But the only chapter I'd have any interest in at all. Of course, there's no way in hell I would read that book!

Maybe if you take out the second half of the season, those historical numbers (post 2008) are even higher --- which would mask the fact that voting might be down. You made me curious, so I ran the numbers. They represent the average number of voters per game, by month. 200620072008200920102011201220132014April21.2914.5013.4016.6712.5712.3011.5711.369.56May15.6115.9610.9313.0410.1011.899.618.787.77June13.1511.309.4311.8910.2711.048.828.04July11.7211.0711.048.359.5810.337.088.04August10.2512.2910.766.837.439.006.396.34September8.5210.648.846.895.817.715.745.36 We're off to our worst start ever. I'm glad I don't put a whole lot of effort into this, but I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth the little bit of effort that it does take. Maybe I shouldn't have looked at these numbers!

He'll probably be some barely-hanging-on veteran. My guess is that number 1000 will be a 39-year-old relief pitcher.

I had to dip into the database tables to break that tie between Dillon Gee and David Wright, and while doing so I noticed that some games in 2006 had as many as 35 voters participating! Given our typical vote count this year, that was kind of discouraging, but then I ran some numbers... Average number of Schaefer voters per game, by year. [list:wzgul28t] 2006 13.1914 2007 12.5988 2008 10.8025 2009 10.3086 2010 9.1420 2011 10.3704 2012 8.0617 2013 7.9074 2014 9.1351[/list:u:wzgul28t] We're only down by fewer than two voters since 2008, so it's really not all that much of a drop. But it does seem like the pool of non-voters has dropped dramatically. Maybe as an experiment we can have a game where we ask EVERYONE to vote, just to see how high the number can get.

I don't think that herding cats would be all that difficult to do. All you need to do is walk around with an open can of tuna. That might work on baseball fans, too. As long as the tuna can had a little MLB hologram on it to certify its authenticity.

Travis, if he goes on the DL, would likely go on the special seven-day "concussion" DL.

Of course, this story won't really be over until the Mets leak nasty comments about him.
