If that happens I'll get something additional!

I just made a purchase from the vultures who are taking apart Shea Stadium. The front staircase in my house is going to have, hanging above it, a sign directing visitors up to the Loge level. Those going down the stairs will be directed to the Gate B exit. I think this will be much cooler than a pair of stadium seats! I was told that they have to have Shea emptied of all removable parts by this coming Monday. At that point everything will be carted to their warehouse in New Jersey and shipped from there. I should have my sign by the end of October or early November. They couldn't tell me the shipping fee. I'll have to just hope it's not too much. I thought about it and decided that I'd be more likely to regret NOT getting a piece of Shea Stadium than I would be to regret spending the money. The sign will cost about as much as a few nights in a hotel room when we're on vacation. ($500) I'm guessing the shipping will be about another $100 more.

The Family Restroom sign from the Upper Deck (I peed in that room just a few weeks ago!) started bidding at $25 and now it's at $185. And there's nothing "Shea" or "Mets" about it. If it had a picture of Mr. Met taking a leak in a urinal, then it wouldn't be quite as bad. I may yet splurge on something. Depends on how irrational I decide to allow myself to be.

ALCS Rooting interest poll: Rays-Red Sox
Benjamin Grimm replied to stevejrogers's topic in New York Mets Talk
Oh, by the way G-Fafif, your name, I think, was mentioned in a UMDB memory that I posted yesterday. (http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/memrecent.php?tabno=4) If you'd like me to edit your name out of that post just let me know and I'll be glad to do it. -
Good question. A Willie Mays Mets jersey ought to be from 1973. Of course, Willie was a coach with the team in 1978. (I don't remember, though, was he with the team full time or just in spring training?) His time with the Mets ended when he and Mickey Mantle were banned from baseball because they had some kind of promotional jobs with a casino in Atlantic City. When the ban was eventually lifted, Willie reconnected with the San Francisco Giants and hasn't been involved at all with the Mets until last Sunday.

ALCS Rooting interest poll: Rays-Red Sox
Benjamin Grimm replied to stevejrogers's topic in New York Mets Talk
I'm not making any effort to avoid the playoffs, I'm just not inclined to watch them. I remember being glued to the postseason games because I enjoyed seeing baseball's historic moments as they happened: the homers by Kirk Gibson and Joe Carter, Jack Morris' gem against the Braves for the Twins, Leon Durham's error, that fantastic NLCS between the Phillies and the Astros in 1980. But now, if these big things happen, I not only don't see them, I probably don't even find out about them. And I'm okay with that. -
I had a huge lump in my throat. Those idiots in the media who said "nobody cares that Shea Stadium is going away" had no idea what they were talking about. I wish I had been there for that. (My daughter, as she was watching with me, said she wanted to get in a plane and get there before it finished. She didn't even know who all those old men were, but she could tell that something special was happening.) Very very nicely done. As I said in one other thread here somewhere, I would have only made two additions: Keith Hernandez in the batter's box as Seaver pitched to Piazza. Jerry Koosman and Jesse Orosco shaking hands on the pitcher's mound.

Is anybody considering bidding on any of the pieces of Shea that are currently being auctioned off? Me, I'm thinking I'll go as high as $1,000 for that mustard dispenser.

