A half a season isn't necessary for evaluation.[/quote:4b6h890u] i don't know exactly how much time is needed but more is better and livan servees no purpose on a team going nowhere bmfc1 Jul 18 2009 08:30 PM Niese with a complete game (7 innings) shut out tonight. Figueroa, too. Niese should have the start on Monday. Edgy DC Jul 18 2009 08:37 PM If it's reasonably decided that he's the better bet for the team the rest of the season, than bring him to New York. Else, I don't know why it's so important to explicitly throw in the towel sooner, rather than later. If you think that the Mets have a chance, then you call Niese up because he's pitching great and Livan is not. Either way, Niese now. smg58 Jul 19 2009 07:22 AM Before his last two starts, Livan had some trade value. A good outing or two before the deadline might restore some of that value, and even a borderline prospect would probably be worth waiting till the end of the month to see Niese. Of course, if Livan blows up again in his next start, it's a moot point. metirish Jul 19 2009 08:04 AM Oh it would be borderline alright..... Well, that's what I said in my first sentence. The throwing in the towel phrase was deliberately prefixed with an "Else." If good judgement says he's the better Met down the stretch, sure, call on him. Edgy DC Jul 19 2009 04:39 PM We suddenly have an opening. MFS62 Jul 20 2009 06:54 AM Apparently, Manuel isn't all that enthusiastic about bringing Niese up. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2009/07/braves-7-mets-1-nieve-to-niese.html#ixzz0LlrJ6kH1 Later metirish Jul 20 2009 07:13 AM I don't see what you mean by that...I think Manuel might be trying to temper expectations .As Rubin noted Jerry has all but named Niese the starter for Saturday. bmfc1 Jul 20 2009 07:17 AM Those quotes came before the game. He had to change course after the Nieve injury.
  2. The Mets season isn't looking good. Livan Hernandez has struggled lately and is certainly not part of next year's plan. Jonathan Niese might be part of next year's plan. We need to find out, and I say the time is NOW while he is red hot in the minors, don't wait for him to potentially slump, give him the best shot at success by letting him take Livan's starts against the lowly Nationals and Astros next week while he himself is on fire! his last few starts: 7/11: 6ip, 8h, 1r, 1bb, 5k 7/5: 9, 5, 0, 2, 10 6/30: 8, 5, 2, 1, 4 6/25: 6, 6, 1, 2, 6 6/20: 7, 6, 0, 1, 8 6/12: 7.1, 2, 0, 3, 7 thats six starts with 43 1/3 innings, 32 hits, 4 runs, 10 walks, and 40 strikeouts. NOW is the time! gotta find something to try and get excited about here
  3. i think his ERA shot up too much, he might have been usable bait a month ago, but i think all the GMs had to have the same idea that most of us did that it would all come crashing down eventually.
  4. ]Everyone who they could trade to "stock the farm" is hurt. They can't get anything farm stocking worthy for the guys that most of us would be willing to unload. i'm not asking for good prospects, i'm just pointing out some teams that could use guys that we probably wont bring back next year anyway. all i'd want in return is a "project" guy. i dont have time now but i'm sure you could go back and find the equivalent of this year's Sheffield/Schneider getting dealt for something usable.
  5. if you want a Schneider suitor in contention i'd think your best bet is Tampa Bay where Dioner Navarro makes Schneid look positively Ruthian.
  6. ]Sheffield would be an ideal candidate for anyone needing an offensive boost (Sox? Giants?), but the same stuff that brought him here (sentiment) is going to make him a gargantuan headache to move. i dont think sheff is worth much to anyone even though hes hit fir the mets, if he goes anywhere i'd have to think its an AL team that needs a DH. looking at the AL contenders: -the Angels just lost Hunter AND Guerrero to the DL -The D-Rays could easily give up on Pat "no more bat" Burrell, -the Twinkies could put Kubel in the outfield and bench Gomez who sucks but they'd have to be willing to play Span or Cuddyer in CF (Delmon Young has sucked too but you'd have to assume a now healthy Span os replacing him) -the White Soc have both Podsednik and Anderson sucking it up, since either one can play CF that would make room for Sheff in a corner spot, but no DH as Thome plays there (with a resurgent Konerko at 1st), is Quentin healthy yet? -the team that could maybe use him the most is probably the one place he'd never end up, because they have Magglio Ordonez putting up an atrocious 74 ops+ but they already released Shef this year -the Mariners are getting no production in LF and very little from Griffey at DH (but the fans are so happy to see him back that he wont get benched), they could probably play Sheff and Griff at LF/DH keeping them bth rested -The Yankees, Red Sox, and Rangers would imo only use him as a bench guy, and thats all the AL teams over .500 so there might be destinations for him if the Mets want to deal him for a project (you wont get a good prospect), probably someone along the lines of Royce Ring when they got him, a fireballer who hasnt gotten it together
  7. ="Vic Sage"]But don't youse get it... Cora is a leader! He makes me nostalgic for miguel cairo. he makes me miss Rey Ordonez, at least I knew he was helping on one side of the ball (even if he was the WORST every day player in the league.)

