Do the Mets need another starting pitcher? - maybe Will the Mets get another starting pitcher? - maybe Do I want the Mets to get Barry Zito - definitely not!! I watched the Yankee game last night. He has lost any "stuff" he may have had. His fastball topped out at 83 MPH!! His curve was a slow as 69 MPH Most of his pitches were in the 70's. That's senior beer league stuff. He made Jamie Moyer look like Sandy Koufax. He looked like he's maybe worth Endy Chavez in a trade. Certainly nothing more. Later

Because this is Mets baseball related, I put it here instead of the self-promotion page. I just got a call from a writer at the local paper (Danbury News-Times). He knows I'm a Mets fan, and wanted to hear the frustration of a Mets fan whose cable outlet doesn't carry the games. I hope my comments make the paper. I'll let you know/ provide a link if they do. I had never heard of Jobe's Law before, but it makes a lot of sense. I guess it takes into his twenties before all the muscles are mature enough to support throwing a lot of innings. Then I remembered a rookie named Stachell Paige. According to that theory, the "kid" couuld have thrown 470 innings. They wasted his talents. Later

First Met I remember being older than me: Gil Hodges (although I would have thought Duke Snider was older, Clem Labine, too.) And First Met who I remember being younger than me was Ed Kranepool. EDIT: Last Met older than me? I dunno. There reaches a point when you don't want to look at ages any more. Later

I wasn't too fond of Connie Francis, either. (I believe she started out playing the accordion as Concheta Ann Franconera on one of the old amateur talent shows.) But "Weird Al " is an entirely different story. Later

From the Baseball Prospectus transaction analysis page on the Mets for today... they go into Diaz versus Nady: " Xavier Nady has gone stone cold, and not in that happy anti-hero pro wrestling sort of way, but more along the lines of the godawful laugh-out-loud bad Brian Bosworth vehicle, Stone Cold. It would actually be a pretty happy result if Victor Diaz won the job away from Xavier Nady anyway: Diaz would get 400-500 plate appearances, Nady could be freed up for spot duty in the infield corners, spot starts against lefties, and pinch-hitting, and Chavez could stick to pinch-running and defensive substitution work. I don't mean to put Nady down, but Diaz could end up being the sort of hitter who helps the Mets as a regular for the next five years, and that should be cultivated. If Willie Randolph is flexible enough to do all of that this year, we should all be impressed. " Later