Who put Kingman on happy drugs? batmagadanleadoff Oct 07 2008 08:38 AM Mitchell & Ness makes a 1978 Willie Mays Mets jersey. Perhaps the company would be willing to custom make a #23 jersey in that style. Or sell you that jersey without any numbers, so that you could customize the jersey on your own. It's worth a call. soupcan Oct 07 2008 09:03 AM ="batmagadanleadoff":3rn9lbs3]It's worth a call.[/quote:3rn9lbs3] Yes it certainly is! Thanks. mario25 Oct 07 2008 09:42 AM I actually own Willie Montanez number 25 Mets game used jersey from 1979. I bought it on ebay from the seller Ball Park Heroes for 95.00. They actually bought all of the uni's from the Mets. They have a Claudell Washington jersey on Ebay now item number 220290554635. I would shoot them an email and see if they have number 23. Flynn is an awesome guy by the way...I met him at Fantasy Camp and he is a really cool dude. Good luck and anyone who has any games on vhs or dvd from 78-79 Mets or how I could get them please let me know....thanks Mario soupcan Oct 07 2008 10:54 AM Thanks mario. I'm not necessarily looking for game-used but I'll take what I can get. The Mets had some company make these things, I need to find that company while they still have the patterns accesible so they hopefully wouldn't chrage me an arm and a leg. HahnSolo Oct 07 2008 11:37 AM Soupcan, SNY on one of their shows this year did a feature on the guy who does all the stitching of the Mets uniforms, and he did mention that he did all their "special" stitching, specifically mentioning that he did the '86 20th Anniversary stitching. So my guess is that they probably did the stitching for the Shea Goodbye. Which means that they (or the Mets) had to get those Unis from somewhere. don't remember the name of the place but it is local (either Brooklyn or Queens). Why the hell would they make a Willie Mays jersey from 1978? Benjamin Grimm Oct 07 2008 01:21 PM Good question. A Willie Mays Mets jersey ought to be from 1973. Sometime thereafter, M&N became a wildly successful vintage uniform manufacturer ... particularly with the hip-hop crowd. That segment favors unreasonably large sized jerseys. M&N caters to their hip-hop customers. Hence the 4XL sizes. With respect to Russ Gompers, that would be "Stitches", in Queens. They've been lettering and numbering Mets uniforms since the early '90's. They weren't involved with the Mets when the team wore their two button pullovers. The last name lettering on some of those unis (definitely '79 and '80, maybe '81) was the most unique font the Mets ever used for their player last names. Thick, and wide, and each letter noticeably distant from the next, even on long last names. If anyone can dig up a photo of the back of Kranepool's '79 uniform, you'd see what I mean. His last name was a semi-circle, beginning and ending below his armpits. Both the "K" and the "L" were entirely sideways, 90 degrees from upright. soupcan Oct 07 2008 07:47 PM After a few emails to different sources it turns out that M&N was in fact the provider of those jerseys at the Shea ceremonies. It was just so unexpected. It almost felt like cheating. I can see those big clumsy letters arching just as you describe them. Benjamin Grimm Oct 08 2008 07:08 AM I even remember the first name I saw on the back of a Mets uniform: CHAPMAN. I think he was the second batter in the first inning, and we saw his name on his back after he singled and rounded first. soupcan Oct 08 2008 07:18 AM I remember thinking how cheap the Mets were that they used 'nameplates' rather