  1. Rook of course is a reference to Lanstings Milledge
  2. Guess Rook will be up for the LCS He may be out of this game.
  3. Awww crud, Cliffy pulled up lame. DAMN!
  4. The 1986 Mets went further than the 1986 Yankees The 2006 Mets will go further than the 2006 Yankees!
  5. Z, how come you aren't using the 71 Topps style?
  6. Rose making a deal of getting runners on, and running up Maddux's pitch count. We may be in the pen by the 4th the way things are going with Ms. Maddux, the 90 Pitch Diva
  7. Lo Duca nailed on the elbow!
  8. Awwwwwwww crud Pitch out nails Reyes

It won't matter much in the grand scheme of the game but will get analyzed to death on the sidelines. NYY fans were clamonring for Melky all morning on the talk shows, somehow believing that he provides some sort of "small-ball" option that Sheff/Giambi/Matsui do not - despite the fact that that trio has outrageously high OBPs and are hardly the definition of 'one-dimensional' offense. MFY fans like to think of themselves as a scrappy, small-ball kind of team and are starting to rebel against the All-Star-at-every-spot kind of team, thinking that IT is the reason they're not winning now. Will be an interesting winter if this blows up on them today. Heh! See my point in the Twins-A's thread. Basically the fans are saying they should go back to the "basics" of the 96-00 Yanks, the paitence at the plate, doing "the little things," ect. Which makes sense, especially since looking at that vaunted 1998 roster, only Jeter and Mariano are No Doubt Hall Bound* *Though I'd except a Bernie, Pettitte, Posada or others will get some strong consideration late in their BBWAA run or on the Vets ballots. Actually, come to think of it, Tim Raines deserves some support as well, though more for his Expo days
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Yeah that's been the thing with Scataro. Oakland merely picked him up to be a fill-in middle-infielder just like he briefly was here; but then as Ellis and Crosby have seemingly taken turns getting injured Marco's gotten hisself over 1,000 ABs in the last 3 seasons. So as much as he would have been a nice complement to Valentin this year, it's not like you'd have carried him for the last two just to get to that point and it's unlikely that he would have racked up nearly as many reps if he stayed here. Yuppers. Marco, Super Joe, Woodward, even a Craig Wilson and Miguel Cario are dime a dozen guys you can get off the scrap heap. About the only thing you could have said was that he would have been Reyes' "caddy" over Danny Garcia in 2004, and certaintly not a position that would have had staying power, except maybe filling out a Minor League roster
  11. Anyone know why Maddux didn't do a "power play" with Penny for # 31? Seems odd after so many years of seeing him as 31, just looks, well, different.
  12. ]Also inconvenient game times. Today's game will be the first game I'll have a chance to see. I have a Saturday afternoon class in a few minutes that officially goes to 5:45! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!! But the professor is one that feels he can compress all that he needs to teach in a tighter, normal schedule so I should be out of there by 3:25ish, just in time to hear the final few frames on my way home (may do some shopping as well) and ready to listen and watch the MFY-Tigers and Mets-Dodgers double dip
  13. You know what, never mind...
  14. ]Don't speak for the city. I thought I made it clear that I was mocking that attitude from the show callers. Especially when a Chris Woodward is on our bench. I heard Yankee fans (hosts as well as callers) actually be giddy about adding a Craig Wilson to the bench in order to "add depth" to the bench. Essentially glutoney for glutoney sake. ]The Mets won 97 games this year. People want to open a vein over Scutaro, walk away, turn the radio off, roll your eyes for all to see. Just don't listen to sports call-in radio unless it's to augment an acid trip or something. I like mocking the attitude that suggests that since the team has an over 100 mil payroll that they should have an AS at every position, including bench and bullpen. It makes no sense, and the 2006 Yankees are the latest examples (when they end up losing to Detroit of course) I've heard the pining for Scutaro in the past, I was just surprised not to hear "Hey didn't we have that Scutaro guy? I tell ya Joe, if we had him instead of Woodward...We have a 100 million dollar payroll and our bench has a schulb like Woodward on it?..." calls, or posts on Internet message boards this season, thats the point I was making

  16. The AL has been the more compelling league all year, especially when it appears that the MFY might be jettisoned from the postseason. Also these two teams failed to win 90 games this year, so the potential for some not so great baseball is there in this series.
  17. Yankee fans must be hearing this song right about now Tom Jones and Bobby Bare I think are the most famous people to have sung this. Last night I went to sleep in detroit city, And I dreamed about those cotton fields at home. I dreamed about my mother, Dear old papa, sister and brother, I dreamed about that girl Whos been waiting for so long. I wanna go home, I wanna go home, Oh, how I wanna go home! Home, folks think Im big in detroit city. From the letters that I write, they think Im fine. But by day, I make the cars, And by night I make the bars, If only they could read between the lines! [spoken] You know, I rode a freight train north to detroit city. After all these years, I find that Ive just been wastin my time. So I just think Ill take my foolish pride, Put on a south bound freight and ride, Goin back to the love ones, The ones I left waitin so far behind. I wanna go home, I wanna go home, Oh, how I want to go home BTW, funny thing about that song, ESPN played the final lines in honor of Jerome Bettis playing in hometown Detroit for his final NFL game. Funny because its a song about LEAVING Detroit for home!
  18. Nomar is no Derek Jeter And Derek Jeter is NO KIRK GIBSON! No matter what the stats say, or that catch that ended Nomar's career in Boston!
  19. True, but this is the same city with a MFY Fan mentaility that needs an All Star or HOFer at every starting position, a major league regular in all bench slots, 5 guys in the rotation who could be the # 1 or # 2 starter on 29 other teams, and a bullpen stocked with former All Star closers And if not its always some former player that they keep "hearing" the name in the updates and they think the guy must be having a decent year as opposed to the flosum and jetsoum on the bench for their Mets or their MFY
  20. And of course all WS are skewered towards MFY
  21. Uh, his Postseason Wins this time... Third All-Time (Yes Whitey Ford is very much still the WS Win King) 15 John Smoltz 14 Andy Pettitte 13 Tom Glavine
  22. Johnny Dickshot wrote: Weiss too. True, but both have been viewed as cruel and cold hearted because of the passage of time. If there was an internet, sports radio and other outlets back then, the venom by the fans would probably have caused someone other than Ralph Houk to be manager!
  23. ]Shame on you, Hall of Fame. SHAME ON YOU. He DESERVED to get in, and now he's dead. SHAME ON YOU. Easy there Val. Hard for you, or anyone to say that without looking through the stats that the committee had in front of them. Clearly that committee wasn't influenced by the "Glory Of Their Times" way of putting people into the Hall based on story telling. Plenty of folks have been great ambassadors and promoters, are we putting people in the Hall now based on their Q Rating? I thought that was being reserved soley for the "Canseco should be in the Hall over Craig Biggio" crowd
  24. 27 outs away from upseting the MFY from postseason!