  9. I'll take berroa as "change for the sake of change" at this point, cora is terrible, and maybe jerry wouldnt bat berroa leadoff whuch would help the team by itself.
  10. Prado fell on his face! that was gonna be 2 out right?
  11. isnt Ray Romano one of ours too?
  12. ]Will the Mets put one and one together and bring out Tom Terrific, who will be 68 that summer, in a big way? Or will it become another platform for the Mets and MLB to celebrate the legacy of Jackie Robinson? i think we both know the answer to that where Wilpon is involved.

    SHaM Poll

I'm calling a 30-45 record the rest of the way. Delgado and Beltran don't get back until MID-august and neither is as productive as they had been last year or the beginning of this year. Reyes comes back Aug. 1st but gets shut down September 10th when the Mets are finally ready to concede that they are dead. Maine makes it back for a few starts in late August but also gets shut down. The bright spot of the second half turns out to be Brad Holt, called up to make 5 starts in September where he looks like gold.

  16. I didn't hear him (I didn't know he'd be in the booth ahead of time and didn't care about the all-star game enough to torture myself with Joe Buck) but if he talked baseball I'd be curious hear the replay (I'm sure MLB network has nothing better to do than show the all-star game 14 times in the next 7 days)
  17. IMDB lists Jessica Biel (she was in 7th Heaven and nothing else I've heard of) as being in the upcoming Thor movie as well.
  18. ]Loved the White Sox jacket. Not the Cardinals, not an All-Star logo. I'm sure he could have borrowed a Cardinals jacket from Hillary if he'd wanted one, she still has all 30 teams from her campaign.

Basketball and football fans need to put aside their GM-with-a-top-pick fetish fantasies and realize that they're just fans, all they can do is root, and the game in front of them may be the last game they ever see. Wishing after the fact that they'd done a little poorer, especially in a salary-cap league where building through the draft is essential, is quite another. A meaningless, ugly Week 17 win in 2007 cost my Jets 3-4 draft slots-- slots in which stud QB Matt Ryan, explosive RB Darren McFadden, and promising DT Glenn Dorsey were taken (two were need areas for the Jets heading into the season). Baseball-wise, it's different, of course. Edgy DC Jul 15 2009 11:37 AM They ought to reverse the draft order and kill this debate once and for all. Make it winner's ball. G-Fafif Jul 15 2009 02:35 PM I rooted for Padres emergency closer Jesse Orosco to retire transient Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar with the game literally on the line in 2003 because Orosco deserved one more save at Shea and Alomar had earned my disgust for more than a year. It being 2003, I somehow knew, even though it was early in the season, it wasn't going to be the one game that cost us a playoff spot. 24. Brandon Inge hits ZERO in the first round. I guess he's wishing he'd declined the invitation right about now. an ESPN.com poll says the nation prefers the Home Run Derby to the Slam Dunk Contest 53-47, with only CA, KY, NC, OR, UT, and WY favoring basketball's show the international results may have prevented a big blowout, the 4,000 international voters went 57-43 for basketball. idiots.
