  2. The young man (his 25th birthday is Sunday) will wear No. 72 out of a lifelong allegiance to Carlos Torres's final months as a Met.
  3. Matz to the 60-day DL, in case you weren't sure of his whereabouts, to make room for Evans, who plays third, short, second and left base, stop, base and field, respectively.
  4. With Flores out, Rosario healing and Cabrera in for an MRI, the Mets are calling for Phillip Evans, minor league infielder, to join them for some major league service time.
  5. I like the rumor I've inadvertently started, but I have no evidence Seth Lugo is Jewish. Nevertheless, he's welcome to partake in Shawn Green's matzoh ball soup, a legendary clubhouse favorite, if that's still a staple of the postgame spread.
  6. Justin's year at St. Lucie: 20 appearances, 16 starts, WHIP 1.563, ERA 5.00. Will turn 22 later this month.
  7. Is currently flourishing in his first extended big league exposure.
  8. An early good Shabbos everybody! Services at Congregation Seth Sholom commence promptly at 7:10 PM, Rabbi Lugo presiding. The topic of tonight's sermon: Why we must forsake Amir Garrett and the Cincinnati Reds in order to gather a third consecutive triumph even in the face of eventual oblivion. Free shirts will be provided, please bring your own tallit. A blessing on your Nimmo!
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: CF/speedster Billy Hamilton broke his hand yesterday and will almost certainly miss the remainder of the season. So much for Hamilton being the hottest ticket in New York.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Wait... WHAT? We have to do this again in 2018??? There is a Judgment City feel to this a la the verdict Albert Brooks's character feared in Defending Your Life, having to go back and start over.
  11. From DiComo: Addressing his status today for the first time since surgery, David Wright says he's "on a road to recovery." He intends to keep playing.
  12. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The month of September is offering opportunities for the few remaining players to get what could be a rare chance at Schaefer glory. Brian Stokes retired too soon. Assuming he retired.
  13. Flores out for the year from his Marcia Brady injury.
  14. No September series vs Reds for first time since 2012. That's been weird for five years running.
  15. "HEY," said the 2017 schedule, "I'VE STILL GOT GAMES! AND SEATS! GOOD SEATS! PLENTY! AVAILABLE!" First thing that jumps out at me on what appears to be the magnetic schedule they will give away on the final Sunday (which is not Closing Day in the Home or actual sense) is the Mets are in Canada on the Fourth of July next year. Why the Mets hate America, other than they lose a lot here, I do not know.
  16. Visitors: Ervin CF Cozart SS Votto 1B Duvall LF Gennett 2B Suarez 3B Schebler RF Turner C Mahle P
  17. Tonight's hodgepodge: Reyes SS Aoki RF Cabrera 3B Nimmo LF Lagares CF Smith 1B Plawecki C Reynolds 2B Mr. Codpiece P
  18. The onetime codpiece of the franchise will be front and center for the Mets as the Reds come to town. Tyler Mahle will pitch for Cincinnati. The four probable pitchers the Mets have slated for this series -- Harvey, Lugo, Flexen and Montero -- each have ERAs of 5.00 or higher. Without diving into Baseball Reference and how Craig, Hook, Jackson and Miller lined up in September of 1962, this has got to be some kind of first. Besides, each those guys got their ERA in the fours by the time the season ended. 718/507-TIXX or mets.com for tickets, plenty of which would figure to be available.
  19. Announced attendance for Wednesday night's rain-shortened victory over the Phillies: 19,617, or ~18,617 more than were evident via television and eyewitness report. Noteworthy is this was the first sub-20,000 attendance ever reported by the Mets in the Citi Field era and, as such, the lowest paid attendance in the ballpark's nine-year history. Last Shea attendance that was lower was April 5, 2006, second game of the year, a chilly night that officially drew 19,557. That was also the last sub-20,000 gate the Mets reported at Shea. Of course paid attendance numbers have regularly eluded the eye test since 1993, the year the NL switched from turnstile count to tickets sold. Hard to imagine 19,617 tickets were sold for a Mets-Phillies game at this moment in time.
  20. As rain falls over Nassau County, here is the Phillie lineup for tonight: Hernandez 2B Galvis SS Williams CF Hoskins LF Kim RF Joseph 1B Crawford 3B Rupp (not Ruf) C Pivetta P
  21. Paul Schaal, the Royals third baseman in the franchise's formative years, has died of cancer at age 74. He gave way to a kid named George Brett and liked to say, "I tell everybody it took a Hall of Famer to take my job from me." Paul Schaal's Piazza and Pub became his post-baseball calling card in Kansas City for many years.
  22. Get psyched for Gsellman and his pals! Reyes SS Aoki RF Cabrera 3B d'Arnaud C Nimmo LF Lagares CF Smith 1B Reynolds 2B Gsellman P
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He named his cat after Howard Johnson? Only against righties.
  24. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Saw some SNY vid w/ Keith and his gato and Keith positively loves that cat. If you haven't already, meet Hadji!
  25. Gsonna gbe Gsellman, Mushmouth from Fat Albert reports. Anthony DiComo, too.
