  1. Would've loved to have seen the two of them weave a few 6-3s together.
  2. If it doesn't play here, seek the Legendary Mets Broadcasters Bob Murphy (et al) page on Facebook.
  3. A gem. A time capsule. That voice. Listen. Seriously. Listen. https://www.facebook.com/groups/120215078523337/permalink/655488064996033/https://www.facebook.com/groups/120215078523337/permalink/655488064996033/ Video WWW.FACEBOOK.COM
  4. Article in the Snooze today, tracking the insanity of sports talk radio in a given day sans sports, mentioned Kent was on the FAN calling Carlos Baerga “a turd,” which, I gotta say, detracts from the “not a dick” supposition.
  5. The closest Fran Healy ever came to expressing an opinion or producing an insight was when he intimated Kent wasn't popular among his teammates because “he wouldn't play their reindeer games.” In 1993 and 1994, Jeff Kent was an antler player — a Met to hang our hat on. Not only was he setting hitting standards by a Met 2B, he had Kent's Kids out in LF, which was pretty good for a lightly established player to support. In an instant, it was almost universally agreed he was a dismal presence in all senses of the pejorative. It was quite the Met memory hole he fell down from there.
  6. This year's Johnny Murphy Award to bmfc1.
  7. I always believed George Vass was anti-Met.
  8. “Roger Dean Stadium during Marlins game” is spiritual descendant of Yakov Smirnoff's “in Russia...”

  11. From the SI Vault: biting Frank Deford profile of the city of Baltimore, blended with an admiring profile of the Baltimore Orioles, from 1971. Featuring Frank Cashen as the kind of GM the Mets might want to hire somewhere down the road. Walking-around money is so tight in Baltimore that the fact that the Colts played two extra playoff games at home is a direct reason why, months later, Oriole ticket sales for '71 were still lagging behind the not exactly torrid pace of 1970. Yet, if limited finances help account for poor attendance, Baltimoreans have picked up the cry as a convenient cop-out. The citizens there are proficient at inertia. They have backup reasons for not doing things they never intended to do anyway. Complaints about traffic, parking and Memorial Stadium (there is little cover, many concrete poles, few chair-back seats, and not a single toilet seat in the place) are repeated ad infinitum. Crabtowners have the nerve to call up the Orioles, and for some slight—a favorite player farmed out, perhaps—threaten that they will stop listening to the games on the radio. Everybody in Baltimore excuses Oriole attendance because the community is so mad for the beach (or "shore," as it is known in those precincts, as in "C'mon down the shore next Chuesday, and we'll tip a coupla Bohs"). To hear Oriole officials tell it, it would seem as if Baltimore is the only city in the country where swimming and summer vacations are in vogue. Says a local reporter: "It was sad to hear Cashen and Dalton explaining how come we didn't even come close to selling out for the last game of the World Series. They were going on all about the weather, TV, the entertainment dollar—all like it was a bad gate with the Indians in the middle of July, not the final game of the World Series." https://vault.si.com/vault/1971/04/12/best-damn-team-in-baseballhttps://vault.si.com/vault/1971/04/12/best-damn-team-in-baseball
  12. Every offseason there's some Met whose name will come up like a month in and I realize I haven't thought of that guy since the season ended. Thanks to this valuable thread connecting us to where we just were, Eduardo Nuñez qualifies as the 2020 Spring Training version of such a Met in these unusual circumstances.
  13. Logistics and branding be damned, it should have been the Jim Berm bar.
  14. Jimmy Wynn, the Toy Cannon, 78.
  15. “Florida in the house,” Sunshine State Mets by birth edition: 1) Doc Gooden 2) Jacob deGrom 3) Howard Johnson 4) Daniel Murphy 5) Wayne Garrett 6) Pete Alonso 7) Dave Magadan 8) Ed Charles 9) Mike Hampton 10) Lenny Harris (h/t UMDB)
  16. Jay's always amiable alumni podcast features Howie Rose this week. Except for the part where Howie looks forward to Opening Day on March 26, it is gold.
  17. Sewald, Zamora optioned to Syracuse.
  18. Bill Bartholomay, Braves owner who took the franchise from Milwaukee and planted it in Atlanta, 91. https://www.ajc.com/sports/baseball/former-braves-owner-bill-bartholomay-who-moved-team-atlanta-dies/B43tnVnOAgQbjNhi3ptEGN/https://www.ajc.com/sports/baseball/former-braves-owner-bill-bartholomay-who-moved-team-atlanta-dies/B43tnVnOAgQbjNhi3ptEGN/

  20. By my calculations, the Mets have won 54 games that qualify as Openers in the Season, Home or Split Season sense. Read about each of them http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2020/03/20/every-mets-opening-win-ranked/here. By everybody's calculations, Pete Alonso of the Mets hit 53 home runs in 2019. Relive each of them as they happened through the magic of words http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2020/03/25/for-petes-sake/here. Looking forward to the Mets' 55th Opening-type win and Alonso's 54th career homer whenever they can be arranged.
  21. The Original Opener was scheduled for the day (night, too, I think) before but was rained out, so this was just the second date of the year.
  22. It was a night game. The leaping Mets is from the PG.
  23. First a global pandemic, now this.