then stitiching on each individual letter Benjamin Grimm Oct 08 2008 07:24 AM Yeah. [u:2uyf57gy] On Edit:[/u:2uyf57gy] By the way, I just noticed that the back of your Brooks jersey has mismatched number fonts. The "6" is sans serif, while the "2" is serifed. The Mets, as you said, recycled their uniforms, especially during that era. An undesirably high number like Brooks' 62 uniform would've ultimately ended up anywhere in the Mets system .. any minor league level, the instructional league, spring training. As an example --among other jerseys I own, I have the uniform that Jesse Orosco wore in his first game ever. It's a #61 uni and it was issued to Orosco temporarily because his regular #47 jersey didn't arrive in time for the Mets '79 opener. That jersey was also recycled -- there are barely visible outlines of a nameplate once affixed to that jersey after Orosco wore it. My collection is not online. It's not even on display. It's all packed up. I have a project (all in my head) to eventually display my Mets collection. One day, I might even get around to doing it. Im confused lol I thought you said you could see where the nameplate was.Interesting Mets wore this style home from 78-82 but changed the road in 82.I have a Zachary and Swan road 82 I love them.. batmagadanleadoff Dec 22 2008 01:53 PM Orosco appeared without a nameplate. And yes, it was a 1978 issue. I suppose that there wasn't enough time to affix a nameplate to Orosco's temporary game jersey. Either that, or the Mets simply didn't care about the aesthetics, knowing all along that Orosco would wear #61 only until his regular #47 arrived. Teams usually carry spare jerseys in case of unanticipated screwups. I know that the Mets do. When the team realized that Orosco's regular jersey didn't arrive in time, I suppose that he was given any old available number. Orosco was a rookie and thus, unlikely to complain about wearing such a high number. He was probably just happy to be there. The nameplate was affixed after the jersey was presumably recycled to a lower league. I was using that jersey to illustrate how Met jerseys were recycled. That jersey, like your Brooks, was worn in only one Major League game. You're right about the '82's. In 1982, the Mets changed their road unis, adding racing stripes and eliminating both the two button pullover front collar and the sleeve end piping. These elements would be added to the home unis the following season. I've been thinking of putting a Shea slideshow on the UMDB. I have a few pictures of my own of the "Shea experience" that I've taken over the last couple of years. Some with architectural details, some of fans crowding through the gates, etc. I've been meaning to ask for submissions of similar photos, and I guess this is as good a time and place as any to start. I'm more interested in "neutral" photos rather than those that feature smiling friends or family members. Some of the photos posted in this thread would be great for that. If anyone who's posted any photos objects to the pictures being used in this manner, please let me know. (I intend to specifically ask permission to use any of these before I actually do so.) A couple of weeks ago I created a prototype slide show. Take a peek if you like: http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/slidetest.php Some day there will be similar slideshows available to all visitors, and they'll have individual themes. Right now I'm slowly putting together one that will capture the events surrounding the final day at Shea Stadium.

