  2. The minor league team that played there was the Minneapolis Millers. "Lakers" is a great name for a team from Minnesota. I'm guessing the NBA team hadn't yet vacated to Los Angeles when the Senators arrived from Washington?
  3. Elster88 wrote: When I use the interactive statistics for best yearly finish for OBP it doesn't list the year. This has been fixed. Thanks again.
  4. I'm with you on the Denver Bears. I would have named the Arizona team the Phoenix Firebirds. (That was the name of their AAA team. I think it was a Giants affiliate.) It looks like Toronto's old minor league team was called the Maple Leafs, so I can understand why they didn't stick with that.
  5. ="National Weather Service"]Tonight: A chance of rain and thunderstorms, then rain likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 10pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Cloudy, with a low around 69. South wind between 7 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Saturday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 79. Breezy, with a southeast wind 11 to 14 mph increasing to between 19 and 22 mph. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between two and three inches possible. Saturday Night: Rain likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Cloudy, with a low around 68. Windy, with a north wind between 28 and 36 mph, with gusts as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between three and four inches possible. Sunday: A slight chance of showers before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 69. Based on the above, I'm guessing we'll see a doubleheader on Sunday. Maybe they'll be able to sneak in a game tonight, otherwise this may end up as a two-game series.
  6. If I could go back in time and revise history, I would have given two of the 1969 expansion teams different names: I'd call the Montreal franchise the Royals, and the Kansas City franchise the Monarchs.

  8. Wait, this can't be right: ] Sat Oct 18 NLCS Game 6 (if necessary) NLCS Game 7 (if necessary)
  9. If, as we hope, the Mets make the playoffs and the Yankees don't, there should be less competition for the prime-time starts. (The Cubs might mess that up for us, though.)
  10. Hopefully it wouldn't be necessary. That would kind of mess up the Shea countdown though, wouldn't it? It would have to be something like 12 (or 13, if necessary). And the last regular-season game at Shea might not turn out to be the last regular-season game at Shea.
  11. And the Rays finally end that inning and win the damn thing by a score of 7 to 5. Wild Card tragic number is 16.
  12. Elster88 wrote: I like the records on the player pages. Is that new? Added about a week or so ago. Still has a few bugs though.
  13. Some guy named Piazza as well.
  14. No, he'd probably tell you that that means that Alfredo Aceves must be the next Yankee Great.
  15. I was thinking that Ottawa could be a PCL team.
  16. Rays score 5 in the second, lead the Yankees 5-0, Yankees batting in the top of the third.
  17. Farmer Ted wrote: Would still like the Mets to cut through the muckety red tape and move the AAA team to Brooklyn and add 5,000 more seats. If I lived in Brooklyn, or anywhere really, I'd rather have a AA team near me than a AAA. Double A has prospects, Triple A has a lot of retreads and hangers-on.
  18. Wow, it's been a month since I last checked in on this thread. The numbers, not surprisingly, have gotten quite a bit better: Average wins by position in NL East: 91.8 87.6 81.8 71.1 62.8 91.9 NL East W L Pct3 Avg W Avg L Champions Wild Card Playoffs 1D Change 7D Change Mets 79 61 .541 91.5 70.5 84.69912 1.43621 86.13531 9.39107 23.34427 Phillies 76 64 .519 87.7 74.3 15.06497 3.30597 18.37093 -8.83420 -20.06348 Marlins 71 69 .481 81.9 80.1 .23592 .01853 .25445 .01222 -2.28478 Braves 60 80 .492 71.1 90.9 .00000 .00000 .00000 .00000 -0.00013 Nationals 54 86 .401 62.8 99.2 .00000 .00000 .00000 .00000 .00000 At 86%, the Mets have the third highest playoff likelihood in the NL. (Behind the Brewers and the Cubs.) The Mets are averaging 91.5 wins in the BP scenarios, very close to the goal of 92 that Marlon Anderson set way back when 92 looked impossible. The Mets can get to 90 wins by playing .500 (11 and 11) the rest of the way, but I don't think that would be a good idea. Actually, if two or three of those 11 wins come against the Phillies, then .500 could actually be good enough. A .600 pace the rest of the way will leave the Mets with 92 wins, and, very likely, a division title. The Brewers remain the most likely Wild Card (and the Mets first-round opponent) as do the Red Sox. Yankees' playoff odds are down to 1.3%.
  19. It wouldn't be inconvenient for the Astros. I bet there are a lot of Houston fans in New Orleans.
  20. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The New Orleans franchise can relocate to Ottawa, restoring baseball to that city and the Blue Jays can play there. Then the Nationals could get Buffalo. I think it wouldn't look good for Organized Baseball to abandon New Orleans, though. They probably get public relations points for staying there and being part of the recovery. But that doesn't make it any better for the team that ends up stuck there.
  21. I wonder who's going to lose the musical chairs game and end up in New Orleans? Cleveland appears headed to Columbus. Toronto looks like it will be looking for something else. (Maybe they'll get Buffalo.) Who's currently in Columbus? Is it Washington? I bet they get New Orleans.
  22. I do still covet Casey Hodges.
  23. ="metsguyinmichigan":7z222jrr]Those "imagined" cards of my youth are just spectacular![/quote:7z222jrr] Thanks. I was just now (after I read your post) imagining in my head what the reverse sides of those cards would look like, and it actually caused me to smell bubble gum!
  24. Voting for Tuesday night's 10-inning win in Milwaukee will close on Friday. Schaefer POTG 9/2/08 - Mets 6, Brewers 5 (10 Innings)
  25. I think that's one of the giant moths that infest the Tropicana Dome. EDIT: I'm glad to see that it wasn't a screwup on my part: the black thing, whatever it is, is on the original photo: http://www.patchristin.com/StokesCA.jpg
