  1. Based on a conversation I had last night in Promenade... Magic Number Fever: CATCH it! Jason Phillips (Taylor Teagarden, eat your specs-free heart out) Kevin Plawecki (over one of Charlie O'Brien's incarnations) Rod Barajas Mike Fitzgerald (sorry, Ravishing Recker) Butch Benton (8 Games, 1980; Johnny Monell, too, I suppose) Duffy Dyer (1 Game, 1968; or Joel Youngblood, the emergency catcher who was never deployed) Choo Choo Coleman Jesse Gonder Jerry Grote Gil Hodges (64 Games as a Dodger) Rick Cerone John Stearns Ramon Castro Greg Goossen (in for more obvious choice of Don Dyer; see 18) Todd Hundley Gary Carter Todd Pratt (or Travis d'Arnaud, if you insist on being contemporary)
  2. I hear these guys really wanna get some six tonight. Granderson, RF Wright, 3B Murphy, 2B Cespedes, CF Duda, 1B Flores, SS Conforto, LF Plawecki, C Verrett, RHP

  4. Niese 3.5 Conforto 1.5 Murphy 1.5 Reed 1.0 Granderson 1.0 Cespedes 0.5 Clippard 0.5 Familia 0.5
  5. You got your answer: Jose Leger, Sand Gnats manager, to wear No. 60 and sit on the bench the rest of the way, per the postgame notes.
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: For the record, Nicolino was the original probable, Hand replaced him and when I went to edit, I deleted the wrong pitcher. aka: The Marlins gave you the Hand Jive He turned out to be their Nicolino patch.

  8. Anderson vs. Chacin at LA for those who can still multitask. Mets trail by only a game and a half.
  9. Harvey 3.0 Cuddyer 1.0 Campbell 0.5
  10. Box. Gilmartin 1.0 Parnell 0.5 Conforto 0.5
  11. Buccos need to get it in gear. They send Liriano to the favorable Dodger Stadium mound; the home team has that guy who goes to Subway before he pitches (sure he does).
  12. 4:05 start today. Nicolino vs. Hand.
  13. Good will to Mets.
  14. Matz 3.0 Uribe 1.5 Duda 1.5 Murphy 1.5 Reed 1.0 Robles 1.0 Familia 0.5
  15. Those stupid Marlins are now those wonderful Marlins. GO YOU FISH! Cosart vs. Roark at Irrational Park tonight.
  16. By my count, 115 Mets hold the distinction, so to speak, of having played for the Mets between 2009 and 2014 without getting to taste the fruits of a winning (above .500) season. Every last one of them is saluted here.
  17. Newsday just sold, along with the rest of non-MSG Cablevision, to Altice, a French telecommunications outfit. Dolans will stay at the Garden, you lucky Knicks fans.
  18. Fiorina and Rubio are likely to gain coming out of tonight. Whoops, wrong thread.
  19. Wright 1.0 Robles 0.5
  20. Also out: Hank Gola, Stephen Lorenzo, R.A. Dickey collaborator Wayne Coffey, occasional baseball fill-in guy Roger Rubin and sports editor Teri Thompson.
  21. Rox were solid as themselves last night, taking down the Dodgers in 16. De La Rosa vs. Wood. And just as paper covers rock breaks scissors cuts paper, De La Rosa splinters Wood.
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The thing is, he's written various versions of that same paragraph about ten thousand times. And it always got me.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: They should get a backup catcher named Artificialmuto. Jeffrey Loria runs a synthetic baseball club as is.

  25. When Lupica wasn't being a legendary jerk, he could be worth the hype. Here he was in the aftermath of June 16, 1997, the night Mlicki shut out the MFYs. The Mets and their fans had waited so long for innings like these. Waited through all these dreary losing seasons, one after another, six in a row. Really, this was the biggest game the Mets had played since the late 1980s, when they could still win 100 games and feel as if they owned New York and make the playoffs. They had lost their fans and watched the Yankees build themselves back into champions. They had watched the children of the city go back to wearing Yankee caps after all the years in the 80s when you walked down the street and saw more Mets caps. Sometimes the Mets felt like they were the kind of sports afterthought that the Islanders have become, that the Nets have always been in basketball. Now they had the stage again. The most famous stage. And were hearing "Let's go, Mets!"