When you paste into a spreadsheet, it seems to work better if you're coming from Internet Explorer than if you're coming from Firefox. When I paste from Firefox I paste first into a text editor and from there, copy again and paste into Excel.

NLCS Rooting interest poll: Phillies-Dodgers
Benjamin Grimm replied to stevejrogers's topic in New York Mets Talk
I've often found myself rooting for the AL team in the World Series. I have no loyalty to the National League. I root for the Mets. That doesn't affect my feelings for the other 15 teams in the league. I'm sure I'll end up rooting for the AL team this time around, except, perhaps, if it ends up Red Sox-Dodgers. -

New road uniforms w/o "New York"? Less black?
Benjamin Grimm replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
="metsguyinmichigan":1lj2lvf2] In 2009 the Mets will wear a charcoal gray road uniform with a blue Mets script, with both orange and white drop shadows for all the lettering and numerals. [/quote:1lj2lvf2] Can't judge it until I see it, but I like the sound of it. I never minded (or noticed) the drop shadow, so I really don't care if it stays or goes. metsguyinmichigan Oct 03 2008 05:53 PM The charcoal grey the Blue Jays wore was pretty dark, if I remember. Curious to see. OlerudOwned Oct 03 2008 07:41 PM Blue hats on the road! Ditch the black! Oh happy day! Fman99 Oct 03 2008 08:03 PM No surprise -- new stadium and new uniforms to sell in those new gift shops. Sounds cool, though. I look forward to buying the $25 t-shirt version of the same. John Cougar Lunchbucket Oct 03 2008 09:27 PM Yeah, it's been an open secret the Mets would make some changes to the unis next year -- this is as specific as its come, however. Away jerseys should tell the hosts what city they're from, unless they're from a "state" than all bets are off. So while I'm unhappy if they'd take away NEW YORK, which I think looks great -- I'm very intrigued over the grey adjustment, removal of black, the pop, etc etc. Thanks for passing it along! SteveJRogers Oct 03 2008 09:47 PM As one who hated those drab "Mets" grays back in the mid-late 1980s, I am intrigued to see how these will look. The Old English New York though was classic, even with the black shadow and it being used on a black jersey kind of kept a Metly tradition going that dated back to day one. Ah well, at least they aren't changing the font... uh, I hope not. No more tails or vague imitations of other team's fonts! dgwphotography Oct 04 2008 05:41 AM I have mixed feelings - I love that they are getting rid of the black, but I won't like getting rid of the old english "New York" on the away uniforms... themetfairy Oct 04 2008 06:52 AM I didn't interpret that the black would be gone - just that they'd use it less. DocTee Oct 04 2008 08:33 AM Ditto Iubitul. batmagadanleadoff Oct 04 2008 09:11 AM Re: New road uniforms w/o "New York"? Less black? I'm confused. Here it says: ="metsguyinmichigan":3uxd8oyy]Although black will remain a part of the Mets color scheme- there will be less emphasis on the color starting next season.[/quote:3uxd8oyy] But here, it says: ="metsguyinmichigan":3uxd8oyy] Instead look for a much more 'blue' Mets appearance for 2009 at home. When I asked if the Mets pinstriped home uniform would continue to be sullied with that hideous black drop shadow, I was told that there is a good chance that that will not be a part of their ensemble next season.[/quote:3uxd8oyy] The black drop shadow is the only black element on the current alternate pinstripes. Without this element, there would be no black at all on the pinstripes. And finally, here, it says: ="metsguyinmichigan":3uxd8oyy] Interestingly there is absolutely no black on this uniform whatsoever[/quote:3uxd8oyy] So will there be some black, or hopefully, no black? Or was the leaker referring to the new roads only as the blackless uniforms? Also, I suppose that the Mets could add black to a different area of the pinstripes if they really do drop the drop shadow black, while intending to retain some black. Or maybe only the caps will have black. Or maybe all new unis would be blackless but for some alternate uni that will be worn the least. In this day and age, I fully expect that there will be more than just one home and one road version of the new uni. Good riddance, I hope, to the most revolting uniforms the Mets ever wore, perhaps the most revolting uniforms in all of baseball -- for 11 seasons, no less. I still think changes, more than a sleeve patch, are coming in 2009.[/quote:gh7jdexd] I totally agree. I predict that the Mets will wear an entirely new uniform next year, overhauling the current style. The current unis are the longest running style during the Wilpon era, beating out the home pullover racing stripes (11 seasons to eight). By the way, how could that rumor starter claim the jersey pictured above to be next year's new model and simultaneously say that there wouldn't be any black in the 2009 unis? The jersey in that photo appears to be just as black, perhaps even blacker than the current black unis. I'd sure like to read that thread. Maybe the leaker was describing a different jersey. The photo above is clearly at odds with michigan's quoted description in the opening post to this thread, which states that next year's unis will have no black at all, or hardly any black. Rockin' Doc Oct 04 2008 11:40 AM Id like a more official announcement regarding the Mets 2009 uniforms before I spend too much worrying about this. The report of a bulletin board poster that "spoke with someone inside Citi Field" (like