  1. Blaine Boyer has moved on, to the Pirates, "where at least I have a chance to win something." OK, he didn't say that, but he did sign with them.

"Nope." Ask him how many times he's seen Porky's, Gary. 1987 highlight VHS was "At the Ballpark," in which Hernandez and Cashen made like Siskel & Ebert and gave thumbs up and down to each month of the Met season. Mex presumably asked between takes, "What the fuck are we doing again?"
  3. "I prefer a burger to a hot dog, Gar', at the ballgame, to be honest with you." --Keith Hernandez, after spending an inning plugging Keith's Grill I'm glad he was honest about it. Most people prevaricate when pushed to choose a meat.

  6. Listening to TC lose patience with Fran-say-so on his weekly spot. I get the feeling if Collins was the '86 Mets manager and they were down 0-2, he'd have scheduled three practices on the off day at Fenway. We should only get to down 0-2 in a World Series under Terry Collins.
  7. Gonna dance right out onto the edge of time That's Jackson Browne, from "Disco Apocalypse". That's how Game Six of the '86 NLCS felt. The only other time I felt it was Game Six of the '99 NLCS as the Mets kept coming back. So we're 1-1 on the edge of time.
  8. Parnell, rhymes with DL.
  9. Daniel Murphy has been the target of Terry Collins' deathstare.
  10. TransMonk wrote: Which reminds me... I'm getting awfully tired of Kevin Burkhardt paraphrasing in the first person. Last night he did it again, talking about Scott Hairston and his comments about bats made of ash, maple, and birch. A few times during that segment, Kevin would switch between perspectives; "I" would go from meaning, "I, Scott Hairston" to "I, Kevin Burkhardt" and back again. Agreed. Every story Guys Burkhardt tells of that nature reminds me of Felix Unger's inspiring radio tales of heroism, albeit at a less breathtaking pace. And guys, when Hairston put down his bat, you know what he found? Penicillin: the Big P. Guys?
  11. What the [bleep] are you doing? Collins shouted, according to a person whod been made aware of the exchange. Mike [Nickeas] was up, [Mike] Pelf[rey] was on deck; I was trying to get something started, Murphy responded. So now youre the manager? I was going to pinch-hit [for Pelfrey], Collins shot back. Im the manager, not you. Get your head out of your [bleep]. In the time it took for Collins to air out his player, no more than 15 seconds, Collins had whisked away the last of Jerry Manuels legacy. He demonstrated, loudly, an interest in winning and losing that never stirred in Manuels bones. Collins arrived in Flushing promising to care, and for the most part, hes kept his word. But thats not to say Collins in-your-airspace style can reverse the Mets accelerating slide into the cesspool. Its already a dreadful season at Citi Field, with or without an emotional manager. The Mets have too little talent to make a dent in the East, too little money to rebuild quickly, and apparently, too few fans to fuel the organizations engine (and coffers). The stands were mostly empty in Tuesdays 6-1 loss to the Astros, a battle between two of the National Leagues worst teams that mercifully was over in under three hours. 1) Love the chew out. Great vicarious theater for those of watching from the comfort of our couches and depths of our despair. 2) WTF does Klapisch know about Jerry Manuel's bones? Do we know Jerry never tried to instill fundamentals in Murphy's head? Perhaps the kid is just errantly enthusiastic by nature (a.k.a. kinda thick). 3) Time of game was 2:59. One minute longer expunges all mercy? Oh, and cesspool? Is there a kiddie porn ring being run out of Charlie Samuels' old office or something?

  13. Kind of the inverse of one of my favorite back pages of all time, from Newsday, June 1986: Ho-Hum, Mets Win Again But they waited 'til June when the Mets routinely winning was established as more than a passing fancy. Since Martino is there to do a job, namely explain why the team he covers lost, he is basically saying here, I don't like my assignment, I wish they'd give me something else to do. And in the spirit of Chico Harlan (who, ironically, has been reporting from Japan, and not on baseball), I say put in for a transfer and turn the beat over to someone who understands this sort of thing happens in the course of a season. If Andy was a fan, I'd sooner accept his blah-blah'ness with the lightheartedness it was presumably intended.
  14. In this guy's defense, he's a great hard news reporter. Remember when he was reassigned from Spring Training to cover a major front page story? Blah blah blah blah rain blah blah blah tsunami blah blah Japan blah blah earthquakes devastated the country. Blah blah, potential nuclear meltdown. We really don't know what else to tell you about this one. But we will try: Granted, he did betray a bit of impatience on the second day of the tragedy and had to be sent back to St. Lucie.

Good to know. sort of, that this management group is cold and calculating even when it comes to their potential pets. It was a quick hook. They must have seen something they really didn't like...besides the kid bobbling that double play ball last Thursday. I just heard form a Mets person I know that has intimate knowledge of the ongoing situation regarding the Mets clubhouse that Emaus was caught lifting some clothes from Jose Reyes. "Hello? Brad Emaus? Hi, you don't know me, but I used to work for the Mets, and I'm thinking you'd like to supplement your major league minimum salary. I know where a lot of things are in the clubhouse but I can't get back in there right now. I can sell all that stuff and cut you in. I just need someone on the inside to go through the lockers and...hello? Hello?"

  22. Perhaps David spoke too soon, per Steve Popper in the Record Players whove been around say Wright has taken on more of a vocal role this year. He intervened when one clubhouse situation seemed to be splitting the room earlier this season. When the Mets flew to Atlanta on Thursday off a doubleheader sweep that dragged the team further down, he was one of the players who spoke up to lighten the mood. After Sundays game, he was one of the last players in the clubhouse, giving Manhattan dining advice to Jason Isringhausen and clothing guidance to rookie Brad Emaus. "Wear comfortable clothes, kid. Hauling your bags out of the clubhouse makes you sweaty." Also, Izzy might want to take his meals in Queens.
