  1. I'm not so sure I'd leap to that conclusion.
  2. Last year's free agents, as selected by metsmarathon: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7745&start=0
  3. There may be one or two big free agents each year, but there's no guarantee that they'll play the position your team most needs to fill.
  4. I think if the Mets hadn't traded Kazmir for Zambrano they would have traded him for someone else. So if it gives you any comfort, you can look at this not as a difference between Kazmir and Zambrano, but as the difference between Zambrano and the 'someone else.' The trade doesn't bother me any more. It never really did, actually. I didn't like it when it was made. I hoped it would turn out good nevertheless, but it didn't. But I can't get worked up over such things. The frustrating thing is, as someone mentioned above, that everyone knew it was a bad deal at the time except the Mets execs who pulled the trigger. It's hard to think of many trades so outlandishly foolish. The only one I can think of off the top of my head that beats this one is Keith Hernandez for Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey.
  5. Before this day is out, Bob G. Miller will have received more clicks today than he did in the last nine and a half years. (At the moment, he's received 41.5% of his total clicks today.)
  6. The Mets should just keep it and give it to Endy next season in lieu of pay.
  7. That's what could make this tricky. If Carp and/or Evans are legit, then the Mets can save that Texieria money, have Delgado keep the spot warm in 2009 and then give way to one of the young guys in 2010. But if neither of them works out, then the Mets have passed on a chance to lock up the position for a number of years with a proven player like Texieria. The odds are probably very much against either Evans or Carp producing like Texieria, especially in 2010. The way I would play this is I'd renew Delgado, and then see if signing Texieria is possible. If he's signed, then you deal Delgado. If not, then you at least have a guy in place for 2009, and 2010 (and beyond) can be addressed later.

  9. I bought one of them for $75!
  10. These numbers are astounding. I know I'm probably the only one who cares about this stuff, but what the heck. Bob G. Miller is getting the greater benefit of these links, because he's listed first. But he's already in fifth place in single-day volume, and Bob L. Miller is in ninth place. There are many hours to go yet, so I'll keep peeking to see how much they both rise on the list. 12/27/2005 Jeff Reardon 10/11/2006 Cory Lidle 6/19/2007 David Cone 7/30/2004 Kevin Mitchell 10/17/2008 Bob G. 11. He didn't link to the UMDB for Bobby Jones. Instead he used soxprospects.com and rnding3rd.com.
  12. Huge numbers today for the Bob Millers. When I checked the stats a few minutes ago, I thought that someone named Bob Miller must have flown his plane into a jewelry store and beheaded a cat. We're talking that kind of huge. Turns out, the Bobs have Paul Lukas to thank: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/081017&sportCat=nfl
  13. I don't know if I saw "Nightmare" or not. I remember my friends all liked those kinds of movies, so I went along to a few of them, but those Jason/Freddy etc. movies are all a blur to me now, and probably were then. All I know is I didn't think much of the Blues Brothers at the time, and when I watched it again years later, I didn't feel any differently. So I'm disqualifying myself from this poll.
  14. I don't even remember Heathers. The title doesn't even sound familiar to me. Was it some kind of a chick flick? Why don't I remember the Eighties? I wasn't drinking or doing drugs. Maybe I was watching too much baseball. I do remember doing that!
  15. Me too! I thought it was about a kid getting jailed in Turkey for smuggling drugs. I forgot all about the DeNiro-Grodin buddy movie. I really liked it and it doesn't deserve to have been forgotten.
  16. So what were they thinking? I guess they thought that Kazmir was overvalued as a prospect and not much of a sure thing, and that they'd get better quality results sooner from Zambrano. The other question about that deal (and the one for Benson) is why were the Mets loading up for a pennant race at that point in 2004 when they really weren't in it at all?
  17. It worked! I retroactively made this poll expire after one day, and after I did that I was no longer able to cast a vote. I now see the results as if I had voted, even though I didn't. I'll do the same with the other closed polls, just so no additional votes trickle in.
  18. Kirk Cameron? Isn't he that kid from Growing Pains who's now making Jesus movies?
  19. You could open each poll with a 2-day expiration. I did that with the Presidential polling thread, but I'm not aware of whether it worked or not! (If there's anyone who didn't vote in that thread, please check it out and see if it's open or closed to voting.) As for this thread, I didn't vote. I didn't think much of Empire and never saw Weird Science.
  20. Yeah, another reason I'm glad I didn't watch. Since I'd be rooting for the Rays, it's just as well that I didn't see that debacle.
  21. I'm not interested in watching, and I guess I missed a good game. No regrets, though. I'm enjoying NOT watching baseball.
  22. I'm guessing there was something buried under the mound that they wanted to retrieve. I don't have a great guess as to what it was. My best guess is some kind of camera, but I don't recall seeing any mounds-eye views on any telecasts.
  23. Vic Sage wrote: Trade Delgado for a decent #3-#4 SPer; dump all other expendable salaries for nothing (Castillo, Anderson, Castillo, etc), play Murphy at 2b, and sign Texiera, Dunn and Fuentes. That sounds like a decent plan. (Not the only option, of course, but a pretty good one.) Only problem is it would leave the Mets still needing one more starter, (remember, they have to replace Pedro and they have to either replace or re-sign Perez) unless you think Niese is ready to step up.
  24. I also voted for the werewolf.
