On November 15, Citi Field is hosting an “all star” exhibition of Dominican vs Puerto Rican players. Seems like a fun idea. But then I keep reading: “Rosters for the teams will be announced in the coming months, but former All-Star Robinson Cano is scheduled to play his last professional game on American soil. The Mets have a .635 OPS at third base this year, ranking 26th of 30 teams.

Is this guy (part of) the solution to the Mets’ offensive woes? He’s in the final year of his contract with the Diamondbacks, at $15M for the year. He’s a good candidate for a qualifying offer (which he’d likely reject) if he remained with Arizona, so it’s not as if they’d get totally nothing by keeping him. He turned 34 a couple days ago and has been very durable (150 games in 2022, 162 in 2023, 158 last year, 98 of 100 this year). Oh, and he mashes homers, currently leading MLB with 35. (He averaged 28.5 from 2021-2024).

Indeed. I saw that the “true” cost to the Phillies is closer to $12M because of the luxury tax thresholds - so probably would be similar for the Mets. But even at $12M this seems like it would have been a good option, assuming the Mets were interested (I would surely think so) and that Robertson was (who knows?)

I’m sure there’s all sorts of considerations we’re not privy to, but that layout looks incredibly stupid, with home plate nowhere near any of the curves of the track, and thus basically everyone is a mile from the action.

Yeah, I think we all realize that they’d need to make sure his arm’s still attached, see him throw, check the radar readings, and everything else. I think you know that too and don’t actually think there was a suggestion that wouldn’t happen.

No prospects needed to trade, no draft picks lost by signing him. -Obvious extensive experience as a high-leverage reliever. -Wants to get paid (a $15M annual salary was the reported ask), but maybe that’s pro-ratable now. The Athletic reporting that Mets are among teams that have “at least recently looked into Robertson.” This seems like a no-brainer for a billionaire owner of a team that could use an extra arm.

The amazing thing is that Diaz, Stanek, Brazoban, Garrett, and until a few days ago, Butto had all been on the roster all year. And the Mets have still somehow used 35 pitchers this year so far.

Agree except Acuna should be the occasional defensive replacement for Vientos. Even once Vientos comes back — with Acuna, Baty, Taylor, Torrens, and Young, there are just way too many players who don’t hit nearly enough. Taylor and Torrens get to stay because they play premium positions, and I guess Acuna has value with the glove/speed — so Baty and Young need to go.

This is where Stearns has some potential leverage. A lot of big market teams (PHI, ATL, LAD, TOR, HOU) have long-term contracts with first baseman, and another set of teams (CHC, BAL, DET, KC, CIN) have cost-controlled young players there. And of course it seems pretty unlikely that Sacramento, CHW, MIA, TB, COL, PIT, MIL, MIN, or ARZ is going to spend that sort of money. STL is supposed to be rebuilding. That leaves a pretty limited pool: San Francisco, Boston, the other NY team, Seattle, Texas, maybe San Diego or Anaheim.

Assuming you didn’t mean it tongue-in-cheek: 1. That’s a pretty inflammatory thing to say about Boras without any proof to back it up. 2. If Boras is well known to us for attempting to secure the highest dollars possible — how could we think his potential clients don’t also know this? Put another way, if someone hires the Boras Corp. as their agent, why do we think they aren’t doing so eyes open and specifically because they are looking to make as much money as possible??

It hasn’t been a day, though. It occured at 10 PM Pacific last night and it’s 12:50 PM there now as I post this. I’m sure he’ll get an MRI but Mendoza’s pre-game press conference isn’t going to happen for a few hours and what is there to say before then / who are they going to say it to?

I believe that’s when he’s eligible to be activated off the 60-day IL, not when he’s expected back. Britton’s weekly preview at the Athletic has him expected back in August. Mike Puma of the Post reported today that Raley is pitching live BP and could be in minor league games by the end of June.

Tim Britton of the Athletic indicated that Blackburn is only scheduled to get the one start in LA and would remain in the bullpen, with Montas on track for 6/23 against Atlanta, the next time the Mets would need a sixth starter.

I wasn’t advocating for Singleton, just pointing out that the criteria of “hits well in small sample size at AAA” is not particularly meaningful. Of course I agree it will be someone already on the 40-man. They’ve maxed that out with the pitching injuries and have already moved as many people as they can (Montas, Manaea, etc) to the 60-day IL to save space. The only position players on the 40-man not in the majors are Baty, Senger, and Jared Young. I guess they could call up Young if Baty was hurt.

By that measure, they should be calling up Jon Singleton who has a .923 OPS this year in Syracuse.
