  1. Paul Goldschmidt is a monumental pain in the rosy red rectum. (from the UMDB) He has played 70 games against the Mets, with an over .300 BA, 275 AB, 15 or 16 HR and a gazillion RBI. And, he has never been hit with a pitch. Have they even ever tried to move him off the plate? Tried a different pitching approach? He seems too comfortable up there. Later
  2. He started and pitched 4 2/3 innings last night. He gave up (only) two hits (again) walked three and struck out nine. Later
  3. Not sure where I should ask this question but...I have noticed over the years, that the Mets tend to only hit well in Queens when the weather is warmer... So my question is: Is there a place to find splits based on weather/temperature conditions? Some box scores carry the game time temperature, but I'm not sure if that is captured anywhere on a database you could sort. I remember hearing the terms "hot weather hitter" or "He'll start to get hot when the weather does" going back to the 1950's and it probably goes back earlier than that. It may be because it is easier to get loose when you are warm, muscles tighten up when cold. But I'd also imagine there are studies about the ball carrying better in hot, humid weather. And those you might be able to find, perhaps a SABR study or a Baseball Prospectus article. Good luck finding them. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy the way Edgy is presenting this. Later
  4. Forget the Mendoza Line. McCann has flatlined. He'll need some serious CPR (or electric shock) when he gets back from the IL. Later
  5. Jake Reed is thanked for his service and optioned. Gosuke Katoh is up. Katoh is listed in baseball-reference as a "first baseman, pinch runner and second baseman". Did an infielder get injured in the first game? Later

  8. We just got a National Weather Service severe thunderstorm alert and we're about 50 miles north of NYC. It will last until 8 PM. Later
  9. This Mets reporter thinks it should be Peterson, too. (Yahoo copy, because the Daily News link has a paywall) https://www.yahoo.com/news/david-peterson-time-shine-180000325.htmlhttps://www.yahoo.com/news/david-peterson-time-shine-180000325.html Later
  10. At least I'm not still on that old baseball board* with that virulent anti-Mets posting M's fan any more. It still hurts. Later * = in case you're curious, it was FASTBALL. COM
  11. Colin fucking Holderman? David Peterson pitched six scoreless innings for Syracuse the other night, and has been successful against major league hitters this year. He got sent down to make room for Walker in the rotation. With Megill out they will need another starter. Bringing up Holderman, who has been relieving, is a head scratcher. Later
  12. Sad. RIP Later

  15. I'm following the St. Lucie game on MILB.com. It gives a pitch-by-pitch report. Alex Ramirez just "struck out on an automatic strike". I haven't heard of this before. What is that? Does some new rule (intended to speed up games) require the ump to call a strike if, say, the batter not take his place in the batters box in X amount of time? Something else? Later
  16. Cal pitched four no decision innings last night in which he struck out nine batters. He as started six games this year, and has not given up more than two hits in any start. https://www.milb.com/player/calvin-ziegler-683349 Later
  17. There was this snarky (really nasty) anti- Mets/ Mariners fan poster on another baseball board many years ago. For that reason, my opinion of the Mariners is somewhere between how I feel about the MFYs and the Braves. Payback's a bi**h. LFGM! Later
  18. Nogosek down to Syracuse (joining recent 27th fella Adonis Medina), Jake Reed up. Seems like I've been noticing Nogosek's name for a long time. When the Mets got him I thought he was a mid- thirtyish "grizzled veteran". He's much younger than I had thought. Almost worthy of the "baseball stuff I didn't know" thread. Later
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: Well the first four batters of the game went well. After that it kinda went downhill. There is going downhill and there is going downhill. Megill looked like he was going downhill with a piano strapped to his back. Later

  21. Lefty Specialist wrote: We know that the best cheesesteak sandwiches are actually in Camden, not Philly. "Camden makes. The world takes." 22. The Mets have acquired pitcher Locke St.John from the Cubs and placed Jacob DeGrom on the 60 day IL to make room on the roster. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stjohlo01.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stjohlo01.shtml Later
  23. Nowadays, it seems like everyone throws in the 96+ mph range...did they really elevate the speed? or is the radar gun that was in Nolan Ryan's era, different than today's radar guns? Radar guns have changed over the years. I read an article that said one of the early guns was used to track a test pitch thrown by MFY shortstop Mark Koenig at 137 MPH!!!. No pitch has been measured within 30 MPH of that on later radar guns, and I'm guessing the newer guns are more accurate. As for the overall increase in speed, current throwing motions are being analyzed electronically by experts who can raise a pitcher's velocity by up to 5 MPH by tweaking their motion. And then there's the old "today's players are bigger and stronger because of better nutrition" we have heard about in all sports. Minor inconsistencies ( 2- 4 MPH), can vary brand to brand of gun. And the placement of the gun and angle and distance to the pitch (varies from stadium to stadium) could also contribute to the differences. Later
  24. You're talking about moving the (metaphorical) boy away from the team. In my case the team was moved away from the boy, and I have never had any question or angst about why I chose not follow them, nor did I adopt the other local team (that members of my family rooted for) as mine. Another CPF-er who felt the same is Old Mole. We had a nice discussion about this when we met at one of his poetry readings a few years ago. Later
