  1. Aaron Boone says there should be a mercy on the fans rule.
  2. Johnson could have finished two terms in the playoffs, but Terry didn't use him in the Wild Card Game. The last Recidivist Met's second term lasted about as long as Tejada's.
  3. Amed Rosario – SS Joe Panik – 2B Pete Alonso – 1B Michael Conforto – RF Wilson Ramos – C J.D. Davis – LF Todd Frazier – 3B Juan Lagares – CF Noah Syndergaard – RHP
  4. Ralph always enjoyed being linked to Liz.
  5. Senator Warren was a good sport for appearing in this context. But nobody would turn down a chance to pose with Ralph.
  6. Ruben becomes the 50th Recidivist Met in franchise history tonight, the fourth whose initial "final" game came in the postseason. That's a good trivia question - re: who the other three are. Two were also 2015 Mets before directly departing. The other was from 1999.

  8. Tejada DFA'd. Flexen up.

  10. Five years ago, though nobody cared because it was the 2014 Mets, a slightly similar contretemps played out. Mike Puma had written after an early-season win that the only substance Bartolo Colon tested positive for was peanut butter, guffaw. If I recall correctly, the players wouldn't talk to any reporters postgame unless Puma excused himself, which he did so as not to be an obstacle to everybody else. He apologized for the wisecrack and everybody went on with their lives. I was torn between admiring the Mets' solidarity in defense of a teammate who must have been bothered by it more than you'd think (it wasn't so long after Colon's PED-ish suspension) and irritated that they didn't just roll with it. It was a modestly clever jibe from a reporter who passes for hilarious in a press box context, the kind who'd tweet, "It's Bark in the Park Day, but there's a tarp on the field because it's raining cats and dogs," and get 200 likes because he writes for the Post.
  11. Probably the third Greatest Win of the Year to date. Not "third-greatest," but the third time we're in Greatest territory. I thought the second game of the doubleheader sweep of the Marlins that pushed them past .500 was the Greatest. Then I thought the Friday night over the Nationals with Conforto and the shirt was the Greatest. Now I believe beating the Indians in the tenth as they did is http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2019/08/22/love-is-in-the-air/the Greatest...until the next comes along. I think I have to disagree with you there. There is no topic I'd rather have spur good-natured disagreement than, "Which was the greatest win of a year increasingly crammed with them?" And I'll happily take the runners-up home after the dance every night of the week. Thing I loved here, all personal aspects aside (genuinely sorry for your friend's loss), is this is after the Mets were generally believed to have peaked. Reality was allegedly setting in when they lost three in a row to Washington and Atlanta. Well, Cleveland ain't no tomato can and suddenly we've won four straight, it's almost two weeks later, and we are more than alive and kicking. Also, just an unbelievably tense game, I thought, one that exploded in ecstasy when it was over. Again, your smileage may vary.

  13. This feels like a team on a tear that we watch longingly from afar doing things we wish the Mets would do with players we wish the Mets had. But it's our fucking team, our fucking Mets.
  14. Adeiny Hechavarria made a highlight reel play to end Atlanta's win over the Marlins tonight, the bastard.
  15. Superb game to attend. A few too many Tribal fans, but they didn't have much to cheer about. Lotsa Met energy, though. A wave started late and it wasn't even grating. As seen on TV, Alonso, even when not homering, is a ribbie beast.
  16. Al pinch-ran 51 times as a Met.
  17. SABR has posted the updated bio here... https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/9bc53b1dhttps://sabr.org/bioproj/person/9bc53b1d
  18. We've lost an Original Met, a Recidivist Met and a practically lifelong Met today, as Al Jackson passed away today at age 83 in Port St. Lucie. He suffered a stroke in 2015. He was "my guy," SABR-wise, the only bio I'd written, recently updating it to encompass what I filed ten years earlier -- not only the illness but more about the obstacles he faced coming into and staying in baseball. Everybody spoke so highly of him throughout his career, which didn't really end until the stroke. He was, like Phil Regan, our organizational pitching guru, except he did that pretty much forever. You will remember him from Bobby V's coaching staff on those playoff teams of 1999 and 2000. You'll remember him in a second go-round in 1969, perhaps, and you're surely familiar with his being the rock of the staff from 1962 through 1965, tough years for a rock, but Al never sank. Little Al Jackson, as Bob Murphy called him. He is missed already.
  19. For those who believe living in the moment isn't enough...
  20. Mets last played a rain-shortened game 9/16/2017, beating the Phillies at Citi Field in six, 6-3.
  21. Mike hit his 40th HR of 1999 in the Mets' 161st game. The club tried to help him tie or break the record by getting him a 163rd game, but he stopped at 40. I assume it was because he wanted Todd to maintain one Met legacy.
  22. Difference between today and MIL-WSH last night, from Keith's perspective, is Keith was doing this game.
  23. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=19256 time=1566160198 user_id=68] Jeezuz! All Alonso's doing lately is driving in lotsa runs. Who cares about that? I wanna see some homers.
  24. 40TH HR: Hundley 1996: Mets Game 143 Beltran 2006: Mets Game 143 ALONSO 2019: Mets Game 124
