Peavy is guaranteed $52M over the next 3 seasons and is now an established injury risk who'll fail to reach 175 IP for the second straight year. I'm perfectly OK with passing on him. I wouldn't have minded V-Mart, though. metirish Jul 31 2009 05:51 PM I just don't get the Minaya bashing today , if he had traded for Francouer today would the people who are unhappy be happy with that? Could you blame the guy if he did that , make a splash trade for the sake of it? , I'd love to have a Halladay or a Peavey but would have preferred V Martinez. At what cost though would they have come for? I'm not upset that we didn't get middle of the road players and never expected top tier players so i am not disappointed. Injuries have been the story of this season. All teams get hit with injuries and must work to overcome them, the Mets have unfortunately been with a rash of long term injuries to a multitiude of their key players. 5. Here's the story: Jackhammers Fire Wally Backman Submitted by smallballusa on Thu, 07/30/2009 - 18:08 JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers have announced that Wally Backman has been relieved of his duties as field manager of the team effective immediately. Backman will be replaced by former Joliet hitting coach Ira Smith, who will serve as the teams interim manager for the remainder of the 2009 season. The fans in Joliet deserve a winner, said Backman. Im disappointed that we could not get the job done. Backman departs with the JackHammers in sixth place in the Northern League with a 24-42 record. Smith comes back to Joliet after serving as Hal Laniers hitting coach during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He began his coaching career with the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2004 as their bench coach and moved to the role of hitting coach in 2005 before spending two years with the JackHammers. He began a 14-year playing career when he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1990 draft. Reaching AAA in the Padres and Tigers organizations, Smith first played in the Northern League in 1999 with Duluth-Superior. He logged five seasons in the Northern League (Sioux City, 2000-2001; Winnipeg, 2002; and Sioux City-Lincoln, 2003) before starting his coaching career in 2004. Smith will join the team on Friday when the JackHammers begin a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Silver Cross Field. We want to thank Wally for all that he has done and all the hard work he has put in, said JackHammers Executive Vice President/General Manager Kelly Sufka. He has done everything weve asked him to do except for in the Win-Loss Column. Nobody is more disappointed with the teams record than Wally. A change needed to be made for our fans sake and this is the change that we believe needed to happen. The JackHammers are home this weekend to start a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beginning on Friday, July 31 at 7:05 p.m. Come out to the ballpark for fireworks sponsored by Aramark after the game! 6. After tonight's game, an ESPN "expert" was saying that Victor Martinez would be an excellent fit for the Mets. (Didn't catch the name, but it may have been Andrew Marchand). Damn. metirish Jul 30 2009 11:09 AM Pirates president Coonelly explains fire sale Posted by: Jon Heyman Pirates president Frank Coonelly, who along with GM Neal Huntington may have the thickest skin in baseball, explained their fire sale in an interview with SI.com. "We feel very good about it. It's tough for the fans, and we understand why. It's tough to see players who were popular and did good things go. But we were not a winning baseball team with the players we had,'' Coonelly said. "Given the ages and service time of those players, if we attempted to patchwork things, we would have been in a very poor position. We would have had Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Jack Wilson and potentially Freddy Sanchez (he has a vesting option) ready to leave as free agents and get nothing in return. "The reaction of some is negative. But I think most of the fans understand what we're doing and why we're doing it ... I think they understand why these moves are necessary for us to (facilitate) winning Pirates baseball.'' Coonelly won't quite say they are done dealing. Though after trading their longtime double-play combination of Wilson and Sanchez Wednesday following deals of Adam LaRoche and Nate McLouth, Coonelly did say, "We are very close to getting done.'' Reliever John Grabow has been coveted by several teams looking for left-handed bullpen help. So Coonelly can't guarantee the sale is complete. The Pirates received infielder Ronny Cedeno, minor-league hitter Jeff Clement and three Class-A pitching prospects in exchange for Wilson and pitcher Ian Snell, and got well-regarded pitching prospect Tim Alderson back from the Giants for Sanchez. While Giants fans were upset over the loss of Alderson, Coonelly