  2. Mets have withdrawn their innovative idea to bring back post-injury former codpiece Matt Harvey on three days' rest, claiming the murky weather forecast pushed their hand to not test his arm. Terry said, "I haven't the faintest idea," when asked postgame who'd start Wednesday. Mind you, he really said that. Nick Pivetta goes for the Phils. Or it will rain.

  4. Post eventually went back in and changed cod piece to core piece, which I do not believe was the writer's original intent. Not dramatic enough for his point. Oh well. We'll always have the screencap.
  5. Mr. Codpiece will be part of the NHL-Mets press conference this Friday to hype the Winter Classic (Sabres at Rangers at Citi Field). Good to see he's focused on baseball.
  6. I'm seeing Wally Backman, No. 86, end of 2011 listed.
  7. I assume centerpiece and the writer (as writers will) mindlessly typed a word like it. I may not be quick to look for trainers and conditioning coaches to blame, but this I put on editing.
  8. The pride of Franklin Pierce returns tonight. Plenty of good seats still available. Also, an extra coach: Ryan Ellis, to wear No. 60. He is the Mets' minor league short-season hitting coordinator, which is a position I had no idea existed.
  9. Post hockey writer Larry Brooks, who occasionally produces a baseball column, has this today to say of Matt Harvey: Maybe the arm that has gone through Tommy John surgery, thoracic outlet syndrome and a stress injury to his right scapula -- all since 2013 -- will have enough life in it to convince the Mets to re-up the one-time and almost unbelievably short-lived codpiece of the franchise. Well, Harvey was front and center for the Mets.
  10. Rosario right index finger bruised, either Saturday night or for a while, depending on whether you believe Rosario, Collins or the whispering wind.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Referenced this tweet: [tweet]https://twitter.com/greg_prince/status/904081479373873152[/tweet] When the Mets were furiously charging in the first game, I sent him a note re the 8-run comeback. Figured it might come in handy if the Mets were going to, as a former Astros owner liked to say, keep charging. Nice of Gary to mention it in the second game.

  19. Jamie will wear 43, Jacob will be putting on 35.
  20. Keeping in touch with Stockholm soaks up a lot of a steward's bandwidth.
  21. Does he actually have to report to his team before midnight to be eligible, or is that and old rule that's no longer in effect. I remember a deal where Fred Lynn got traded to the Orioles, I think, on August 31, and there was a question about whether his plane would get to Baltimore (or wherever the Orioles were) before midnight. Lynn was traded to Detroit in 1988 and ultimately ruled eligible for postseason, though the Tigers didn't make it that year. It was one of the weirder situations in memory. Lynn's suspension from postseason competition is without precedent. He was declared ineligible because the pilot of his chartered Lear Jet, on a flight that originated in Ontario, Calif., didn`t contact the tower at O'Hare International Airport until 12:10 a.m. Thursday. They don't pull that nonsense anymore.
  22. Jim Gosger was acquired from the Pilots on July 14, 1969, as a player to be named later from the Greg Goossen deal on February 5. He is listed on UMDB as purchased from the Pirates on September 9, which was two days after his first game as a Met. He had been with Tidewater for 58 games in '69. The Cubs' acquisition of Rene Rivera by waiver claim on August 19, 2017, same day as what is now known as the Jacob Rhame trade, has not been added to the transactions page. Sure, you and I know it happened, but what of future generations?
  23. Greer gave us one perfect outing in which he got the 17th-inning win. Tanana didn't help the MFYs' desperate chase of the Blue Jays. Advantage: Mets. Other addenda to above: Glendon Rusch came over for Dan Murray in September of 1999, making no immediate impact but sticking around to be pretty important for a couple of years. And C.J. Nitkowski was acquired for a once-over in what was barely yet a playoff chase in earliest September 2001. There've been a few other pickups very late in the season that had nothing to do with a race; for example, the Mets took a flyer on Doc Medich in September 1977 so as to gauge his suitability prior to free agency. Aaron Harang, just four Septembers ago, washed up on our shores to get us through a pitching shortage. Ken Sanders was sold off in September 1976 to the contending Royals. Dock Ellis returned to Pittsburgh under similar expanded-roster parameters in September 1979. Joe Torre was happy to reunite with Tom Hausman in Atlanta once the Braves sent Carlos Diaz to the Mets in September 1982. The idea was to get to the postseason whether the arm in question could help once there.
  24. Multiple outlets report Jamie Callahan, acquired for Addison Reed, and Jacob Rhame, who was the bounty for Curtis Granderson, are joining the expanded roster.
  25. The September transaction in which a contender picks up a veteran even though he won't be eligible for postseason doesn't seem to happen anymore, or at least happen much. The Mets grabbed Ron Herbel, Dean Chance, John Candelaria and Dan Schatzeder in Septembers that didn't lead to Met Octobers. The second coming of Bob L. Miller happened in September 1973. The Cardinals lunged for Doug DeCinces in the final week of his career in case they needed an extra bat to ward off the surging Mets (who failed to surge). Dave Kingman disgraced himself by donning MFY pinstripes in such a matter in a sad September. These were all long-ago moves. Can't remember it happening in a recent September.
