  1. After all these years, they finally partnered Miller with an analyst who can analyze. Later
  2. I know, Irish. I was being a little sarcastic there. How could he know? Att: But if Flores never returns fully healthy, it will make Omar's exposing him to the draft not be a too terrible mark on Omar's legacy. Also interesting is the way Flores (or the writer) discussed his (mis)treatment by the Nats' medical team. That kind of stuff was big news when we were talking about the Mets last year. Looks like it can happen elsewere, too. Later
  3. Been there, done that, with a guy named Clint Hartung. He was a NY Giants prospect. They couldn't figure out if he would turn out to be a great pitcher or a great hitter. He was neither. Although, there was this guy named Babe Ruth ... Later
  4. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/nationalsjournal/2010/02/the_battered_bruised_and_repai.html Or was this just one of those things that happen? Later
  5. metirish wrote: Yes , just like last season emphasizing to the hitters to get on base more , they even had that drill that Jerry rigged for the players to hit 80 balls to the same part of the field , over and over...... I remember watching Alex Johnson take batting practice. He would hit a ball to left, then a ball to center, then a ball to right. Then he'd keep repeating that drill. IIRC, he led the league in batting that year. Later
  6. After I saw him play, I named a baseball malady "George Altman Syndrome". It describes a fairly young ballplayer who has had success elsewhere, comes to the Mets, has a really bad year, and never recovers his skills. Probably the most notable victim was Robbie Alomar. Later

  8. Tom Verducci said on WFAN that the Barajas signing will give his old team a sandwich draft pick. I thought that was only done if his new team signed him to a major league contract. Rod was signed to a minor league deal. Someone please shine the light on this. Later
  9. What may be even more important explaining roster moves in those days was the option rule. A player had three options/ recalls. Period. Not multiple moves within three option years. (like today) Most teams saved the recalls for September callups. A call up to replace a guy on the DL used up one of those moves. That said, unless really proven otherwise, I'd guess that the gaps in their usage were just that - periods of nonuse. Later
  10. Don't forget, with knuckleballer RA Dickey in camp, you may need as many catchers as you can get. Hey, the 1962 Mets had seven catchers during the regular season. Anyone want to do the comparisons? Later
  11. IIRC, Casey Stengel used to call Sammy "Solly". RIP Sammy. I'm sorry that's all I recall about you. Later
  12. I had heard that he has been working out at one of the Mets baseball academies (Dominican Republic?). Other teams are still interested in him, but this might indicate the Mets are the frontrunners. EDIT: Yep. Here we go. He's even wearing Mets "colors". http://metsfever.blogspot.com/2010/02/maya-training-photo-uni-looks-familiar.html Later
  13. I had read that a Latin-American pitcher for SF had been raised Jewish by his mom. (in the Bronx, BTW) So I sent him a Happy Jewish New Years card and included some best wishes in Spanish. Never got a reply. Later
  14. From fox sports .com: Ken Rosenthal Updated Feb 17, 2010 12:47 AM ET The Mets are making "a hard push" for free-agent catcher Rod Barajas and negotiating with him on a one-year deal, according to major-league sources. Barajas, 34, likely would get the bulk of playing time for the Mets, whose other catchers Henry Blanco, Omir Santos, Chris Coste and Josh Thole are either backups or unproven. Earlier this offseason, the Mets tried to land free-agent catcher Bengie Molina, who re-signed with the Giants, and passed on Yorvit Torrealba, who went to the Padres. Barajas batted .226 for the Blue Jays last season. His on-base percentage was only .258. But he hit 19 home runs in 429 at-bats, finished with 71 RBIs and threw out 29.3 percent of his attempted base stealers, second best in the American League. The Rangers and Mariners also have been pursuing catching help. Later
  15. Yikes! When I replied, I never saw the image of the book cover/title on my PC. I wasn't at home - editing software. So my comment about leadership, winning and drinking was from what I remembered about Grant. I guess the author had the same ideas. As for the drinking, I recall a story about a woman coming up to President Lincoln and asking him if he knew that General Grant drank whiskey. Lincoln replied "He does? Then I'd like to find out what he drinks and send a case of it to my other Generals". (Could be paraphrasing there) I wonder if that's in the book. Later
  16. Edgy DC wrote: Seriously, no offense to President Grant, but if you saw this volume on the desk of a guy you were inteviewing with, wouldn't you think, "I don't want to work for this asshole"? As compared to... who? someone with a Robert E. Lee book on his desk? Seriously, since I like military history (although the Civil War isn't my sweet spot), it might even be a positive. Grant appreciated strategy, winning and a good stiff drink every once in a while. Probably all things necessary to be a major league manager. Later
  17. Edioglis Villasmil - 17-year-old right-hander. He pitched mostly in the VSL last year. 4.27 ERA in 59 IP. Made four appearances in the DSL. Why am I adopting him? Because every family needs someone named Edioglis. Welcome to the family, kid. Later