wasn't gloating. Asked whether he thinks Giants fans are right that Alderson will be a star, Coonelly said, "Let's hope so. There's a long list of great prospects who never panned out, and just as long a list of prospects who weren't that highly thought of who became stars. We certainly like Tim.'' Clement, a former No. 3 overall pick, was once considered a big-time prospect. But there are questions now whether he can catch. He'll start as a first baseman in the Pirates organization Vic Sage Jul 30 2009 11:12 AM Doumit is 28, and is a decent defensive catcher with a 280/20 hr bat. The 20-year-old Weems was batting .260 with a homer and 14 RBIs in 55 games with Class-A Charleston this season. He was picked in the sixth round of the 2007 draft. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 31 2009 03:11 PM ="Edgy DC"]="bmfc1"]Edgy's happy but I'm not. Omar confirms my opinion that he is an awful in-season GM. He can wine, dine, schmooze, and attract big name FAs but for the second year in a row, he failed to make a deadline deal to help the team. Awful GMs make deals that hurt teams. "You've gotta know when to hold." --- K. Rogers Hear, hear. I'm in Edge's corner on this. They moved the Peavy? Those crazy bastards! (A LOT of good young arms on the Pods now.) Nymr83 Jul 31 2009 03:22 PM Peavy was a good young arm, and under contract a few more years, I don't know who they got yet but its hard to believe its worth it for a guy you're not about to lose. Farmer Ted Jul 31 2009 03:55 PM Which of the three...Washburn, Peavy, or Halladay...will be with the Mets next year? MFS62 Jul 31 2009 04:13 PM Omar's like the ugly girl - all alone by the telephone - waiting for a call inviting her to the dance. Later smg58 Jul 31 2009 05:01 PM Minaya could very easily have been told not to take on more payroll for this season, so I wouldn't point the finger too quickly. I actually think the fact that Halladay is still a Jay is a good thing -- assuming you can wait until the offseason to obtain him. I read in one of the rags the other day.....Madden I think it was proclaiming that Minaya NEEDED to get Halladay to change the subject around the team. MFS62 Jul 31 2009 06:14 PM Not bashing. Just saying. Add me to the group who didn't want to see a deal that drained the farm of key prospects. As Edgy said, no news = good news. Later seawolf17 Jul 31 2009 06:19 PM I actually would have liked to see them move some guys, like Livan or Schneider, even if just for middling prospects. But I'm okay with inaction too. Let's get healthy, fellas! This team is too many players away from contending right now, and I just didn't want him to do any more damage.... As FK said, trading Sullivan, Reed, plus Berroa and Cancel for Reyes, Beltran & Delgado sometime in the next few weeks would be the best trade possible... metirish Aug 01 2009 07:52 AM Minaya ] As a general manager, Ive been six games out before, and its kind of hard to go out and make a trade, Minaya said. And you guys know our situation. The situation is not one player. Our situation is a couple players. In the clubhouse, no one seemed concerned that he might be traded or, for that matter, that anyone else would be. Only a few players lounged on couches watching updates on the MLB Network, as many more bolted outside to fly a remote-controlled helicopter Wright ] I dont think the reason for our record being what it is is that we needed one more piece, David Wright said. Its that we played poorly at times and were pretty banged up. Were not one piece away thats going to put us over the top at the trade deadline. Its not like were not going to get more than that when we get these guys healthy. Rockin' Doc Aug 01 2009 09:04 AM No one player was going to suddenly put this team over the top. Injuries have been the story of this season. All teams get hit with injuries and must work to overcome them, the Mets have unfortunately been with a rash of long term injuries to a multitiude of their key players. I'm more disappointed at the lost opportunity to see how good this team could have been this season had they not been decimated with injuries, than I am over the absence of any desperate trades in hopes of miraculously putting this team into contention. Vince Coleman Firecracker Aug 01 2009 10:41 AM I'm with Seawolf. Would have liked to see Omar sell off a few players. Valadius Aug 01 2009 11:25 AM I would have liked to see another lefty for the bullpen, at least. Edgy DC Aug 01 2009 11:51 AM We have Misch, and we're getting Wagner, and I'm uncertain anybody else will have made a difference worth giving somebody up for, except that maybe Manuel may trust an import more than he does Misch. Valadius Aug 01 2009 12:33 PM Honestly, I don't think Misch knows how to get Jerry to trust him enough to get him in a meaningful game. Edgy DC Aug 01 2009 01:44 PM And if our issue is that it takes a trade for Manuel to give somebody a chance who may or may not be better than a pitcher he's got rotting in the back of the bullpen, its' not a trade we should be clamoring for. metirish Aug 01 2009 04:33 PM ="Valadius":oqm0lk9w]Honestly, I don't think Misch knows how to get Jerry to trust him enough to get him in a meaningful game.