  1. I can accept that a player wants to have his little settling in routine as he steps up to the plate. But if he's doing that dance between pitches as well, then too bad for him. He should have to learn a shorter routine. Maybe after the pitch, touch the bat to the ground, take a deep breath, and then resume the stance.
  2. For some reason, I still remember a five-game series in Philadelphia in late June of 1982, where the Phillies won all five games. I had thought that that series included a walk-off grand slam by Bo Diaz off Neil Allen, but that game, it turns out, was played in April 1983.
  3. Voting for the four games listed below will close on Friday morning, some time after 10 a.m. All four games are rather lightly voted, so if you care to vote and haven't, please try to do so today. Schaefer PotG, 5/24/2014: 'Backs 3, Mets 2 Schaefer POTG 5/25/14 (Game 1) - Diamondbacks 2, Mets 1 Schaefer POTG 5/25/14 (Game 2) - Mets 4, Diamondbacks 2 Schaefer POTG, 5/26/2014: Pirates 5 Mets 3
  4. Colon 5 Duda 1.3 Familia 1 Wright 2.7
  5. Outs on the basepaths provide players with a much-needed chance to catch their breath before they take the field again in the next half inning.
  6. Oooh! A campaign! I can just see the commercials. A black-and-white closeup of a ballplayer, as ominous music plays. Voice: Bill Smith wants to be an All-Star third baseman. But he was 0 for 12 in last year's Division Series. And he's made FOUR throwing errors in the last month. Call Bill Smith and tell him he's WRONG for the All-Star team!
  7. They should totally fire the second-base coach.
  8. Who came up with the elitist notion to limit it to season ticket holders? Terrible idea! I think coming up with a foolproof way to ensure one fan-one vote is probably a lot more trouble than it's worth. But the idea of making it hard to vote more than once seems to make sense. Instead of 25 votes per IP address, why not one vote per IP address? Maybe you could make fans register to vote, with an MLB ID that's linked to their e-mail address. Sure, some people will vote more than once, but very few will vote 100 or more times. I have to say, though, that I really don't care at all about any of this! Maybe that would make me a bad commissioner, but I've already publicly endorsed G-Fafif.
  9. Looks like Travis isn't back yet.
  10. I had been wondering what ever happened to Pedro. I don't recall hearing anything about the Mets cutting ties with him, and yet he was in the picture in 2013 but not in 2014.
  11. Niese 2 Black 1.1 Mejia 1.5 Lagares 2 Abreu 1 Murphy 1 Granderson 0.4 Tejada 1
  12. Voting for last Thursday's win over the Dodgers will close on Thursday morning, some time after 10 a.m. Only four votes for this game so far, (a very low total for a game that the Mets won) but the voting will close nonetheless. Schaefer PotG, 5/22/2014: Mets 5, Dodgers 3
  13. If deGrom keeps hitting, will there be an outcry to have him start four of five games at shortstop?
  14. And while fans will crank up their interest when their team contends, as Ceetar suggests, there's still the issue of watching games that your team isn't involved in. Fans have become much less likely to watch a playoff or World Series game if their favorite team isn't playing. (That stupid "do your duty Judy" campaign a few years ago was MLB's way of acknowledging this.) I think that if World Series games ended by 10:30 Eastern Time, a greater number of casual fans would be inclined to watch. But why start watching a game if you know you don't care enough to stay up until 11:30, and you have to get up for work in the morning? I haven't watched a World Series game that didn't involve the Mets since 1993! (That's right; in the last 21 years I've only watched five World Series games.) I may be a minority here on this forum, but I think a lot more of the general public has fallen into this pattern.
  15. Yeah, the Quicksilver scene was great. It will be interesting to compare this Quicksilver with the one we'll be seeing in Avengers Age of Ultron next year. X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST SPOILER ALERT =#FFBF00]The events of X3 were definitely erased, but it's also possible that X1 and X2 were retconned as well. I guess we're unlikely to ever know for sure. This movie seemed like the happily-ever-after for the group of X-Men that we met in the 2000 movie except, of course, for Wolverine, who, since he exists in both time periods, can easily be integrated with the "First Class" group.
  16. I'm also Synderskeptical. I guess I'm Synderfatalistic too. It seems like Tommy John surgery is becoming a rite of passage for pitchers. Maybe it's better for Noah to have it now (if it's actually necessary, of course) rather than after his big league career has started.

  20. Voting for last Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers will close on Wednesday morning, some time after 10 a.m. Only five votes for this game so far, but the voting will close regardless. Schaefer POTG, 5/21/2014: Dodgers 4 Mets 3
  21. There was no question that he had to go. Maybe the Mets stuck with him for so long in the increasingly vain hope that he'd be this year's LaTroy Hawkins.
  22. I'm really tired of Jose Valverde.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: I don't know if and when we'll find out if the overturn is based on interference or a simple reversal. Strange that Keith and Gary don't see that the hand seemed to be in there. I was thinking that too. It looked like Lagares' hand may have reached under the catcher's leg and tapped the plate before the glove came down on his back. I hope we find out on what basis the call was overturned.
