  1. The old Gold Glove is a new Friar. Absolutely where extra base hits went to die. For a time, a Mex/Rey-Rey level defender. Feels like he missed the past three or four seasons but was fully healthy in 2019. High-priced pinch-runner toward the end. Really liked him. Good luck, Juanny Beisbol.
  2. Juan Lagares joins the Padres.
  3. It's FAFIF's fourteenth annual http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2020/02/10/outta-sight/In Met-moriam montage for those who have literally left us in the past year (definitively no longer with the team, that is). This edition includes Easter eggs!
  4. One scoreless inning in Pittsburgh. Wore No. 68. Threw with his left hand.
  5. Much like the blogs back in the day that didn't take their cues from what they read in newspapers (publishing series previews as if you couldn't figure out the Mets were playing the Cardinals tonight), the Mets podcasts I find most palatable are the ones that aren't under the impression that they have to be latter-day Mike and/or the Mad Dog. I've been America's Guest on many of them. I'm happy to be asked and go where the hosts want, but I've never understand the point of "let's talk about shortstop depth" for the umpteenth time.
  6. Donnie Hart, after one inning as a Met, signs minor league deal with A's.
  7. SABRcast with Rob Neyer (in-depth interviews with highish-profile guests). Baseball by the Book (baseball books). Good Seats Still Available (defunct sports teams & leagues; some baseball). The Metrospective if you're an Athletic subscriber, hosted by Pete McCarthy and Tim Britton, for what's going on at the moment. A Metsian Podcast with Sam Maxwell, Mike Lecolant and Rich Sparago (I'm on now and then). Baseball and BBQ with Jeff Cohen and Leonard Aberman, a pair of Mets fans. Mets Musings with Gary McDonald, a refreshing non-blowhard. The Press Box: the nexus of media and sports, entertainment and politics, hosted by the exquisite Ringer writer Bryan Curtis and his pal David Shoemaker. Not a ton of baseball.
  8. From the Pest, in the runup to the 2000 World Series: As far as the Mets, Kahn is not very fond of the current National League team in New York. “I always felt, probably emotionally, that the Mets were a copied Dodgers,” said Kahn, whose latest baseball tome, entitled “The Head Game” (Harcourt, $25), is an analytic look at baseball from the pitcher's point of view. Fred Wilpon probably read that and took it as a compliment. https://nypost.com/2000/10/12/kahn-series-no-biggie/https://nypost.com/2000/10/12/kahn-series-no-biggie/
  9. I'm surprised they haven't yet taken down those C'MON & BE A 'TRANNIE! billboards.
  10. Gil Conan, postwar outfielder, 97. Was the oldest living New York Giant. Only 16 of them remain. Played 13 games for them in 1955 and 1956.
  11. Kendrys Morales is hanging them up, whatever they are.
  12. Brian Schneider is the new quality control coach.
  13. Memories of Summer describes the World Series as I always wish to think of it. Six hundred of the best and most popular sportswriters in the country would cover every inning of every game. The ranks included […] Vincent X. Flaherty of San Francisco. The closest major league stadium, Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, stood 2,140 miles east of Flaherty's home base, but the old World Series transcended geography. It was a front page story across the country, especially exotic to people who lived thousands of miles away. Few Americans had seen anything more of a World Series than patchy black-and-white scenes worked into newsreels. Those glimpses left imagination free to roam.
  14. Jessie, we won't keep the wine cold for you...
  15. Author of one of the essential baseball books, The Boys of Summer, and many others, 92. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/obituaries/roger-kahn-who-lifted-sportswriting-with-boys-of-summer-dies-at-92.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/obituaries/roger-kahn-who-lifted-sportswriting-with-boys-of-summer-dies-at-92.html
  16. It's looks perfectly normal in Swedish.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Can we get a list of which levels of the field office are strange and which ones aren't? Third floor is bananas!
  18. Mr. Met will be on hand when Mike Bloomberg opens his Bayside field office, which is strange on several levels.
  19. Anthony Swarzak Phils up in a minor league way.
  20. Anthony Swarzak — a Phillie, too.
  21. More players to come in Dodgers-Angels wing of all this.
  22. Infielder Luis Rengifo from LAA to LAD for Pederson.
  23. Maeda from the Dodgers to the Twins. Brusdar Graterol, top MIN pitching prospect, to Sox.
  24. Twins supposedly part of Betts to Dodgers deal — and Joc Pederson en route to Angels. Yet Steve Cohen can't buy the Mets.
  25. Price and Betts reported going to Dodgers. Alex Verdugo centerpiece of package heading to Boston.
