  1. Section 528 urges you to boo responsibly. your Q-Zone could give a fuck if one games been played or one hundred games have been played. At present, the only link I can find between endorphins and the vicissitudes of sample size exists within dismissing sample size as a reason to do anything when your functional universe begins and ends with the one game. if you boo, youre one of the staggering majority of bipeds on this planet whose emotional gauge runs from gut-busting, orgasmic joy to near-suicidal despair. And mostly you reside in the safe zone, within a standard deviation under the bell curve. You are probably not someone whose scale goes from gut-busting, orgasmic joy to meh. So it stands to reason that if you can jump up and cheer a David Wright homer in the eighth inning of game number 10, you can boo the crap out of Scott Hairston, who has something like 15 at bats and one hit. I get, get, get that some people suck and always will, and some people only suck because their girlfriend left them the night before or they stopped selling their favorite ice cream flavor (Play Me Off Cat Cookies & Cream, with little chunks of wait for it marsh-malleow). But much like there are highs and lows in all of us that must be acknowledged, there are highs and lows in this game that must be acknowledged, too. We acknowledge the highs with cheers because we paid good money to go in and cheer that stuff. It seems disingenuous, then, to lambaste those who, when faced with a shit-tastic play, have an equally strong negative reaction.
  2. Discovering Carlos Delgado has retired from playing baseball is like finding out Gerald Ford won't be running for president next year.
  3. Milledge clears waivers, accepts assignment to Charlotte.
  4. Done tonight. Single game tomorrow. 12:10 DH Thursday.

First home game I'm not at and they might not play. I had no idea I was so essential to the operation.
  6. The Happiest Recap offers more firsts. 007: 1967 -- Tom Seaver goes to 1-0 008: 2009 -- Citi Field goes to 1-1 009: 1986 -- World domination commences in earnest
  7. Wichita's own Mike Pelfrey should try something a little closer to home -- like K.C., Mo.'s own The Rainmakers. [youtube:3g0eczrz]7Hgl4VvcHU4[/youtube:3g0eczrz]
  8. Doug Flynn was on the 'FAN this morning, ostensibly to promote a community service project the Mets Alumni (sponsored by Citi) is doing. Didn't hear the whole interview, but Doug took umbrage at being referred to as good field/no hit. When it was pointed out his lifetime batting average was .238, he countered, "It was a hard .238." Laughing while he said it, of course. When FAN gets around to posting it on their site, listen. Told a good story about Chuck Cottier telling him not to be lazy with his feet around the bag the spring after he won the Gold Glove, the point being Cottier approached him delicately, and this was 1981 and that was Doug Flynn -- and it's much tougher these days for coaches to get through to much better-paid players. My favorite .238 hitter ever.
  9. From Rubin, pregame: Izzy abandoned his idea to take Jason Bay's No. 44, which is the reliever's traditional number. Instead, Izzy is sticking with No. 45. Isringhausen said that while Bay was willing to turn over No. 44, it was not fair to disrupt him. The reliever added it would have been an unfair "hassle" for equipment manager Kevin Kierst too.

  11. My fourth straight game @ Citi to start the season -- I'm in the lineup more than Beltran. Perhaps I've built up a tolerance to suck, because I know this game sucked, but punctuated by the unsuck, it was a lovely evening; Sunday sucked more gamewise and it was lovely, too. Curse you, habit, for dulling my discernment. Hahn Solo introduced himself in the right field corner prior to game time, so that was value added. He and Izzy were good to see. Mets pitcher fielding practice going awry...not so much.
  12. Tim Byrdak aspires late in life to be J.J. Putz.
  13. 6. The last game of the 2003 ALCS. I forget what happened. Better MLB Network countdown development is one infers that the Top 5 have to be, chronologically: --1975 WS Game 6 --1986 NLCS Game 6 --1986 WS Game 6 --1991 WS Game 7 --1992 NLCS Game 7 Gwreck already related there'd be two more 1986es after Red Sox-Angels Game 5, and as the only other 1986 nominees are those listed above, this series should finally get eminently watchable.

The true locals are the Brooklyn (and its centerfield food-match varieties) and Bluepoint at Catch of the Day. More and more, I come around to Bluepoint as my default first-beer option (or the Brooklyn Shackmeister). G-Fafif bought me a glass of something which was the only decent beer I had at Citi. Can't remember what it was though....I vaguely remember he said it was from LI but could be mistaken. Almost definitely Bluepoint Toasted Lager from the fish place. From LI, and Greg's a fan. Affirmative on Blue Point Toasted Lager (and Catch of the Day). Glad it made a bit of an impression.

  20. I liked that Frankie's AB music is the same as his entrance music, likely because it never occurred to anyone he'd need AB music. Not that anybody does.
  21. R.A. Dickey postgame after losing Home Opener, April 8, 2011 The hope is to give the fans and everyone thats come to the game the gift of a good game. And of course its frustrating and its hard and its sad, but I did the best with what I had."
