  1. Young Darryl legging out those triples! I saw one of them, plus a homer, live in June of ‘83. Felt like the future was pulling into third base.
  2. Mike Puma reports Mets management that came along last fall isn't bringing Edgardo Alfonzo back as Cyclones manager, opting for “their own people,” whatever the fuck that means after Fonzie, as Metsie a Met as has ever been, certainly in the past quarter-century, managed Brooklyn to its first outright NY-Penn title. (No coda like, “instead you're coming to the big club!” attached.)
  3. Based on historical PotG patterns, Ty Wigginton and Kaz Matsui likely would have been the ‘03 and ‘04 rookie winners, but the executive choices surely look better in hindsight.
  4. This hour http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2019/10/16/doctor-my-eyes/fifty years ago.
  5. Good for Ryan Zimmerman, given that David Wright vouches for him. Good for Charlie Slowes, who grew up a Mets fan and followed his broadcasting dream to the Nats booth in 2005 and has done a nice job there ever since. Good for the memory of my friend's wife's uncle who bought season tickets as soon as the Expos moved to town, stayed loyal for the rest of his life, which sadly ended before he could experience this, and was super gracious to me Metwise always, but especially in 2015 and 2016. Nationals League Champions. Go figure.
  6. Houston Astros, American heroes.
  7. Grimm is the Player of Every Year. Corey Oswalt and Ruben Tejada received no votes.
  8. Watching the Cardinals' futility, even if it is as a byproduct of Nationals effectiveness, is surprisingly enjoyable, like I forgot how much seeing them lose can be invigorating.
  9. Crazy, by the way, that Edwin Diaz led the team in saves by oodles and was never once ROTM.
  10. Dom Smith won Bench Player on one swing, which isn't that unusual in this category, since a game-winning pinch-hit can sway the vote big-time, but he had only one swing in the month in question -- the final swing of the season. I actually found myself thinking, in the aftermath of that game, "Well, I guess this kills Rajai Davis's award." Suarez appears unhappy to have placed second in the NL homer derby. DeGrom 1970 would get a fine from Hodges for that hair. But boy does he look good.
  11. More like Deadbirds.
  12. Strasburg vs. Flaherty. Cardinals might want to look into getting going.
  13. Some thoughts on the Seaver documentary http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2019/10/14/the-greatest-story-ever-retold/here. It will be rerun several times on FS1 between Sunday 10/20 and Thursday 10/24; check local listings, as they say. Not the be-all and end-all if you've been Seaver-conscious your entire sentient life, but well done.
  14. I watched a few innings of a game at Citi Field alongside Eduardo Perez once. Certainly knows his baseball. It didn't occur to me I was sitting in the company of a potential future Mets manager, but that's not something that would necessarily occur to me.
  15. Eduardo Perez added to the interview list.
  16. In Bewitched, Season 2, Episode 3 (“We're in for a Bad Spell”), September 30, 1965, Aunt Clara researches the Book of Spellees, and finds the New York Mets listed alongside Richard Nixon, among others.
  17. In Sunnyside, the generally unwatchable Kai Penn vehicle on NBC (Season 1, Episode 2, October 3, 2019, "The Ethiopian Executioner"), lead character Garrett Modi, a disgraced former Queens councilman, makes reference to having been hit in the face while trying to catch a fly ball at a Mets game last week — and Jimmy Fallon having had "a field day" with the clip.
  18. Nas wore a Pete Alonso jersey on tour this year.
  19. Madam Secretary's first pitch went off without a hitch to ceremonial catcher Luis Guillorme, though Elizabeth McCord did dream in advance that she hit Mr. Met in the head (big target).
  20. Carlos Correa makes it all better.
  21. Jackie Hernandez, shortstop on the 1971 world champion Pirates, 79.
  22. Caught the full version of the Jiffy Lube commercial in which all context is explicit and the narrative makes perfect advertising sense. The edited iteration (“seriously”) they've shown 4,000 times during each game is what happens when somebody is told to “make it fit” w/o further instruction.
  23. Not a promising Game One.
  24. Scherzer vs. Wainwright.
