  1. Heredia ended 2020 with 15. To take it from Beltran and hold off Tebow indicates uncommon determination.
  2. Spring Training numerology here.
  3. The highest point in St. Petersburg will now be Rich Hill, who is signing with the Rays.
  4. Asdrizona! Cabrera signs with the Diamondbacks.
  5. Proprietary FAFIF research indicates Shreve and Rick Porcello are the first certified One-Year Wonders -- joined the club, made the Opening Day roster, never went off the active roster, then departed the premises after that one and only season -- since Alejandro De Aza in 2016. A little easier to earn the distinction when the One Year has only 60 games, but MLB had a World Series in 2020, so whatever.
  6. Joe Panik returns to the Blue Jays. All is calm in Ontario.
  7. Did we miss Sewald going to Seattle? It happened on January 7. Paul's first MLB win came after three seasons, a thousand or so demotions/callups and fourteen losses. He has one more win than the rest of us, unless Ron Taylor is lurking, in which case, one more win than most of the rest of us.
  8. While the Tampa Bay Bucs were winning the Super Bowl on February 7, Chasen Shreve chose said Sunday to stow away with the Bucs of Pittsburgh. A pretty good lefty out of the pen who didn't make me cringe upon his entrance. Seemed to start running out of magic late in the short season, so, you know, good luck as a Pirate.
  9. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I thought his name was cool. Like an avant-garde jazz musician... Every mention of “Ali Sanchez” put me in mind of Ali Thomson, who also favored baseball apparel. I hummed this ditty from 1980 whenever he batted, which was mostly in Spring Training games. https://youtu.be/SP28H8-VgmIhttps://youtu.be/SP28H8-VgmI
  10. Collin McHugh reportedly about to be a Ray.
  11. Red Sox go Gonzo — Marwin Gonzalez, that is (one year).
  12. Jake Marisnick is Cubs-bound. Jake from State Farm had about as much impact on 2020 Met fortunes. Two Met homers: one at MFYS III (always appreciated), one vs the O's at Citi Field, which I heard in the car shortly after turning on the game and was impressed by the raucous crowd reaction before remembering, oh, right, there's nobody there.
  13. The White Sox invite Matt Reynolds to Spring Training.
  14. DFAs aren't necessary shut-the-suitcase, forward-the-mail goodbyes, even if they don't bode well for future Mets clubhouse occupancy; sometimes they're just paperwork and the player remains in the organization. “Signed a deal with the...” means the player is gone and ripe for remembering. Corey Oswalt may not be through making memories in a Mets uniform.
  15. Sanchez DFA'd for Khalil Lee.
  16. Also giving up that player who doesn't have a name, but will later.
  17. Almora signing official; Corey Oswalt DFA'd.
  18. Billy C.
  19. A's sign to a minor league contract the Met who barely was. He got a nice if ironic hand when he finally batted in September 2019.
  20. Tyson might want to think twice about being photographed with a guy who strikes out so much. Not good for the champ's image.
  21. Strong Mets vibe in Edward Burns's new Epix series Bridge and Tunnel set in 1980 Valley Stream. Burns, who also plays the father of Jimmy (Sam Vartholomeos), an aspiring photographer, includes plenty of period flourishes. A poster of the Mets fan favorite Rusty Staub can be glimpsed on the wall of Jimmy's childhood room, and Burns lent his own vintage 1960s Mets jersey to Brian Muller, who plays Pags. A little Bob Murphy play-by-play is audible as well. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/arts/television/edward-burns-bridge-and-tunnel.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/arts/television/edward-burns-bridge-and-tunnel.html In the third episode, Burns as a dad who hasn't given up post-1977 (unlike his apparently valuesless son), says of Tom Seaver, "I swear to Christ, it breaks my heart to see him in that Cincinnati uniform."
  22. This is hucking great.
  23. Perhaps the first ball to get by Murph. Not the last. DGW was kicking photographic ass all day and night.
  24. Keon Broxton is a duplicate, a.k.a. a Twin.
  25. The Rays sign the righty reliever who wasn't Jared Hughes.
