He could simply level off or turn into John Olerud, and right now it's not clear which way he'll go. Dave Bush has done respectably in two half-seasons pitching in the AL East, so he could turn into a good back-of-the-rotation guy in Milwaukee. The third player is an outfielder, but I thought the Brewers' outfield had already gotten crowded with Corey Hart joining Lee, Clark, and Jenkins. I'm guessing the Brewers aren't done dealing.
  4. How well the deal works for Texas depends on the health of Wilkerson and Sledge. Wilkerson was never right last year, but he could easily bounce back. Sledge basically lost all of last year, but he does have talent. I'm not sure I like Soriano in that park. This could backfire on the Nats.
  5. It's not that great of a loss if they keep Heilman. I'm OK with Padilla as well. Bell and Ring have the talent, but still haven't translated that into consistent performance. I wouldn't panic here; it's still early.
  6. We have all those infielders in AAA. I'm not sure I like the idea of one of them being blocked by this guy.
  7. Valadius wrote: Except Mazzone's now pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles. Forgot about that! So I guess his reclamation project is LaTroy Hawkins. We'll see if Kolb can remember how to pitch back in Milwaukee
  8. Clemens in pinstripes wouldn't surprise me. Then again, I wouldn't necessarily put it beyond Minaya to bring Clemens here, regardless or whether or not we like the guy. The Astros basically had no choice on this one. You couldn't even tell if Clemens means it if he were to say he's retiring, and the Astros can't plan their season around a major player who may or may not re-sign. They'll have enough trouble figuring out Bagwell's future.
  9. They must think Mirabelli can start. I wonder if that means the Red Sox plan on keeping Shoppach after all. The Padres are making room for Josh Barfield at second, and I'm guessing will give Ben Jonson a shot in left while putting Klesko back at first. As for Loretta, he's still a solid defender and OBP guy, but his power just vanished last year. He could bounce back or nosedive. Speaking of the Padres, they just brought back Trevor for two years and $13.5M. I don't think he's as good now as he was in his prime, but given the market for relievers that's still a bargain. Regarding the Braves deal: Villareal had a fantastic season in 03, but I'm not sure whose brilliant idea it was to ask a 21-year-old rookie reliever for 98 innings. While he hasn't been right since, he only just turned 24 and wouldn't be Mazzone's first successful reclamation project.
  10. Mitre hasn't inspired any confidence at this level, Nolasco was the Cubs' #7 prospect, and Pinto didn't crack the top 10. The Cubs got off pretty easy, and pesumably the Yankees really didn't try to beat that offer. The danger with somebody like Pierre is that his whole game revolves around speed, and it's only a matter of time before he loses a step. Still, it does not look like the Cubs risked a whole lot. Loria doesn't really think anybody will pay to go see his team next year, does he?
  11. I guess the spending money is back in baseball. (Well, everywhere except Florida.) It will take more than Burnett and Ryan to make the Jays competitive, and these deals will probably look worse in 2010 than they do now, so Ricciardi can't afford to rest on his laurels. Stay tuned.
  12. Casey can't be too overrated if the best the Reds can do is Dave Williams. Those 20 HR in 139 IP ought to have been a concern, especially since those 139 IP came over 25 starts (barely 5 IP/game) and the last homer-prone lefty starter they brought in worked out so poorly. Casey has some solid road splits -- .840 OPS last year, .901 from 02 to 04 -- so he could thrive in Pittsburgh. And the Pirates have enough young pitching to absorb the loss. I'd give a big advantage to Pitt on this one.
  13. Good question. I think Kline has more upside than Hawkins at this point, and the Mets remain thin beyond Wagner from the lefty side. I don't think having a lefty for a closer mitigates the need for good lefty setup people. I guess, since there really aren't that many options out there, that we have to hope Ring or Hamulack steps up. There was another guy we just got, but he didn't look very promising.
  14. Jason Isringhausen for Billy Taylor. Melvin Mora for Mike Bordick. And Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano has already benefited the D-Rays more than the Mets; the only detail remaining is how much more. The verdict is still out on whether not waiting for two months on Benson was worth parting with Huber, although it doesn't look like the Bucs have anything to show for that exchange. On the other hand, Burnitz for Victor Diaz and Alomar for Royce Ring still could work significantly in our favor, and certainly didn't hurt the Mets or benefit the Dodgers or White Sox in the short term.
  15. Very quietly a great player. It took the Mets six years to find a worthy replacement at his position. The thing that amazes me the most about Olerud was how somebody that tall could draw so many walks with Piazza in his prime hitting behind him.
  16. Where have the Jays been hiding all this money? I wouldn't have thought that averaging 2,000 more people a game than the Marlins could make so much difference.
  17. I'd be shocked if the Phillies offer us Abreu, but I'd certainly ask about him.
  18. Don't be surprised if Estrada changes locales this week. The key to whether this was a good deal or not depends on three things: 1. Who's the other prospect 2. Are the Marlins eating some money 3. How much more money will Molina and Hernandez get LoDuca is not terrible but not great, either. It may ultimately boil down to how much money you think a prospect is worth. What is the rule on losing draft picks when obtaining free agents?
  19. We bought out the last year of Mo's contract last season. In that sense we're no longer still paying him, although we did defer some of his money.
  20. We're still below last year. Piazza was ~$16M, the Cameron trade saved us ~$6M, we had $6M in buyouts ($2M apiece to Leiter, Vaughn, and Hidalgo), $4.5M from Roger Cedeno's contract, $4.5M saved on Trachsel's contract, ~$2M from Heredia's buyout plus the $1M we're not paying the Yankees for Stanton, plus ~$9M saved by buying out Mintky, Ishii, and Looper. And I'm probably missing a few things, too. Don't assume we're done dealing.
  21. Pujols is signed through 2010 (his 10th season), with an option for 2011. The annual price tag from 2008 on is $16M. Barring an injury, it's a bargain for the Cardinals. Wright will be arbitration eligible after 07, and Reyes after this year. They will stop being cheap, and Beltran's contract is backloaded. The Mets still have plenty of money to spend this year, but Minaya had also better plan ahead.
  22. I'd love to know what the people who criticized the Dodgers for overspending last year think of this one. And where will he play? Don't they have Izturis and Kent in the middle of the infield? Christ, this is more per year than Konerko or Wagner. I don't get this one at all.
  23. Vazquez did have a great 03 season (231 IP, 3.24 ERA, 241 K), but it looks like the back-to-back seasons of 230+ IP in 02 and 03 took a toll. His K/BB ratio recovered last year, but he still got hit hard. I don't really know what to expect from him at this point, which would limit what I'd be willing to deal.
  24. Wow, they really don't like our pitchers. Basically, all the starters get significantly worse. I'd take that OPS from Lambin if he fills Marlon Anderson's spot on the roster.
  25. Hate Rumours? Name me a better Fleetwood Mac album.
