  2. Ceetar wrote: more hip surgery for A-Rod. re-tear. likely missing the beginning of the season. Hearing this news, and looking at the picture of Jeter, it looks like between them this year, ... there will be a lot of ground ball singles. Later
  3. I don't care Who's on first or What's on second, as long as David Wright's on third. (Well, I do, but it doesn't flow.) Later

  5. Edgy MD wrote: I don't want to make too much out of WAR itself, because I don't mean to use it to compare different pitchers across generations, but rather particular pitchers (37-year-old 20-game winners) to themselves over the next two seasons. Yes, and Ceetar's explanation made that comparison clearer. Later
  6. Speaking of CY Young, does the WAR statistic look even better (or worse) when you remember he played a 154 game schedule, or does the stat factor that in? Never really thought about it until this thread. Pitchers made many more starts in those days, so maybe that smooths out the number. Is there such a thing as a WAR/start or WAR/IP stat? IMO, that would be era-equalizing. Later
  7. Aren't all the major league teams getting that additional $10 million per year in national tv contract money real soon? Yes, there's money coming off the books next year (I'm not sure how much because of the structure of the Bay buyout), but have any of the writers even mentioned the use of the new tv money? Why can't the Mets add that (or part of it) to the back years of any contracts they are offering? Later
  8. If I had my choice of the Uptons, I'd pick Kate ..., or are we just talking baseball? Later
  9. According to ESPN.com Barring a last-minute trade that did not appear likely or other reversal, the Mets plan to non-tender three players by the Friday night deadline -- right-handers Mike Pelfrey and Manny Acosta and center fielder Andres Torres, according to major league sources. Do you agree with those moves? Later
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: I can't imagine "picking a new team." I can. And did. Y'see, my "old" team played in Brooklyn... Later Yeah, but you weren't 49 years old when you picked that new team, were you? I was 16, but that was 49 in Brooklyn Dodger wait-till-next--years. Later

  16. Edgy MD wrote: I imagine there's two times an official player weight gets publicly released in his career --- when he first signs and reports to minor league camp, and that becomes his official "weight" through his minor league career, and when he first reports big league camp, and that becomes his weight thereafter. But I'd sure like to see that article. So would I. I searched and couldn't find it. Later
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Recall from where? Have you seen the guy at a Bluefish game or something? Official weights can hardly be trusted, but Baseball-Reference has him at 6'3" and 190 and that's really different. Doesn't look particularly massive... There was an article about the ex-Bridgeport Bluefish in a local CT paper. Maybe they saw him. Then again, it could have been a misprint. But that 300 pound number jumped off the page at me. As for the baseball-reference weight, I saw that too. But are those weights changed from the first time the player appears there? Later
  18. It isn't only his stuff that makes him hard to overlook. IIRC he currently weighs over 300 pounds. Later
  19. According to the Daily News (early print edition, full page article. Must have been a slow sports news day), Robinson Cano became a US Citizen. Later
  20. The ONLY possible reason to add a 30 year old, cut many times, retread arm like Burke over younger players is that he has just learned the knuckleball. Otherwise, there is no reason to have done it. Those guys are a dime a dozen (the preferred Wilpon salary) throughout the year. Later
  21. The deadline for finalizing the roster in preparation for the upcoming Rule V Draft is coming soon. I'm guessing Zach Wheeler, Darin Gorski, Wilfredo Tovar and Aderlin Rodrguez are very likely additions. Maybe one from the group of OF Alonzo Harris, 3b/ OF Eric Campbell or 3b/ 1b Jefrey Marte as well, while Reese Havens or Zach Lutz may be on the bubble to lose their spot. Should be interesting to see if the Mets leave a spot or two open so they could draft someone or sign a free agent. Later
  22. I heard it will be announced Today. Well, the GM said they wanted someone with an edge. I guess a guy who twice challenged players to a fistfight in his first go 'round with the team qualifies. Later

Whew! When I heard the name, I thought it might be this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Btfsplk Later
  25. Harold Reynolds should not be able to take part in any discussion about award winners. He won a Golden Glove for a year in which he made 18 errors at second base, playing more than half his games on artificial turf. I'm guessing he'd give the award to somone based on reputation. Later
