  1. I just did a quick search of the official rules (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2013/official_baseball_rules.pdf) and didn't see anything about this. I'm going to say that I think the umpires were wrong here. I think, as Edgy said, the arm signal is just a message to the bullpen coach, not an official gesture. The manager, when he gets to the mound, would, I assume, verbally say to the umpire, "I'm bringing in Smith to pitch, and he'll replace Jones in the ninth position in the batting order." That's when it would become official. Seattle and Thompson should have filed a protest. (If they didn't, that is.) Or maybe Thompson didn't know about doing that, either. Too bad "Hal the Referee" is dead at the present time.
  2. I never thought it was official either. (And I wouldn't be shocked if the umpire got it wrong here.)
  3. I think I'd rather see D.J. Mitchell at first base for the Mets than Ike Davis.
  4. who is not related to former New York Mets outfielder Lenny Dykstra. That might be the best thing about him! I too wonder why he's stagnated in Double A. He turned 26 in May; maybe the organization is thinking his numbers are skewed because he has more experience than his competition? Dykstra does seem to deserve a shot at Triple A. Who's playing first for Las Vegas? If the Vegas guy, whoever he is, isn't a viable alternative to Ike Davis (something the Mets desperately need) then Dykstra should certainly move up.
  5. Voting for Wednesday night's loss in Miami will close on Monday morning, some time after 10 a.m. This will close out the month of July, so stay tuned for the Players of the Month announcement. Schaefer POTG 7/31/13 - Marlins 3, Mets 2
  6. The next time the Mets win a game (unless, that is, we're in the early stages of a job-killing losing streak) Terry Collins will become the ninth Mets manager to win 200 games. Six wins will put him ahead of Jerry Manuel and in sole possession of eighth place on the Mets all-time list. With 56 games remaining, the Mets will have to go 31-25 (a .554 winning percentage) for Terry to pass Dallas Green this season. If he does come back next season, he'll have a shot at passing Willie Randolph and moving into fourth place. (And I wouldn't have guessed that Willie Randolph was in fourth place.) WINS BY A METS MANAGER Davey Johnson 595 Bobby Valentine 536 Gil Hodges 339 Willie Randolph 302 Yogi Berra 292 Joe Torre 286 Dallas Green 229 Jerry Manuel 204 Terry Collins 199
  7. Box score Harvey 1 Turner 1 Lagares 1 Germen 1.25 Atchison 0.25
  8. Byrd has received plenty of Schaefer points this year. He's among the team leaders and has a real shot at winning the coveted Player of the Year award.
  9. That sounds like a plan.
  10. Mejia 2 Rice 1 Torres 1 Davis 1 Byrd 1 Young 0.5
  11. You claim an "adoptee", don't post any updates, and then pat yourself on the back when they make the big leagues. Is that how this is supposed to work?

  13. He probably left because you've been ignoring him for seven months.
  14. But, perhaps tellingly, Bobby Parnell is not in the starting lineup.
  15. The total of 0.02 points awarded to Anthony Recker averaged down to zero, so he does not appear among the results.

  17. Maybe he should change his name to "Stormy".
  18. I too think they'll stand pat, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if a guy like Hefner got dealt, or maybe even Gee.

  20. Voting for Monday night's win in Miami will close on Thursday afternoon, some time after 2 p.m. This game, too, is light on votes. Schaefer POTG 7/29/13 - Mets 6, Marlins 5
