  1. Watching this movie every year around the Fourth Of July is kinda' traditional, sort of liek watching the Ten Commandments every Passover.I like it, but when I watch it, several things come to mind that raise some questions. They include:1) The world was saved by the combined efforts of a Black man and a Jewish man. Political Statement, social commentary, the best actors available who fit those roles, or the producers were having fun?2) The world was saved by use of an Apple PC. Product placement, or a metaphor for Independent studios accomplishing something the bigger Hollywood establishment (IBM. Dell) couldn't?3) That the F-18 fighter could beat any aircraft in ait-to-air combat, muchless the attack craft produced by an alien civilization that had ravaged the universe.. I've been an aerophile for almost 50 years, and know that piece of shit wasn't even the best in a US arsenal at the time the movie was made.4) That a US President who said he had been trained as a pilot could actually fly a fighter plane.5) That the kid actress who played the President's daughter could actually get a role in a major motion picture. She may have been the worst kid actress in the history of modern film. Was she the daughter of one of the Producers. There are probably others, but time does not permit.Anything else strike you as strange about that movie?Later
  2. Jacobs now has 17 homers. When are they going to promote him to AAA?Later
  3. I remember when there used to be something called the Bernstein Report available on the WEB. The writer used to rank the Mets minor leaguers and had interesting comments about each of them.He was very imporessed with Nye when he was at A ball. The comment I remember was that Nye had "one of the quickest bats" he had ever seen.I think he deserves at least a cuppa' at the major league level as payment for toiling in the minors for many years. Who knows? He could be the next Matt Franco - a serviceable major league corner infoeld sub for a few years.Later
  4. ]Glavine or Ishii probably won't net us muchIt depends on how good your minor league scoutring/ player evaluation is.A good example was when "Veteran", "Steady" Doyle Alexander, needed for the stretch run, was traded by Atlanta to Detroit for a kid pitcher named John Smoltz. You never know. LaterEdit: typos

You think anyone will notice?I still can't get it out of my head* that Carlos was the Zambrano they (Wilpon and Peterson) thought they were trading for in the Kasmir deal.Later*= Hoping that all is well with Kiley Minogue and she is on her way to good health.
  6. The Connecticut Post has a daily circulation of 249,000.It isn't The Times, but not too shabby.Later
  7. Ding! Ding!We have a winner.Doc, that may have been the best one-liner yet on the new board.Later
  8. And if they want him back, in exchange for a manager who will give younger players and pitchers a chance, please let me know where I can drop him off.Later
  9. When Offerman was brought up to the Mets, I reluctantly thought it was all right to add him as a pinch hitter. But I also though that I hoped he would never have to play a defensive position for the club.Unfortunately for the Mets, I was right.Later
  10. Nice. Its nice to know that he has a sense of history of the game those who came before.Isn't Traschell the team wine maven? I wonder what he'll say about Willie's selections when he returns to the team?Later
  11. My trip to Fenway was a few years ago, and had a different perception.Of course there are some possible reasons:They were playing the Yankees.I was sitting in the bleachers. The curse had not been broken, so the fans were feeling the "pressure".They still served beer throughout the entire game (not the current seventh inning cutoff).I was there with about 40 Sox Fans from my company.Later

  13. I can just hear the sports talk callers on the radio now:"Beltran only steals bases when Pedro starts".Later
  14. We have a happy update here. Last night your bouncing baby boy had TWO dingers and four RBI, Doc.Mazel tov!Later
  15. Edgy, how can we improve on perfection?Seems like you got 'em all.Personally, I would have moved your number 3 to the top spot. While all items on your list have been frustrating, I believe that more and timelier production out of first base would have helped the team to overcome some of the other problems you listed. 17. Speaking of in the car, I was driving home today and a Yankee fan called in to one of the shows (forget whether it was WFAN or ESPN) and said "If the Mets want Sheffield, they would have to include either Reyes or Wright with Cameron". He may have said both. And he was SERIOUS. I almost drove off the road.Incidentally, both Met and Yankee fans think this isn't a good deal for their team. That makes me think it still may happen.Later

  21. Since its the NY Post, I immediately cut and pasted that link to the bottom of my birdcage before I read it.Just curious, was it written by the Yankee or the Met beat reporter?Later
  22. CF, that's what I meant by "he'll jump off the operating table" line.My KTE had it all:Performance of the two teams since they last met, what happened the last time they met, injury report, possible starting pitchers, past team history, who's hot against the Mets, etc.The format may have been , er, "creative", but the content was there for the KTE purists. I met my obligation.Later
  23. ="Edgy DC"] This wasn't directed at you either, but at MFS62, who was responding to a question that had long been cleared up. Nonetheless, I shouldn't use the imperative tense. Very sorry.I don't have any boys. When I got to this thread, many of the links and things dealing with the original story had been deleted or modified. So I was just responding that I didn't think this was a funny topic. Do you think Nazis were funny? Then maybe you didn't grow up in a neighborhood where people had numbers tattooed on their arms. Please forgive me in that I don't rush to read everything as soon as its posted here and respond immediately. I can only read what is available at the point in time I'm reading it.There is at times copious quantities of caca posted on this board. Why do you choose to single out my meager two or three line post to make a point about posting less?Darwin was right.Later

  25. Putting on my best Howard Beale voice: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002075/ I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's depressing. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Terrorism is running wild around the world and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster (like Willets Point) and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I got assigned to write another KTE about the Phillies. I said I didnt want to, but my name showed up again next to this series on the assignment list. The World sucks, it is true. But all I wanted to be was left alone. And now THIS. Yes, I know, the Mets took two of three from the Phillies last week. Then they took two of three from the Yankees while the Phillies were getting swept by the Red Sox. And I should derive some solace from that. But we had to depend on Kaz Ishii to win a game in order to win the series. And we had to count on Hernandez to strike out Met-killer Pat Burrell to protect Kaz win. And their quiet Met tormentor Rheal Cormier didnt vulture a win. Are those things going to happen again real soon? You might as well wait for the next sighting of Haleys Comet. I should have been glad that the series is over and I wouldnt have to deal with the team that has been murder on the Mets since the days of Roy Sievers, Ray Culp and Larry Jackson. And Jimmy Rollins keeps getting key hits against the Mets like Bobby Wine used to. And now a suddenly reheated Jim Thome is coming to Shea, where the prevailing left-to-right wind can only help a lefty power hitter. Considering the way the Phillies have mal-treated the Mets over the years, I wouldnt be surprised if pitcher Randy Wolf jumps off the operating table where he is having reconstructive arm surgery and rushes to the mound and throws a shutout. And to add insult to (a weird on deck) injury, Mientkiewicz is out and Jose Offerman has been called up. And who do we have to depend on to pull us out of our post Yankee loss funk? Its inconsistent Victor Zambrano (3-6, 3.97), who will be going up against either Robinson Tejada (1-0, 2.02) or Corey Lidle (6-6, 4.12). Thats who. And after that, it will be John Lieber (8-7, 4.95) against Kaz Ishii (2-6 5.25) and Vicente Padilla (3-7, 6.83 against Pedro Martinez (8-2, 2.72). And the only thing worse is that I have been assigned to write another KTE about that team.Im mad. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman, or Edgy, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the terrorism and the crime in the street and forcing CPF-ers to do something they dont want to do. All I know is that first you've got to get mad. [shouting] You've got to say, '62s a HUMAN BEING, dammit! His life has VALUE!' So does my time. And yours does, too. Should it be wasted doing something you dont want to do? I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, [shouting] 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis and the mandated KTE assignments. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: [screaming at the top of his lungs] "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
