  1. I guess we'll see if the Mets go after Eric Hosmer this offseason, as some have suggested. I agree that Smith isn't going to be displaced at first by someone like Wilmer Flores, unless Smith fails spectacularly. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Mets saw first base as a position that they could upgrade this winter. It may or may not happen, but I definitely don't think it's Smith "for better or worse."
  2. Can you imagine the reaction if the outfielder the Mets sign is Bruce, and the infielder is Walker? The fan base would freak. It would look like the Mets were reassembling last year's 92-loss team.

  4. That's quite a dropoff in salary between numbers 1 and 2. I might be willing to concede that a closer could be worth $13 million, but $21 million seems like money that could be spent better elsewhere.
  5. I think they'll be able to afford a seventh coach if David Wright retires.
  6. You would think so. I'm wondering if perhaps Roessler is being considered for a promotion from assistant hitting instructor to hitting instructor.
  7. Centerfield wrote: Wade Davis will cost about 4 years, $75-80 million. Really??? I'm not disputing you, just expressing surprise. I guess I don't pay that much attention to salaries. Are relief pitchers really getting in the neighborhood of $20 million per year?
  8. From The Daily News: Mets assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler finalizing two-year deal with team: sources From Newsday: Kevin Long unlikely to return as Mets’ hitting coach, source says

Vic Sage wrote: The focus should be on 1) a solid mid-rotation starter we can pencil in for 200 ip; 2) another closer to pair with familia; 3) solid bats at least at 2 of following 5 positions: 2b or 3b (with Cabrera at the other spot), Cf or Rf (with Conforto at the other spot) and C, with at least one of the bats being of the contact/ob%/ top-of-the-order variety. This is pretty much what I've been thinking too. I suspect that they'll let d'Arnaud and Plawecki compete for time behind the plate, but an upgrade, if they can do it, should be on the table. But I would like to see them import an infielder and an outfielder and hopefully they won't both be sluggers who strike out 150 times per season.
  10. Farting backwards is easy. Guys who can fart forwards are always in demand.
  11. It's a little discouraging that the organization is considered to be low on "blue chips", but that can change over the next 12 months as some of these guys play more and, hopefully, improve. The main negative for the short term is that the Mets aren't considered likely to be able to call up an impact player during the 2018 season. With luck, they won't need one, and maybe things will look brighter in the farm system going into 2019. I imagine that the quality of a farm system is pretty volatile, with players coming and going, progressing and regressing.
  12. Yeah, Cleveland would have been much easier to root for. Maybe next year, as long as they're not playing the Mets.
  13. That tingle of excitement you feel in the atmosphere... that buzz you hear at the water cooler... It's all because the Tabloid Cover Derby is just one week away! Be sure to check in next Monday when the first poll will be posted.
  14. I don't think I was aware of that. I had a friend in high school who had something like that around one of his ankles. It was a fairly large area, the shape of a marble pattern. He said that it was the result of a broken ankle he had years before. Even in summer, when the rest of his leg had a deep tan, there was this pale streak around the ankle.
  15. I didn't realize that The Lockhorns were still extant.
  16. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2017/10/jason_bere_passed_over_as_clev.html Jason Bere, passed over as Cleveland Indians' pitching coach, could interview with Mets Cleveland.com wrote: CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Indians did not consider Jason Bere as a replacement for pitching coach Mickey Callaway, which may have led to his surprising departure from the team's coaching staff. Bere, 46, just finished his third year as the team's bullpen coach. Previously, he spent nine years as a special assistant to the Indians' baseball operations department scouting, evaluating and instructing the organization's pitchers. Bere reportedly was not considered for the pitching coach job. He was told the Indians were "moving in a different direction." Bere reportedly has been in contact with Callaway and could interview to be the Mets pitching coach.
  17. Okay, I found the video. http://www.totalprosports.com/2017/10/27/astros-yuli-gurriel-appears-to-mock-yu-darvish-with-racist-gesture-during-world-series-video/ It keeps looping, with a voice (sounds like Bob Costas?) saying over and over again "and that's the guilty party". Was the gesture mentioned at all during the telecast? Or is it something that caught fire with online commentary?
  18. Any suspension would likely be served in April, because of the right to appeal. I haven't seen this incident. I'll have to look for a clip online.
  19. I don't know... I wasn't around in the 1940s, so I can't be sure, but Laraine Day doesn't seem like she was a "major star". She certainly wasn't nearly at the level of Ingrid Bergman, Barbara Stanwyck, Lana Turner, Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, etc. She married Leo in 1948, when he was the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers and had received a year-long suspension. Laraine may have been more famous than Leo in 1940, but by 1948 I would guess that more people knew Leo. But like I said, I wasn't around then, so this is just conjecture.
  20. I may not be remembering correctly, but I think Reynolds was on the 2015 NLCS roster, but not on the World Series roster because Uribe was activated. Unless Uribe displaced someone else...
  21. I get the impression that their fame (or infamy) was a tandem deal.
  22. I think I'd reverse 2000, only because of the opponent. I'm not sure that 2015 would mean the most to your kids. (It would mean more than 2000 would, of course, but perhaps not more than 2023 would. Or will.) I was 10 in 1973, but I don't think a win in that Series would have meant as much to me as 1986 did, when I was 23. At that age, I was old enough to appreciate how special it was, but young enough to have it mean the world to me.
  23. I'd also like to buy back those last two games in Oakland in 1973.
