  1. Ron Darling, Hernandezs fellow commentator and ex-teammate on the Mets, will have the night off on Wednesday. But in a bit of intrigue, Darling said he was asked to appear on that Seinfeld episode before Hernandez but turned down the part because he did not want to upset his then-wife, who was struggling to land acting jobs. I remember Toni Darling. She kinda struck me as a bit of a diva.
  2. Voting for Wednesday night's win in Cleveland will close over the weekend, perhaps as early as Saturday morning. If you haven't voted yet, and intend to, please cast your vote sometime today. Schaefer POTG 6/16/10 - Mets 8, Indians 4

  5. Thanks for the explanation. I thought maybe you had taken some of Steve Rogers' medication.
  6. In one of his recent starts, I was watching the opposing team telecast on Extra Innings, and they showed a slow-motion replay of one of his pitches; the camera followed the ball on its way to the plate. You were able to really see that the stitches on the ball weren't rotating. The ball wobbled a bit, a little back-and-forth sway, but none of that spin that you'd normally see. I know that that's how a knuckler behaves, but I don't think I had ever seen one so clearly. It was uncanny. It's hard to believe that a ball could be thrown 60+ feet without any spin at all.
  7. Who exits the staff if Maine gets activated, as expected, in the next week or so? Assuming no injuries in the interim, I'm guessing it will be Igarashi, Valdes, or Mejia.
  8. The heavy guy is Jeff Juden. The UMDB has him at 265 pounds. Some other sources have him at the same weight, including Baseball Almanac and the Baseball Cube, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN. Others, such as retrosheet and Baseball Reference, have him at 245. One site, something called Pro Player Connect, has him at 290.

  10. TheOldMole wrote: Bobby Shantz? DING! DING! DING! Bobby Shantz, at 5'6", 142 is the shortest and lightest pitcher to beat the Mets. For tallest we have Jon Rauch. Still missing the heaviest, so here's a hint: He was a Milwaukee Brewer when he beat the Mets and it was in the late 1990's. He also pitched against the Mets as a Phillie, a Giant, and an Expo, and was also an Astro, an Indian, an Angel, and suffered the indignity of ending his career as a Yankee.
  11. Yes! David Cone in 1992, and Oliver Perez in 2008.
  12. Nope, not Leiter. The 1990's guy is better remembered as a 1980's guy. The 2000's guy is still very fresh in our memories.
  13. Keith it is. He led the NL in 1986 with 94 walks. Still need two pitchers, in addition to Torrez and Darling. One was in the 1990's, and the other in the 2000's.
  14. Olerud would probably have been my guess, if I didn't already know the answer. But no, it's not him.
  15. MFS62 wrote: Huh? Roy Face was listed as 5'8", 155. The only pitcher I ever remember being listed as shorter was Freddie Norman (5'7") and I'm not sure if he ever faced the Mets. Later Yeah, well, I got a guy who's 5'6", 142. And I just checked Baseball Reference, and they have him as even lighter!
  16. I saw DUMB out of the corner of my eye and realized that it's an anagram for UMDB. I should try to leverage that somehow.
  17. Not Piazza. Not Harrelson.
  18. Yup. Torrez in 1983 with 113 and Darling two years later with 114.
  19. Nope, none of the above answers are correct. (Nobody's guessing the old guy; it was Hoyt Wilhelm, 8/15/1970, 48 years, 20 days.) The second-heaviest guy, at 260, is Sean West. Still looking for tallest, heaviest, and lightest/shortest. Also, we know that Larry Dierker beat the Mets as a teenager (four times!) but seven others also did. EDIT: Gwreck snuck in there with the correct answer for tallest: Jon Rauch at 6'11".
  20. Inspired by the Oliver Perez thread: Who are the four Mets pitchers who have led the National League in walks? (Each of the four did it once.) On the flip side, one Mets hitter led the league in walks, and he also did it only once. Who was he?
  21. Maybe that's why he didn't want to go to the minors. He wanted to keep himself in the race for the NL lead in walks. (Does he get some kind of incentive bonus if he wins the walk title?)
  22. Also, feel free to guess who the eight teenagers were who beat the Mets. One beat them five times, one four, one three, and the other five once each. (A lot of numbers in that sentence.)
  23. Some broad hints: The heavy guy beat the Mets in the 1990's, and only beat them once. I have his weight at 265. There's a pitcher who beat them twice in 2009 who comes close, with 260. The tiny guy also had only one win against the Mets, and it was way back in the 1960's. And the tall guy (6'11") has two wins against the Mets, both within the last six years.
