Solly Hemus, Original Mets coach, 1923-2017

The '62 Mets were silly. But that was a mistake. So sorry Solly. -
Solly Hemus, the longest-surviving coach from the 1962 Mets, passed away Monday in Houston at age 94. He coached third base in the franchise's first year, and managed the Franchise, Tom Seaver, in his first professional year, for Jacksonville in 1966. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/solly-hemus-last-cardinals-player-manager-dies-at/article_6da38995-39a7-5632-965c-2290e5e4ec5c.html

Memories of Dan Warthen AKA the Warthen Appreciation Thread
G-Fafif replied to A Boy Named Seo's topic in New York Mets Talk
Edgy MD wrote: He lasted 9 1/2 years, for somebody who seemed to be just given the job mid-season as an interim when Peterson was let go. I would guess that's the longest tenure of any Met coach since the remaining guys from Gil Hodges staff who ultimately got fired along with Joe Torre. Maybe Harrelson gets a longer tenure if you add his coaching career and his managerial career, but I don't think so. Mel Stottlemyre lasted ten seasons, 1984 through 1993, so a little longer than Warthen. Harrelson was coach/manager consecutively from 1985, when he replaced Bobby V in or near the third base box, until the second-to-last weekend of 1991. Buddy also spent a year on Bamberger's staff, in '82, before moving to the SportsChannel booth in '83. He managed Little Falls in 1984 and Columbia in early '85. In his autobiography, he rued ever taking the big league managing job, speculating that if he hadn't, he could have had one of those forever coaching runs, like Frankie Crosetti had with the MFYs. Clean slate years, with new manager and pitching coach taking over to start a season: 1962: Casey Stengel and Red Ruffing 1968: Gil Hodges and Rube Walker 1982: George Bamberger and Bill Monbouquette 1984: Davey Johnson and Mel Stottlemyre 2002: Art Howe and Vern Ruhle 2017: TBD and TBA -
Geez, it's like McEwing didn't have all winter to make out this lineup.

I wanna say it's Blevins but I think Terry likes him too much not to say hello to him in the runway. It's Tommy Milone! Milone again, naturally.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I can't stand those guys. I've never watched their show, but I've heard their cackling coming from the TV when others in my household have had it on. I had never heard of it or them until I happened to be at the game where they were taping this bit and the Mets heralded their appearance repeatedly, plugging their upcoming gig at the Garden as well as their show. Based on the clip I just watched on YouTube, Thor spent more time in their sketch than he did on the mound in his most recent start.

Mackanin will serve as special assistant in 2018, hopefully assisting in another disastrous season.

Noah Syndergaard appears on Impractical Jokers, Season 6, Episode 23 ("Take Me Out At The Ballgame"), debuted September 28, 2017, truTV. In it, he innocently signs baseballs and tosses them into the stands before a game (between the Mets and Reds on September 8), the gag being that one of the title characters keeps swooping in and grabbing them, annoying everybody in sight.

NL East Enemies: 2017 Philadelphia Phillies

Pete Mackanin will not return as Phillies manager in 2018. -
It's almost as if people who work together in close quarters over a long period of time get sick of each other, particularly when things aren't going well. Carig is regularly featured on the Mets radio broadcast as "an insider" and appears frequently on an SNY show called Mets Insider. On the former, he usually keeps it light for half an inning with Josh Lewin or Wayne Randazzo, sprinkling in a few obvious observations as asked until a third out is mercifully recorded and he can go back to his seat in the press box. On the latter, he projects an air of seriousness while explaining how this or that aspect of the episode's given subject works. Until now, he has apparently kept the most inside of his inside information to himself. It would have been interesting had he led one of his sponsored reports with, "Well, Wayne-o, Terry Collins is incredibly unpopular with significant segments of the Mets hierarchy and there are serious rifts within the clubhouse regarding his approach and effectiveness." Perhaps Carig didn't fully cultivate his insiderdom until just this week. Presumably, the stuff he reported has been building for a while and he/his editors understand there is a timeliness factor to making it public; six months from now, a story about former Mets manager Terry Collins not being the leader of men he was made out to be (by Carig among others) is intriguing, but not topical. So the sense that this is a big screen door hitting Collins in the ass is unfortunate, but that's not Newsday's problem. All the anonymity is also unfortunate, but then you don't have the dishiness that makes it so delectable. If Carig puts it out there last year or earlier this year -- his story indicates it's not a new situation, but one that has deepened and deepened some more -- then doing his primary job (never mind the Insider gig) becomes challenging. I've gotten the sense that he doesn't particularly enjoy the beat he's been on for five-plus seasons and wonder if this serves as his parting shot. It's not necessary that he steers clear of the Mets after this -- Rubin dug up dirt and kept at it year after year (somebody always wants to talk to somebody who makes himself available to listen) -- but the sudden decision to tell it like it is would seem to run up against his de facto ballclub-endorsed "Insider" role, which comes off as fairly incestuous to begin with.

