  2. Here's an interesting quote from Jeff Wilpon, as reprinted in BA: "It was something that slipped through the cracks. We had a lot of things happening last year. We came in under budget [on the overall construction of Citi Field], so why not make it right?" Mets owner Jeff Wilpon on fixing up the team's bullpen for next year. (Marty Noble, MLB.com) Bullpen? Only? Or does he just answer direct questions? Later

  4. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9763 As if we didn't suspect the team that had the most. Later
  5. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/alfonzo_yearns_for_one_more_amazin_zr0WFGukgHOiw1F6rcjOwN He wants to do it as a player. I wouldn't mind him doing it as a coach. He always seemed to be able to to the right thing, at the right time, in the right way. Maybe he could make some of that rub off on some of the fundamentals-challenged members of the current team. Later
  6. I used to like the "Rookie Reports" issue each year. I'd always get my hopes up. For example, the one on Bud Harrelson said "Good power for a shortstop". Then, I saw him play. Then, I stopped buying Baseball Digest. But for a long time, it was the only place you could find semi-up-to-date rosters. Later

My speak. Uggla is only considered a second baseman because he wears a glove and stations himself about half way between first and second bases. Later
  8. G - there is one name in your post about 1971 that I had tried to push back into the inner recesses of my mind so that I would never remember it. You undid over 30 years of my efforts. During that time, I have not even uttered the person's name. I did not want to quote or copy your post. lest I inadvertently see it again. Well, at least I still have not thought of Mel Rooooooooooooooooooooooo - oooh shit. I just did it to myself. Later
  9. You know who must really be pissed that the world will end on December 12, 2012? Bobby Bonilla. He will have collected only two of his $1 million annual payments by then. IIRC, the payout starts in 2011. Later
  10. As announced by AP. St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols and New York Yankees infielder Mark Teixeira, the National and American League home run leaders, were among those chosen Thursday to receive Silver Slugger awards. The awards, instituted in 1980 to the best offensive player in each league at each position, are chosen by managers and coaches. American League winners were first baseman Teixeira, second baseman Aaron Hill of Toronto, shortstop Derek Jeter of New York, third baseman Evan Longoria of Tampa Bay, catcher Joe Mauer of Minnesota, designated hitter Adam Lind of Toronto, and outfielders Torii Hunter of Los Angeles, Ichiro Suzuki of Seattle and Jason Bay of Boston. In the National League, the winners were first baseman Pujols, second baseman Chase Utley of Philadelphia, shortstop Hanley Ramirez of Florida, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman of Washington, catcher Brian McCann of Atlanta, pitcher Carlos Zambrano of Chicago, and outfielders Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier of Los Angeles and Ryan Braun of Milwaukee. Longoria, Hunter, Bay, Hill, Lind, Zimmerman, Ethier and Kemp are first-time award winners. Pujols has won five Silver Sluggers, and Jeter and Utley have each claimed four apiece. The selections are based on a combination of offensive statistics, such as batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage of a player at each position. Managers and coaches are not permitted to vote for players on their teams. So, Kemp has a silver slogger and a gold glove. I wonder if he has steel balls, too. Later
  11. Shoppach was the darling of the Sons of Sam Horn for a while. He was their Johnny Blanchard. (My analogy) Lefty hitter, power, played behind an All-Star catcher. It was a festival of "Gee, if he only got a chance". Well he got his chance, and has shown some of that same power in the majors. I don't know about his defense, but IMO he's worth a shot. But we have to remember, Eric Mangini isn't making deals for the Indians, too. Later

  14. Answer: 2009 Post Season Awards. But since the AL Gold Glove awards have been announced (see the YLDB thread) we might as well use this thread to discuss them. Later
  15. That warmup story reminds me of a story I read about DiMaggio after he retired. When he came up he had a great arm. But toward the end of his career, his arm was shot. During the warmups before each game, he was still able to cut loose one strong throw. The opposing team would see it, and think his arm was OK, so they wouldn't challenge his arm during the game. Later
  16. We can add to the list all those d'bags who voted for Jeter to win the Golden Glove award. Anyone who watched him for more than 5 minutes (For Mets fans, that would have had to have been with a gun to their heads) knew that Jeter now has the range of a fire hydrant. Later
  17. After 22 games, Josh Thole is hitting .414 in the VWL. He hasn't struck out in his last 29 PA, and has only 5 Ks for the season. His .579 OBP leads the league by 57 points. Later
  18. Wow! I never collected them, barely read some of them. I guess those color spreads on the underwater pretzel throw semis from Provo, Utah never really interested me. But there are two I would like to have. The first was the issue before Super Bowl III when the SI football "expert" named Tex Maulle seriously predicted that Baltimore would beat the Jets by the score of 66-0. The second would be the issue in which they reported the results of the game (I'm not sure if they forced Maulle to write it). Later
  19. I have a feeling that because of the economy, we may see many head-scratching moves this winter, that don't, or barely, make baseball sense. Later
