  1. Yeah. For everything that Sandy may have done wrong, he damn sure got that trade right.
  2. Nice job, Lucas.
  3. Chico Walker, although I don't remember if it was his 17th or 34th
  4. Mariners win in the 11th. First and third, one out. Austin Jackson hits a grounder to second. Angels get the 4-7 putout but Jackson beats the return throw by a step. No, that's not a typo. They were playing the five-man infield.
  5. Pirates/Reds go to extra innings this afternoon before the Pirates give up a grand slam in the bottom of the tenth. Cardinals' magic number to clinch the Central is now 1. Accordingly, barring a tie for the Central (one-game playoff would be at St. Louis on Monday) the matchups are going to be: Giants at Pirates for the Wild-Card game; winner plays at Nationals. Cardinals at Dodgers.
  6. Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal tweeted that it was only a conference call, not a in-person press conference.
  7. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: This might be sort of a tryout time for Wally, too. See if he can stay out of trouble and not piss everyone off. Kind of like a test drive. Right. Of course, Backman being on the major league staff for a season or two (after having success at AAA) sets him up well to interview for managerial openings, whether they happen in New York or elsewhere.
  8. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Make of it what you will, but if it weren't for the lame wild card format, their season would've died about a month before it actually did. When did you think the Mets' season died? They were four games under .500 at the all-star break and haven't been any closer to .500 since.
  9. Nice way to go out. I think tonight is his last game at Citi Field. It's gratifying to see him move on to big things elsewhere, particularly as there were just no openings for upward movement with the Mets. I always used to say that one day we'd see him leave because of his obvious talent. Sad to see that day come.
  10. I thought that supposed to mean he is ineligible for the entire postseason: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2014/03/27/mlb-drug-policy-increased-penalty-no-playoffs-for-ped-suspensions/6984181/ --- It also really bears repeating that a suspension for stimulants/amphetamines is only imposed after a SECOND positive test.
  11. There is also the possibility - admittedly small - that this actually goes to trial. Castergine is represented by the same attorney who won a $11.6M* punitive damages award for Anucha Browne Sanders against the Knicks and Jim Dolan. Admittedly, a big part of the problem there was that Dolan refused to consider settlement. Sad to say, I think it's an open question as to whether Jeff Wilpon is that stupid. * settled for $11.5 M prior to appeal
  12. Named in honor of Saul and Iris Katz, indeed.
  13. Ceetar wrote: It seems to suggest that she DIDN'T succeed and is an argument that it was an impossible job. Might be hard to prove that the harassment was the reason she was let go, though the harassment in it of itself is enough for a lawsuit I would think. Which I think is what Edgy was getting at? That if it's a harassment lawsuit it's not really about her job performance. The point is that she was given a difficult job but the Mets thought she was succeeding at it (for example, earning her bonuses). Her job performance is of course relevant to a harassment lawsuit. Her complaint brings it up to reinforce that there was no legitimate reason to fire her.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: The part about her job being hard because the Mets didn't sign free agents and it was like being on the Titanic --- that's egregious padding, and it shouldn't be there. I disagree. The deck chairs on the Titanic quote might have been a bit much, but I'm sure her attorneys would have no problem proving any number of people she's never met both said that and thought that. This case is in the Eastern District of New York, which draws a jury pool from Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk and Richmond Counties. There aren't going to be a lot of jurors with neutral or favorable opinions of Jeff Wilpon in those areas.
  15. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: --Also not a lawyer, but Kong I think anyone can view a court document unless it is filed under seal or whatever. Yes. I think Kong means "scanning that pdf" as in "quickly reading the document." The document is public record.
  16. G-Fafif wrote: It is assumed the tickets VP was let go for lousy ticket sales, which positions the Mets as their usual punch line, but it hasn't been substantiated that was the case. It hasn't even been confirmed that it wasn't her idea to leave. It could be anything from philosophical differences on pricing to problems with Jeffy's Cheerios. I understand the Mets haven't exactly earned the benefit of anyone's doubt in off-field matters (and not too many in on-field matters), but I'm willing to wait for the discouraging details of what actually happened to leak out before LOL'ing at the Mets for this move. Hard to believe it was even worse than expected.
  17. Read the complaint here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/tasneemnashrulla/former-high-ranked-employee-sues-mets-for-sexual-discriminat
  18. Every time there is a new one of these threads -- right after I admire the cards (love the Familia one) I am left bewildered -- there's NO WAY Brian Stokes was that good.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: There would still be teams burning through long benches and deep bullpens. If teams could scratch a player from the eligibility roster on a daily basis, the first four guys they'd put on the taxi squad would be the four starting pitchers not going that day. Yes, I realize this. This would still be a step in the right direction.
  20. It still baffles me that MLB won't require teams, in the age of expanded rosters, to elect a set 25 players to be eligible for any one game.
  21. I was ready to say Justin Maxwell, who hit a couple of big late inning homers against the Mets (a walkofff grand slam against Francisco Rodriguez in '09, a game-winning homer in '13 in extra innings) but he got DFAed and sent to the minors back in June. I remember him as part of that Josh-Cody-Jeremy-Dan group of Marlins players we hated in the mid-00s but there's nothing in particular about Josh Willingham that sticks out. I guess we have to go with Raul Ibanez. Several years with the Phillies followed by a year with the Yankees. Takes a lot of scrubbing to get that dirt off your soul. --- Which Boston Red Sox do you hate?
  22. Edgy MD wrote: In fact, there's a good chance, with the intended retirement of Derek Jeter at the end of this season (you may have heard about this somewhere), that Choate will be the last surviving 2000 Yankee, and therefore the last active player to face the Mets in a World Series. Two different things. Choate will be the last surviving person from the 2000 MFY playoff roster but he did not appear in the 2000 World Series.
  23. Chris Johnson. Self-appointed "you have to play the game the right way" people are terrible. Remember that nonsense fight he nearly started with Jose Fernandez last year? Who gets your goat on the Cardinals? (or is that too easy?)
  24. My feelings about Yankees aside, it was saddening to hear of his tragic passing. I was surprised to have missed the news stories about it but then I saw the Yankees were wearing a uniform patch in his memory.
  25. Benjamin Grimm wrote: If you gave me a billion guesses, I couldn't have told you that Bo Porter was the manager of the Houston Astros. Surely, if afforded one billion guesses, you would have started with every living former Major League Baseball player, no? You would've gotten in within the first million, I think.
