  1. That's what I was thinking; Vargas may end up in the bullpen.
  2. She also reports that for a two-team deal with the Marlins for Realmuto, the Mets don't want to include Rosario and the Marlins are "intrigued by the prospect of acquiring Nimmo."
  3. Kristie Ackert reporting that it was the Marlins who "aggressively shot down the idea of a three-team deal that would bring All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to Flushing and send Noah Syndergaard to the Bronx." If true, I'd interpret this to mean that Miami didn't like the package that the Yankees would have sent to Miami, and now they're looking to the Padres to come up with a package that the Marlins would like.
  4. Please pull whatever strings you can pull to get invited to the upcoming Jeurys Familia press conference. Once there, push your way to the front of the room, throwing as many elbows as you deem necessary, and confront the pitcher directly. "Señor Familia, please let us know how to pronounce your first name." Last night on Mets Hot Stove, Steve Gelbs and Gary Apple said "Jay-or-Reese". (They're probably scared shitless to defy Gary Cohen.) Nelson Figueroa called him "Jore-reese", and Adam Fisher said "Zhoris". (Rhymes with Boris, but the first consonant sounds like the Zs in "Zsa Zsa" or the J in "Jean Valjean" if you pronounce it all Frenchy.) Anthony Recker avoided saying the name entirely. I recall Sandy Alderson saying "Joris" and Daniel Murphy saying "Yoris". I believe it's "Yoris" but this needs to be settled!
  5. Last night on Mets Hot Stove, Anthony Recker was part of the panel in the New York studio.
  6. It's Cape Town, South Africa.
  7. This was a battle between a cover for the end of David Wright's career vs. one for the end of Yoenis Cespedes' season. The look on Yoenis' face tells the story of the outcome. Cespedes, featured on the winning covers of the 2015 and 2016 Derbies, is still alive in this one, however, with Newsday's SUCCESS cover. A WRIGHT TO REMEMBER, meanwhile, will advance to the third round and will face Amed Rosario and the Daily News' WHAT THE BLANK!
  8. Winner of Round 1.11 SWEEP SNAKES New York Post, May 21, 2018. Amed Rosario hits two homers and Asdrubal Cabrera hits one too as the Mets complete a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. Winner of Round 1.06 TODD COUPLE! New York Daily News, April 14, 2018. The Mets reach the apex of their season, as two homers from Todd Frazier bring the team's record to 11 and 1.
  9. If the Mets eventually get Realmuto I nominate, for his nickname, "Jeweled Squid". (For my nickname methodology, read the article linked above.) A guy I work with told me that Realmuto can't be that good, because he went to a Marlins game last year and somebody else was catching.
  10. Is that really a three-team trade? It looks more like the Mariners made two separate trades today, one with Cleveland and one with Tampa.
  11. New York Post wrote: According to reports, including by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Mets have talked to the Padres about a potential deal that would include Realmuto going to Queens, Syndergaard to San Diego and Padres prospects to the Marlins. Padres emerge in Mets’ possible Syndergaard, Realmuto 3-way trade And according to reports as the winter meetings finished up in Las Vegas on Thursday, this potential Mets, San Diego and Miami swap is also not close, but again shows the Mets’ strong desire to find a way to get Realmuto, whom they have coveted since last offseason. Any deal that comes down to, from the Mets perspective, Syndergaard for Realmuto, really doesn't make sense. I would think that someone from the Padres would have to come to the Mets too. Hopefully this is just another dead end.
  12. If not, the Mets offer to sell him back, I think. (At a fixed price; no negotiating.) At least, that's the way it used to be. May be different now.
  13. I guess I've gotten used to Jacob's new look, because this photo looks strange to me now:
  14. Didn't Mike Bordick resign with the Orioles after he left the Mets?
  15. I'm not familiar with Taylor Rooks. It occurs to me that the only SNY programming I watch is Mets Hot Stove, and I guess he or she (I just Googled the name... she, definitely she!) hasn't appeared on that show. Todd Zeile seems to be a pretty smart guy. He was rumored to have been considered for Mickey's job last year, and I liked the idea. I don't dislike Andy Martino, but I can easily see how he can wear thin. Gelbs is okay. I wish he would talk more about the time he visited Maja in her shower.
  16. Is it not possible for him to agree to a minor-league assignment, removing him from the 40-man?
  17. I believe he is.
  18. I like that idea too, but it seems to be too outside-the-box for today's managers. I think Familia will get more than a few save opportunities. There will be days when Diaz has been used two or three days in a row and then, if he's fresh, Jay-or-reese will be the designated closer for that day.
  19. G-Fafif wrote: This deal is a bargain in that for the cost of one reliever, they receive multiple pronunciations. We now have three more years to figure this out!
  20. Apparently JAKE & RAKE doesn't have what it takes, as it loses to WHERE THERE'S A WIL. JAKE & RAKE was one of three remaining Jacob deGrom covers, all from Newsday. DeGrom now has two covers, as does today's winner, Wilmer Flores. WHERE THERE'S A WIL advances to Round Three, where it will face off next week against the Rusty Staub memorial cover "There IS crying in baseball!"
  21. Now that the Mets have two 50-save guys in their bullpen, they're guaranteed to win 100 games this year. Right?
  22. It's still three and a half months until Opening Day. The roster surely isn't set yet.
  23. Galvis looks more appealing than Hechavarria, and his name is a lot easier to spell. Both are free agents. I expect they would both want, and be able to get, more than a one-year deal. If Rosario were dealt, Galvis on a two-year deal could make sense.
  24. I know. That's why this poll is "stupid and meaningless". I'm mainly, I guess, trying to figure out which players we're most and least attached to.
  25. I voted Nimmo because I think he's probably the most replaceable. The idea of Syndergaard is completely absurd.
