  1. Off the subject, but I'm pretty sure I've met the Vromans too. My brother-in-law played for Staples when they went to the state final back in '97. All the kids' parents from that team still get together.
  2. Hell, tie game with 2 outs and Knight running on contact, he might have kept on barreling toward home even if Buckner had come up with the ball. Buckner would have had to decide whether to beat the speedy runner to first, or gather himself for an accurate toss home. Lots of pressure there.
  3. I hope he does, so I can see Mookie beat him to the bag anyway.

    THREE!!

  5. I broke down and paid full retail for this set last night, and I couldn't be happier. I watched a good portion of the NLCS Game 6 last night, and it was a lot better than the first time seeing it... on a 13" TV with the rabbit ears, in the dining room, while my mom taught piano lessons in the living room. It's also weird how little memories I have of the actual games... despite watching almost every minute back then. I coulda sworn Hatcher's game-tying homer was to right field... hopefully that doesn't mean that every other memory I have of my entire life is slightly wrong. The name Kevin Bass has always stuck with me for some reason... watching the game last night cemented it. He made two horrible throws to the plate allowing 2 Mets runs, as well as striking out to end the series. This morning on the train I watched the first 4 innings of WS Game 1. My plan is to plow all the way through the whole series from start to finish... I can only hope I have the stamina for it, already knowing the outcome.
  6. I'll also pay extra if I can have it today, as opposed to next week.
  7. Yeah, I figured it was gonna be more expensive there... just not THAT much more. I'll generally spend a little extra if I can avoid paying for shipping. I'm hoping the Virgin Megastore price is the same as the Amazon price.
  8. They wanted 90 bucks for it at Borders.
  9. I'm hyperventilating over here. Holy crap!
  10. I think any player with both power and speed needs to keep the threat of a bunt fresh in the oppositions minds, whether he ever bunts or not.
  11. I could swear that Tommy Lasorda has been saying the same thing forever. Now we've got data to back him up... as it relates to the Mets, anyway.
  12. A lot of the cards in the book are from the '40s and '50s. They go into a little detail about the later cards but it's mostly full of the older stuff. I love the old cards with rock / paper / scissors symbols on the backs.
  13. Stumbled across this book while I had some time to kill the other day. Very cool. "With talented young Japanese players signing to the American Majors, interest in Japanese baseball is at an all-time high. Sayonara Home Run! introduces curious fans to Japan's national pastime through the lens of the country's playfully beautiful baseball cards."
  14. "adds error into the result" Well, when discussing Jeter, you need to.
  15. The 1971 Topps Nolan Ryan is one of my favorite cards ever... although I didn't acquire it until a few years ago.
  16. Tampa Bay Famous Original Rays?
  17. Career errors? My calculations ended up with 302 total. It's probably elevated more than usual not only because everyone was old, but Thomas had played 3B quite a bit during his career.
  18. I build forts out of the plastic slabs. They're a lot more structurally sound than the cardboard forts. Waterproof, too.
  19. I sent in a couple batches of cards (44 cards, to be exact) to get graded a few years ago. I used Sportscard Guaranty (SCG). I was impressed with their service and their 100-point grading scale, but disappointed in some of the grades my cards were given. Thing is, it's easy to look at a card and convince yourself it's better than it really is, unless you start inspecting them under magnification and all that jazz. Once it's sealed in plastic with that big number stamped on it, there's no going back. Seawolf - I bet you could get late '80s / early '90s sets for next to nothing on Ebay, no problem.
  20. Smithers, are they saying "Boo", or "Boone"?
  21. Keith Jackson... wow. A great teacher to have. "You will never please everyone and you can't take it personally when rejected or let it go to your head when praised." Sound advice for any profession, as well as life in general... Thanks, Mr. Z, a real pleasure having you here.
  22. I know, I know. This thread had me real excited when Spaceman started it... then I realized I don't have the time I'd like to spend on it. I'll get to it eventually...
  23. Those are great, Spaceman.
