We apparently got the wrong Japanese second baseman. That guy on the White Sox can PLAY. My friend the Chisox fan tells me that he was really their MVP last year. he did all the smart "little things" to help them win, like Fonzie for the Mets in his prime. (But without the power numbers) Later
  2. Its more than an "ouchie" for Martinez. I read that he hurt his leg(knee?) and may be out for the rest of the year. Later
  3. Boston HAVEN"T won....? Someone's been spending too much time in the soccer threads? Later
  4. He's back with the team, but asked Willie not to pitch him yesterday. He said he might be able to try pitching again in the Boston series. (insert sigh of relief emoticon here) Later
  5. Elster88 wrote: From August 29th to October 1 the Mets have exactly 1 day off. IIRC that violates the Labor Agreement. I thought there has to be a break every 20 or so days. Or was that negotiated out of the last agreement? Later
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Once we break for the ASG, we have just 3 games over the next 8 days - Ugh! (Mon thru Mon) OFF - OFF - OFF - OFF - Cubs - Cubs - Cubs - OFF Good for rotation ... bad for fans. Also bad for Traschel. I've read several times that he is a slave to routine. He likes pitching in a five man rotation. If that gets messed up (either too many or too few days between starts) he doesn't pitch as well. Later
  7. From today's NYDaily News: Members of "Mets Management" are considering initially using Pelfrey in relief if they bring him up to the majors. IIRC, every year, the Mets try some of their starters as relievers in the minors in preparation for callup should they be needed. Wouldn't this be standard practice, or have they gone away from doing that? Anyone know for sure? Later
  8. They did that "ships that pass in the night" thing a lot better in Ladyhawke. Later
  9. What does EEE stand for - emergency enemy evaluation? Something else? Later
  10. Reyes 3 Beltran 2.5 Bradford 1.5 Heilman 1 Wagner 1 Valentin 1 Later
  11. Those seven strikeouts show the arm is sound (knocking wood). Now its just a matter of regaining command. Later
  12. I would have given Marrero a shot behind the dish. They're going to have to see what he can do there at some point before they have to make a cut down decision when Cliff returns. If Eli can do the job there (and their's no reason to think he still can't) then I would send Castro down. It seems last year's magic is gone. Later
  13. But, as FK suggested, I didn't use that to extrapolate it into either absolutes of "he can't" or "he won't". Well, maybe just a tinge of "he hasn't so far" and untl he reverses this trend, I don't have much confidence he will be able to do it in the future. I hope I'm wrong and I left the door open for him to prove me wrong. But the guy got struck out by a journeyman pitcher on an 86 mph fastball over the middle of the plate and just below the belt. Good hitters kill that pitch. Mediocre hitters hit it somewhere. Bad hitters get a piece of it and maybe fould it off or even get a bloop hit. He missed it by four inches (swung above it)and I couldn't estimate how many MPH in bat speed from the camera angle. Right now I'd just rather have someone else up in crucial situations. Later
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: That he's been lousy hitting w/runners on and such isn't in question. No matter what the sample size it's all there in black and white. The mistake would be in thinking that the fact that he hasn't is evidence that he can't and therefore proof that he won't in the future. I never claimed any such thing. All I did was mention the numbers and performance to date. I don't like to do projections or predictions. There's no future in in. Later Edit: spelling cleanup
  15. I don't know if this belongs here because it has no byline. And I'm not sure if it goes in the quotes of 2006 thread, either, but:]from rotoworld: Brett Myers worked five innings and allowed three runs Saturday in a no-decision versus the Red Sox. Myers failed in his attempt to become just the third pitcher ever to beat the Yankees, the Red Sox and his wife in the same week. Bad writing. They didn't tell us who the other two were.LOL!Later
  16. Elster88 wrote: ="MFS62"]the sample size is large enough that random variance alone can't really explain these results I disagree. Fair enough. Then forget the numbers. Watch him play. He gags. Big time. He makes A-Rod look like the player Derek Jeter's fans think Jeter is. Later
  17. Oliver 3 Reyes 3 Delgado 2 Wright 1 Later
  18. I know "clutch" hitting might not actually exist, but Nady's splits are mind-boggling pretty much his numbers decline quite steadily as the importance of the ab increases. the sample size is large enough that random variance alone can't really explain these results Nobody on: .316 Runners on: .202 RISP: .170 runners on w/2 out: .150 RISP w/2 out: .077 bases loaded: .000 I don't think that counts today either and he was 2-3 with nobody on and 0-1 with runners on, RISP, runners on w/2 out, RISP w/2 out and bases loaded. Later
  19. Half full view: I'd rather the streak end this way - giving up a lot of runs when Halliday is on the mound. Let them use up all those runs today. Later
  20. EEE? Best as I can figure, that means "Emergency Enemy Evaluation". Close? Great job on short notice. Later
  21. Glavine 4 Wright 3 Nady 1 LoDuca 1 Milledge .5 Bradford .25 Feliciano .25 Later
  22. Either Steve was using that post as a thread starter where folks could add interesting links to pages of other teams, or he forgot to include his link. Later
  23. Just remembered - didn't someone say that they had created a special K-Boom for Lastings? Maybe they'll add it to this thread tomorrow. Later
  24. It looked like he was holding his arm/elbow, but Yahoo sports is saying its the shoulder. Neither good. Mr. Owens to the lobby phone. Later
  25. Oh, we thought it happened during yesterday's game. Phew! Later
