  1. Are those Canadian $$? I thought he had a great future as a LH PH, which probably isn't what one should be thinking about a fresh-faced callup. Had a big HR in a mostly forgotten epic comeback vs ATL in mid-June, the Sunday that followed the Saturday when the Mets blew a late lead. Darrell, Dilson, Juan and Travis set a club record: four players, none older than 26, each homering. Dillon Gee's last game (thus the need for a comeback). His non-return in September, like Gee's, told a story, one whose next chapter will be transmitted with a Canadian accent. And the TV guys really did slobber all over him. Nobody else was hitting, so maybe he seemed like the first coming of Conforto by comparison.
  2. Matt Harvey guested on Bravo's Look Who's Talking: Live with Andy Cohen, alongside Connie Chung (Thursday, January 28, 2016). There was one baseball question (pertaining to staying in for the ninth inning of Game Five; Harvey claimed he had no idea what inning it was until he went back out to the mound) and the rest involved whether Harvey's been in a three-way (he has), whether he's had shall we say relations on a ballfield (he has, in college), whether he's in the mile high club (he's not) and which Met brings the most sizable Louisville Slugger to bear, if you will (he invoked the Fifth Amendment). Kiner's Korner it was not. Not for nothing, but Harvey is NOT the star of that show. Connie Chung is hysterical. Connie would definitely garner her share of Schaefer points. Forgot to mention that as Andy was signing off, he hyped the "aftershow" to which, "the catcher with the best ass in baseball," Anthony Recker, would be calling in. Harvey broke up like he was Jimmy Fallon in the Debbie Downer at Disney World sketch. Meanwhile, Randy Rice wore a 7 Line neon Shea catcher cap on the January 29, 2016, episode of The Smartest Guy in the Room on the History Channel.

  4. Walking boot for the prospect who's been schlepping his way through the system since Twenty Aught Eleven. Partially torn tendon in the left foot. He's on the 40-man and is scheduled to be in Spring Training with the big club.
  5. Another intriguing Q. Gotta be long, solid, unspectacular careers. Guessing Richie Hebner, Jose Valentin.
  6. For the record, I would have not thought of Claudell, the only one here who played a relatively significant role on one of Vida's championship teams. I remember him making the ASG, but just wouldn't have connected him. I passed over Dock in my mind a few times until I remembered his Oakland time coming up in "Dockumentary". Guy I really wanted to be right was Mike Torrez, but his claim to fame is having one of the best careers w/o an ASG appearance. Also wanted Art Shamsky to have been an All-Star as a Red, but I knew that was wrong. Others who crossed my mind sans proper credentials included Teddy Martinez and Alex Trevino (plus J. Alou). Remember 1978 trade of Blue to the Reds that was nixed by commish (two years after sale to MFYs was kiboshed)? Would have made Tom Terrific a correct answer. Fun quiz for a dig-out Sunday.
  7. The tears of Nationals fans.

    Undesirable, but the right call.

Gil Hodges is the Gil Hodges Unforgettable Fire Award, which I'm presenting to Buddy Harrelson. I'll also be on the Mets Books and Mets Villains panels, for writing the former and bristling at the latter. Can't speak for the locale (I wish it were closer to the 7) but it's a packed program, hope many will come on down.
  10. Irvin scouted for the Mets in the late 1960s before taking a job making Bowie Kuhn look less inept. He was also one of the dignitaries who turned a shovel of dirt at the groundbreaking for Flushing Meadow Municipal Stadium on October 28, 1961. He may have been the last survivor of that ceremony. My first memory of Monte is him in his Giants uniform, smiling out from the two-page Old Timers Day spread in the 1972 Mets yearbook.
  11. Your fourth annual Oscar's Cap Awards, surveying the year in Mets Pop Culture contemporary and rediscovered. A tip of said cap to everybody who contributed in this thread.

Of the eight, Stauffer was among the seven who didn't attend high school alongside Vida Blue. That would've made a great (and tough) trivia question. You coulda, for example, put that list out there and asked us what it signified. Or left Stauffer off the list and asked us to name the Met that continues the pattern. Don't tell me that you knew that list off the top of your head. Did you? He's human, after all. He misspelled Hudson's first name. Met-a culpa on Hudson. Have always thought he's Jessie for reasons that are obscure to me. Last Mets In is a familiar topic to me. http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2012/10/02/the-last-picked-mets/
  13. "Walker for Niese" jumped out at me as a worst-case scenario following one of the pitcher's many trips to the DL.

  15. His big albeit isolated moments from 2013 and 2015 stand out, but it should be recalled the 2012 version of Nieuwenhuis was a modern-day peepul's cherce. He was called up the second day of the season, after Andres Torres hurt himself on Opening Day, and it seemed like a Pipp for Gehrig swap on a very small scale. Kirk hit right away, fielded a lot and was part of the sort of historic All Homegrown Lineup that April. Delivered the game-winning hit off erstwhile homegrown Met Heath Bell in the epic 46-pitch ninth, finishing off a sweep of the Marlins in Jose-Jose's return to Citi Field. In the same series, Nieuwy robbed Reyes of at least an extra-base hit, possibly a homer, in the erstwhile homegrown shortstop's first plate appearance. Kirk was so out-of-the-box popular that once he was sent to Buffalo, the team stores were loaded with unsold NIEUWENHUIS 9 product that would not move.
  16. Struck me as a self-righteous, not-my-fault parochial school gym teacher of a manager. First Met manager I truly disliked (as opposed to George Bamberger, whom I simply never much warmed to).
  17. Enjoyed being in the portion of the crowd that stayed to the end of Opening Day 2013 and knew enough to applaud heartily for Scott Rice's big league debut. Not only was the game out of hand (in a good way) but it was getting very brisk, so it wasn't a full house by then. What stays with me was the way the wind whipped at Scott's pants. They billowed while he stood on the mound. It wasn't an ideal situation for your first game in the majors, yet it will always be ideal in his memory of it.
  18. [fimg=600]http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/907/SZUxIZ.jpg[/fimg] "You don't think the fact that GAP is close to GAY will detract from my macho image, do you?"
  19. Not to be confused with that dick Scott from the '86 playoffs.
  20. A cover revealed itself overnight on Amazon...where the book continues to be available for pre-order. [fimg=300]http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/amazin-again-cover.jpg[/fimg]
  21. BTW, here's a Q&A connected to last night's appearance.
