Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 (edited) This could very well get stale quickly, but anyone who wants to take the occasional BB-Ref mugshot quiz feel free to publicize your results here. They change the lineup several times per day so if someone (like me here) gives away the answers you only need to check back a couple hours later to get a fresh set of thumbnail photos.Hit on four out of 12 - probably my most common percentage.Scored on '80s stars Mike Greenwell, Eric Davis, and Ruben Sierra, plus had a gimme with Andrew McCutcheonWhiffed on a very young and considerably less hairy Dodgers-era Jayson Werth, the Tampa version of Heath Bell (the photo doesn't show his massive things) and on all six b&w era dudes several of whom look like they played in the 1700s. Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 I didn't get any of that batch. I should have gotten Eric Davis, and might have gotten McCutchen if not for his short hair in the photo.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Of the current batch, I only got one, the former Met in the White Sox cap. I only had one other guess, the Houston Astro, and I was wrong. Thought it was Dickie Thon, but it was one of his teammates.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Five Yankee hats in 12 thumbnails up there now. How am I supposed to name anybody?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 Hit on the first four in a row -- Ron Santo, Jonathan Papelbon, Justiin Verlander, Joe Torre (MFY version) -- and then promptly struck out on the next eight, all b&w guys only some of which were names I even knew.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 I was just able to get Torre this time. Those black-and-white photos are often tough, although sometimes it's someone with a very familiar face, like Ruth or Cobb or Walter Johnson.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 Took a rare complete whiff this morning, missing on, among others, ex-NYM Chris Young (the tall white version - in a Texas hat).Only one other player was active and that was Jonathan Broxton which, like my miss of Heath Bell yesterday, was complicated by the fact that the thumbnail photo doesn't show his massive thighs.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 I got two of the current batch. One being a gimme.Who knew that (un-named Twin) looked like such a scuzzbag when he was young.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 I easily recognized Ron Darling, of course, but I also got the Baltimore Oriole. I just looked at him and said, "Oh, that's Al Bumbry!" I don't know how the hell I knew that. If I had to list 500 Baltimore Orioles, I don't think I would have ever thought of Al Bumbry. I remember nothing about Al Bumbry. But somehow I recognized his face at a glance.

I don't think I've known a single black & white picture yet.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Chicken Wolf?Any relation to Sea?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Or perhaps, Chicken of the Sea Wolf.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Somehow, I didn't recognize "Egyptian Healy".

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Fran's Egyptian grandpa!

I suspect that may be the source of his nickname. He died in 1899 age the age of just 32. He's probably not buried under one of the pyramids although you never know. This is Francis Xavier Paul Healy who played parts of four season in the 1930s. He's the uncle of Francis Xavier Healy, both of Holyoke, Mass. I wonder if he talked incessantly too.[fimg=100]https://d3k2oh6evki4b7.cloudfront.net/req/201707131/images/headshots/7/75b12e6c_davis.jpg[/fimg]

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 Eight just now! (Missed the four oldest ones.)
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 Oooh, I just got a rare eight also. One was a b&w guy but that was Jackie Robinson
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 One of the things about the b&w photos is that, while you may not know the guys, you do get treated to some great names.Recent scans have turned up Bugs Raymond, Chicken Wolf, Nig Cuppy, and Ginger Beaumont
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Man, Ginger Beaumont broke my heart in Make Way For Tomorrow.