I notice the Other Teams drag down menu continues to list the Florida Marlins rather than the Miami Marlins. Don't know if this is an aesthetic call or a detail that escaped the Ultimate arbiter's attention when the Marlins rebranded in 2012.

They're done slugging at Citi Field for 2017. When Dominic Smith went deep in home game 81, the videoboard informed us it was the 100th Met home run of the season hit at the death valley turned band box. In the postgame notes, it said 101. Either way, the homers continued to fly this year. Hard to believe there was a time they barely crawled. Here's how the power has surged on all-time regular-season basis through nine seasons. From that story: In case there is any doubt about Collins’ standing, the team last month removed the manager’s image from the rendition of “Piano Man” that plays on the video screen in the eighth inning at Citi Field. Previously, the Billy Joel lyric “And the manager gives me a smile” showed a cutout of Collins’ head. Is this really a thing? Why wouldn't they wait until after the season to edit him out? Or is this just a case of people reading tea leaves and seeing what they want to see? The figurative public beheading of Terry Collins first reported here. In 2007, when the Mets were doing the "Sweet Caroline" singalong (when it still had residual goodwill from the 2006 postseason), there was a clip in the accompanying video of hitting coach Rick Down pointing upward. After the All-Star break, following his dismissal, Down's segment in the production was disappeared. Want answers? Watch the video board.

IGT 9/24/2017: WAS@NYM -- Ace on Ace Action
G-Fafif replied to G-Fafif's topic in Archived Game Threads
Considering the weather (gorgeous), the company of the lovely Mrs. F (also gorgeous) and the stakes (so low they passed not through but under the turnstile), it was about as tolerable a loss as one could, well, tolerate. If I couldn't have a Sunday win, I'd settle for a Sunday not embarrassment. Yeah, the leaving runners on with ample opportunities to tie it up or win it in the eighth and ninth was disgusting, but that's kind of a standard Met loss. Loved deGrom passing 200 innings, striking out 11. Wished he'd have come out for one tip of the cap or something to start the seventh, but Terry is blind to the rituals the diehards love. Kremlinologists are noting the removal of TC's likeness from the "...and the manager gives me a smile" segment of the Piano Man singalong and taking that as the strongest sign that Dear Leader will be removed imminently. Missed the usual cornball "Thanks Mets Fans" video clips of non-English speaking September callups and disgruntled relievers who've barely been used in a month, with the David Wright kicker edited in from 2012 or whenever he was last in one piece. They did give out some swell prizes to Appreciated Fans instead of the usual "here's a bag" goodies for answering questions right or wrong. Dude who knew Jack Hamilton was the last Met pitcher to grand slam (though I think he might have been slipped the answer -- or heard me shouting it) won a flat screen TV. Somebody else was awarded an Apple Watch, which I understand are a thing. Some dude didn't know what year Doc won the Cy Young and both Howie and I were visibly disgusted, though I was the only one who groaned loudly enough to draw stares. Don't know if it was highlighted on SNY, but Jose danced as far down the third base line as I'd ever seen a baserunner do outside of 42. Made sense. Rendon was shifted over for Smith, there was no risk for Reyes. Alas, unlike the Brooklyn Dodger patsy pitcher in the movie (Jackie was still a Montreal Royal), nobody discombobulated Scherzer and there was no balk. Going back for one more helping Wednesday night, 'cause it's what I do. -
DeGrom! Scherzer! Pitching! Expect a 2-1 nailbiter or a 10-9 mess or anything in between or anything beyond. No, ya don't know what you're gonna get. Sunday afternoons at Citi have not been kind to the Mets, but I'll be heading out there soon (very good seats popularly priced) to see what I can do about it. My previous Sunday visit was the day Adam Wilk briefly entered our consciousness while Matt Harvey took a powder. I'm gonna guess Jake at least shows up.

Dwight Gooden came back from a shoulder injury in September 1989 and threw two long relief outings, 7 IP in all. Bobby Ojeda returned in September 1987 with three long relief outings totaling nine innings before getting the last home start of the year (which he won, with the Mets hanging on in their quest to repeat). I figured they'd ease Noah back in with something similar. Maybe they have new ideas since then.

Thanks for the fix!

On September 22, I erred in omitting Jeurys Familia from my ballot. Please give him 0.5 point from me and change Nori Aoki to 1.5 to compensate. Thank you.

Mets will start Syndergaard Saturday night for one inning, then bring in Harvey for as many as he can throw. No kidding. They're really doing this.
