And while they deny it was over contract specifics, it needs to be remembered that Dusty wan't their first choice when they were looking around for a replacement for Matt Williams. They had targeted Bud Black (now with Colorado) but that fell apart over ... contract specifics and so they moved on to Baker. GM Mike Rizzo (or the folks he reports to) apparently have ideas of what a manager is worth and they don't want to go over that. As a long-time vet going for his second deal with this team, maybe Dusty wanted a raise they weren't willing to give. Also his star RF'er notably went all non-committal when asked about Baker in the aftermath of their elimination ("that's not my decision").btw, none of the Washington coaches are being kept either -- although it's possible they could re-hire some of them once they decide on a new skipper. So this makes highly respected and long time pitching coach Mike Maddux at least theoretically available. Know any teams looking for a replacement PC?

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Best wishes to him.I imagine if the Mets went hard after him, he'd have considered it. It's a tough assignment, trying to perform your second act in the same division where you had your long-term first job.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2017 Author Posted October 22, 2017 I would have been very Gardy leery.I can't remember specifics now, but I recall questioning a bunch of his moves during the annual ritual sacrifice to pinstripes the Twins would pull each year. Also, the Twins have a not so great track record getting nothing out of players who go on to be good or even great elsewhere. I mean, sure, everyone does that, but they seem to do it because they tryto mold their guys into old-school type opposite field singles hitters. They did that with Papi Ortiz for crissakes before flat-out releasing him at age 26 coming off a 826 OPS season. They wanted CarlosGomez to slap the ball on the ground too during the one year they had him and he wound up blossoming right after those restraints came off. Recently they gave up on 1st round draft pick Aaron Hicks(traded for a .140-hitting backup catcher) who by the end of the year was the starting CF for the Yanquis. And, again, all orgs miss players here and there. It's just that Minnesota seems to do so specifically by trying to put round pegs in square holes and then blaming the pegs when it doesn't work. Now maybe that's more organizational than it is on Garderhire specifically, but he was an organization man for a long time, something they talked about as being consistent throughout the whole TomKelly/Garderhire time frames, so I wonder how set in his ways he is, especially as he talked in his Detroit press conference about needing to be introduced to the analytics department.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2017 Author Posted October 27, 2017 The Yanquis tend to stay in house for a lot of their stuff. When they needed to replace Torre they interviewed only Girardi (former player who was part of their broadcast booth at the time), along with Mattingly, and Tony Pena who was an active coach for them at the time. Most of the names I've heard thrown around today involve guys in their system -- coach Rob Thomson, various minor league mgrs -- along with former (actually still current coach technically) NYM batting coach Kevin Long who of course came from the Yanx.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2017 Author Posted October 29, 2017 After hiring Matt Williams because he reportedly didn't want a recycled manager, Nationals GM turned to veteran Dusty Baker only to back out of that after just two years even though they produced94 & 97 win seasons. Well now that team has turned back to another first-time in Dave Martinez. They had reportedly also interviewed hitting coach Kevin Long and recently canned Red Sox skipper John FarrellBorn in NYC, raised in Florida, Martinez was a long-time player [16 seasons from '86 - '01 with the Cubs, Expos, Reds, Giants, ChiSox, Rays, Cubs again, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Braves] and since hasbeen the bench coach with Joe Maddon on both the Rays & Cubs and a frequent managerial interviewer. Kapler played center field. He represented Ty Cobb, who never wore a number.