possibly a member of the construction crew?) just doesn't do much for me. SteveJRogers Oct 04 2008 11:51 AM ="batmagadanleadoff"]Did someone see that jersey in a Sporting Goods store and then assume that it was the official 2009 model? Is that what this rumor is all about? Probably. That is the most annoying thing about the explosion of property licensing in the last couple of decades. Now companies, even the official authentic license holders, will put out fugly and cheap unis so that anyone can buy it and declare themselves "fans" because they have a jersey, even though it is far, FAR from what the Mets would ever wear, even in Batting Practice/Spring Training. Kong76 Oct 04 2008 01:21 PM I wore my orange batting practice jersey to Shea's last game because it is, well, obnoxious, and that's how I felt that morning. I have a pretty authentic pinstripe one, a pretty authentic road grey, a cheap black 'new york' road one, and the snow white which is also pretty authentic but doesn't have a patch for some reason (I bought it on ebay cheap). I've never gone to a game and thought, "ug they're wearing this or they're wearing that." I used to go to Shea and think I was going to see the first no- no until the first hit -- well we know how that went. I'm still not sure if my Mets obsession is going to fade into the sunset with each piece of concrete carted out of Queens the next couple of months, and if I'm going to be alienated by new uniforms and a stadium named after one of the four or five banking conglomerates likely to be standing next spring, but my guess is if they come out with some cool uniform that I like I'll pro- bably get one and if I get to Citifield next year I'll wear it and say, "Let's Go Mets" in it and not wish it was road grey or pinstripes. Time marches on, and backwards since it will be in a replica Ebbets Field -- I can't get outraged over what they'll be wearing and where they'll be playing. A Boy Named Seo Oct 04 2008 03:12 PM I have some Mets jerseys (how come it's not jersies?) and except for this mid 80's Rawlings pull-over that I got back then, they're all cheapie replicas. I like having options on crap to buy because I'm 33 and find there to be few occasions a dude like me wears sports jerseys out anymore when I'm not at a game, and nowadays that's not an automatic anyway (I once owned a sweet, blue Clippers alternate road jersey I never wore out of the house once). Plus the cost of the official ones are downright offensive. $170 for a shirt is not something I will take part in. Cheap shirts = More money for $12 stadium beer. Kong76 Oct 04 2008 04:35 PM I don't really wear them out except for games and an occasional bbq at a friend's house. I guess that makes them all the more expensive and use- less but I like them. metsmarathon Oct 04 2008 10:35 PM ="A Boy Named Seo"]I have some Mets jerseys (how come it's not jersies?) for the same reason its not donkies... ] Main Entry: donkey Pronunciation: \ˈdŋ-kē, ˈdəŋ-, ˈdȯŋ-\ Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural donkeys Etymology: origin unknown Date: circa 1785 1 : the domestic ass (Equus asinus) 2 : a stupid or obstinate person metsguyinmichigan Oct 05 2008 10:44 AM Because there is an "e" before the "y." Vince Coleman Firecracker Oct 08 2008 07:28 AM The only jersey I currently wear is a black home replica Reyes jersey. The black home jersey is my least favorite of all the versions the Mes currently wear, but my fiancee bought it for me, so I'm kinda stuck with it. The current grey road jersey is my favorite; sorry to hear the OE "NEW YORK" is on the way out. Not very sorry to hear the black will be reigned in. Benjamin Grimm Oct 08 2008 07:32 AM If the black is replaced with a very dark grey, then it's not going to make much of a difference. I do find the black less objectionable on the road uniforms than on the home. If the road gets dark grey instead of black, and the home uniform ditches the black, I'll be quite happy. John Cougar Lunchbucket Oct 08 2008 07:34 AM I've been informed by a reliable source that the denial of that story is credible and that the very same ugly-ass unis will be back for next year, unfortunately. Benjamin Grimm Oct 08 2008 07:35 AM Oh well. If that's true, then at least the uniforms won't be getting uglier, which was always a possibility. AG/DC Oct 08 2008 07:58 AM I'll agree. Mets and number on pinstriped home unis, 1930s Giants-style New York on the roads (I could whine about how it's another example of Fred Wilpon disregarding the Giants tradition). That's it. Here's a suggestion about what to bring to Citi Field, from gothamist.com: ]Cat Lovers Want Shea Stadium Feral Cats Moved to Citi Field Since opening in '64, Shea Stadium has been a popular home for feral cats, who've been known to scamper onto the field during games. In the Mets' championship year of 1969, a black cat ran back and forth in front of the Cubs dugout, cursing Chicago's pennant hopes. Now a group called Neighborhood Cats is urging the Mets to relocate the feral felines to the new Citi Field. "They're part of Mets lore, so why not keep them around?," asks Bryan Kortis, the group's leader. He guesses there are 20-40 cats who call the stadium home, and if the Mets don't relocate them he predicts, "they're going to be overrun with rats." Pressure from other groups successfully saved the Home Run Apple, but Mets officials have yet to respond to this demand. And a Parks Department spokeswoman tells Newsday there are only a couple cats at Shea, and when they catch them, they're taken to a shelter.