[/quote:oqm0lk9w] What is this " Days of our Lives"? 17. http://www.baseballamerica.com...ospects/?p=5871 Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores won admirers last season for his impressive showing in the Rookie-level Appalachian League, in which he participated as a 16-year-old. A year older and wiser, the young Venezuelan hasnt received quite the same fanfare this season as he competes in the low Class A South Atlantic League. Lets view them side by side: WILMER FLORES, SS, METS YR TEAM LGE LVL PA AVG OBP SLG HR 2B BB SO CT% ISO BB/K 08 Kingsport Appy R 265 .310 .352 .490 8 12 12 28 88.6 .163 .36 09 Savannah SAL LoA 375 .280 .317 .360 3 15 15 44 87.3 .075 .34 Flores, 17, has maintained his lofty contact rate and his mediocre walk-to-strikeout ratio even as hes moved up a grade. His average and power production, though, have trailed off significantly as he grinds through his first full season of pro ball. He signed with the Mets for the ninth-highest bonus, $700,000, of the 07 international signing period. A scout for an AL club took note of those hitting qualities while seeing Flores in action this season. "Flores grew on me. He can hit," the scout said. "I dont know how much power hes going to haveand hes a legit 25 runner with well below-average athleticismbut he has a knack for putting the barrel on the ball. And he shows plate discipline and pitch recognition at a young age. "His hands are really good and they allow him to manipulate the barrel and adjust to pitches in all parts of the zone. They help his defense, too. But hes not a good athlete and he cant run at all." Viewers of the Futures Game already have some familiarity with Flores lack of footspeed. It seemed to take him days to run out an infield grounder during that prospect showcase, and he again showed well below-average speed in Sundays Sand Gnats game at Greensboro, a contest attended by a number of BA staffers. Flores went 1-for-4 with a double, but twice he grounded out sharply to third, the second time as part of a game-ending double play. In each at-bat, Flores worked the count to his favor, and of the 15 pitches he saw in four at-bats, he swung and missed only once, at an 86 mph fastball on the inner half. He fouled off one other pitch, but in every instance he was working ahead of the pitcher2-1, 3-1, 1-0 and 2-1. In the first inning, Flores lined a 89 mph fastball, middle-in, from righthander Tom Koehler over the center fielders head for a double. The defense had been playing him slightly to pull. As Flores fills out his lanky 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame, scouts will be looking for increased power production from the righthanded hitter. "I think learning when he gets his pitch to really attack it will help him (hit for more power)," the scout said. "But now, he just lays the barrel on the ball and throws it in the alley or in front of a outfielder for a single or double. I think as he gets more experience, hell learn to really attack it when he gets his pitch. "Hes a big leaguer, I think, but not a shortstop for sure. And the approach has to improve, and he has to develop a lot more power if hes going to be everyday on a corner." But Flores is a unique case. Not many prospects, not even those from Latin America, compete in full-season minor leagues at age 17-18. Later
  18. Something really must have happened to Snell. Once a pretty decent pitcher, he recently has allowed so many base runners, it sometimes looks like they've given him a second infield. If he isn't careful to moisturize, he could get stretch marks. Later
  19. A quick side note (maybe this belongs in the "In The Booth" thread): During the Mets post-game radio show tonight, Wayne Hagan said "Mark was relieved by ex-Houston Astro Octavio Dotel". Methinks Wayne needs to take some additional classes in his Met-ucation. Back to topic. Mark is a pitcher, in the finest sense of the word. When I saw the highlights of his perfect game, I don't recall seeing the radar gun top 87 MPH on any of his pitches. I agree with Doc, more pitchers should emulate him. Later

  23. I'm not sure that article really answers the question of Bernazard's role in "Player Development" Was he responsible for heading up the scouting organization? If so, it appears that the job he did was about what other organizations would have expected to do, maybe more. If not, if his title of VP of Minor League Operations only included managing the minor league club operations (the business side), then he can get no credit for recent drafts. Until we know his exact job responsibilities the article, though interesting and encouraging, may not be pertinent. Later
