I usually don't get into the rankings, even though I saw every Mets team play. But here are some things about that 1963 season that you might find interesting:The Mets search for a regular third baseman throughout their history has been oft mentioned. The thread above mentions Jim Hickman, and he is rated highly. But does anyone remember that Hickman played the second most games at third for the Mets that year? He played 59 games there, and had a fielding pct of .914 (not good).Charlie Neal, who most think of as a second baseman, played 66 games at third in 1963, and had a .963 fielding pct. To put that into perspective, a player remembered as one of the best fielding third baseman ever, the Yankees' Cletis Boyer, had a .954 fielding percentage that same year.Later

The numbers are similar, but there must be other pitchers who had similar stats in their rookie years and didn't become a David Cone. Also, Cone was a year younger then Maine in his rookie year. But, we're Mets fans. We can hope, can't we? Later

Why do I have this feeling that Steve Traschell may be on the team next year? Looking at some of the price VS performance contracts recently given out, he could be as good as any of the non-top tier pitchers available. Later

I have this feeling (although I'm hoping I'm wrong) that Paul O'Neill will have longer staying power than "one and done". The voters will look at his over .300 Yankee career BA and forget those 3,500 or so NL at bats when he hit around .265. After all, he WAS a Yankee. I remember when Bill Veeck signed a teenager named Harold Baines, he dubbed him "Hall of Fame" Baines. He will be the first real test case of how much import the voters place on his being mainly a DH for his career. If he had played the field as a regular, his numbers were good enough to get him more than just a few votes. Later

I've noticed that when the "stuff" of a pitcher is written about in scouting reports, the speed of the two-seam and four seam fastballs are different by as much as 3-4 mph. That seems strange. Both pitches are thrown with the same arm speed/ angular momentum and the mass of the baseball is a constant. The only thing different is the grip. So why the difference in speeds? Is it because the different grips "present" different seams to the air, producing variances in resistance? Are there any engineers or physicists out there who can shed some scientific light on this? or Does anyone have Jay Hook's contact information? Later
