  3. The '75 deGrom is so spot on that I squealed when I got it in sixth grade. (That's what she said.) Good night Brian Stokes, wherever you are.
  4. The strangely enough I riffed on something like this one year ago tomorrow in honor of Don Young Game.
  5. With the apparently poisonous presence of Darrell Ceciliani cleansed from the clubhouse at last, the Mets take aim at their first three-game winning streak in well over a week (they won in a four in row less than two weeks ago, but it doesn't seem like it, does it?) when they face the Giants at 10:15 PM EDT. Terry Collins will start Bartolo Colon, who will stare down every seagull who gets in his way. Bruce Bochy will eschew the early flight and go with Matt Cain, who was a trendsetter in terms of ruining David Wright's career.

  8. Reactivate your memories of Kirk Nieuwenhuis. He's startin' tonight! Curtis Granderson - RF Ruben Tejada - SS Daniel Murphy - 3B Wilmer Flores - 2B Michael Cuddyer - 1B Kirk Nieuwenhuis - LF Johnny Monell - C Jonathon Niese - LHP Juan Lagares - CF

  10. The Mets move up the California coast tonight (10:15 PM EDT) to take on the defending world champion San Francisco Giants and their starting pitcher Chris Heston, who no-hit them in New York last month. Except the Giants' record is no better than the Mets' and I don't remember a "Vander" in the middle of Chris and Heston, which is to say he ain't no Max Scherzer (and, technically, Max Scherzer weren't no Johnny Vander Meer, and grammar ain't what it used to be, neither). Buster Posey is the National League's starting All-Star catcher. Don't slide into him if you don't want a delay of game. Going for the Mets, their unexciting not so young lefty Jon Niese. They've won 2 of 3, or 2 of 6, or 6 of 10, or 6 of 17, or 11 of 23. Trend lines can vary.
  11. Adam Rubin will report for ESPN New York. Steven Matz will pitch for the Mets. Presiding for the Dodgers will be Mike Bolsinger. Rubber game. Be sure to take one.

  15. Step One: Get as far as one can from the Maverick who Revolutionized Baseball and Revived the Mets. Of course, the gap from "decent utility guy" to No. 3 hitter is more a matter of yards than inches and Turner is at a loss to explain why his career has blossomed toward the end of his prime years. He dismisses the comfort factor of playing close to where he grew up in Long Beach. He doesn't think it has anything to do with getting out from under New York's media scrutiny or with not having to conform to the Mets' view of an ideal hitter. He does, however, acknowledge that his approach at the plate didn't always mesh with what general manager Sandy Alderson was looking for. "I mean, he came over from Oakland. He's a 'Moneyball' guy. I don't know if 'Looking to walk' is the right way of saying it, but he talks about on-base percentage." Turner said. "I'm never looking to walk. Sometimes when you miss pitches you should hit, you end up walking. I wasn't worried about on-base percentage or anything like that. I was just trying to have good at-bats."

  18. From those wonderful folks who brought you "We Want A Hit" and "Til The Mets Win The Pennant" comes this repressed memory of an ode to your favorite baseball squadron..."You've Gotta Believe (Let's Go Mets)," straight outta 1985, apparently. The lyrics are almost too good in their historical on-the-noseness to not suspect a bit of Wag The Dog chicanery here, but that would be an awful lot of trouble to go to just to mesmerize the likes of us. It's actually quite catchy. And note the hip hop royalty that's somehow involved. vPlj5x6mUl8

  20. Non-pitching finger. Smart kid.
  21. Damn superstition when the Cubs come to Queens? I don't know if that's so wise.
  22. Frank Francisco...what a strange signing.

Our moneyball star in retirement. Gosh, yes. I missed that. Mets have to stop acting like an American League franchise. Perhaps Matz is saving them in more ways than we knew.
  24. Ceetar wrote: I'd never heard of Herb Washington until I just reran that query for non-pitchers. The things that slip from the general consciousness as years go by. Herb Washington was designated pinch-runner on the 1974 and 1975 Oakland A's. Owner Charlie Finley sought to revolutionize the game by signing a track star to not so much play baseball but channel his talent into baseball. I still don't know if it was a good idea, but it was cool as hell that someone like that endured on a major league roster as long as he did, at least while he was doing so.
